Source: A report on trade site Next-Gen citing an unnamed source.

What we heard: Eidos parent company SCi Entertainment has been the subject of numerous rumors ever since the publisher announced in September that it was in "extremely preliminary" talks with a potential acquirer. The Guardian was quick to report that the potential purchaser of SCi was Ubisoft, a charge the publisher denied.

That was followed by a report from The Times that said media conglomerate Time Warner and an unnamed Chinese company were also interested in the Tomb Raider and Hitman publisher. That article even suggested that Electronic Arts could be interested in the London-based SCi,since EA had previously pledged to invest in the British gaming industry.

Next-Gen cites a source with "a major game publisher" as saying SCi and Midway are "evaluating the possibility of a merger" and states that the two parties had actually entered preliminary merger talks once before in 2003, two years before SCi acquired Eidos. The exceedingly vague attribution on the source is likely just to further conceal which end of the supposed deal this information is coming from, but it leaves open the possibility that it isn't an SCi or Midway employee at all. On top of that, if the source's claim is accurate, the two sides are merely sizing up the idea, not exactly etching a deal in stone.

The Next-Gen report refers repeatedly to the supposed deal as a merger rather than a buyout, which would make sense, as both Midway and SCi have faced financial difficulties of late and neither seems in a position to buy out competition. SCi stock has been trending downward since last June and has lost more than half of its value in the past three months. Likewise, Midway has faced difficulties with delays and disappointing revenues, resulting in a loss of half of its share value in the past four months.

Either company could be an attractive target at this point if other publishers feel the market has actually undervalued their shares, but any merger or acquisition could be complicated by a web of interests at the shareholder level. Midway's controlling stockholder is Sumner Redstone, executive chairman and founder of media conglomerate Viacom. Redstone's daughter, Shari, is the chair of Midway's board of directors and serves as vice-chair on the Viacom board.

Viacom is a direct competitor of Time Warner, which, in addition to being a possible SCi suitor, already owns a 10 percent stake of the publisher. Both Viacom and Time Warner operate television networks and movie studios, and both have gaming divisions flush with cash. Viacom is pouring $500 million into MTV Games in the coming years, while Time Warner's Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment unit received the same amount of investment for development and acquisitions (like last November's $100 million pickup of Lego Star Wars developer Traveller's Tales).

While Midway and SCi are not in the best fiscal shape, the gaming groups of both Time Warner and Viacom are doing quite well and would seem in a better position to swoop in and pick up either one of the publishers. Both Time Warner and Viacom are establishing footholds in the market, and Midway and SCi both offer an array of brands and experience relevant to the traditional gaming market.

The official story: "Midway does not comment on rumors."--A Midway representative.
"I'm afraid we can't comment on rumours."--An Eidos representative.

Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus that a merger could happen in the wake of the big Activision-Vivendi deal. Bogus that it's any more a done deal than previous SCi-Eidos acquisition rumors.

    Why oh Why Please no...

I actually like Midway. I like the MK games (from the SNES - N64 era more than now), NBA Hangtime, Blitz etc...

Its Eidos I cant stand. I cant remember ONE Game that I've EVER liked from Eidos. And yes I've played Tomb Raider, I hate it. The movies are actually 10 times better than the games, and thats not saying much.
And their botched ads for Kane and Lynch? No, Midway. No.

so, can two negatives make a positive. (both companies are a far cry from what they once were, neither has had a strong mega hit in years, both have a proven history of destroying and running profitable franchises into the ground)

Not good after the Gerstmann incident for popular Midway to merge with bogus Eidos, but then maybe Midway can show Eidos the right way to make a game.

Gotta admit it's getting kinda out of hand with mergers. I love Hitman and the Legacy Of Kain series, and I do have fond memories of Tomb Raider games, even though I haven't played the last two installments (which seemed great, but didn't qualify as "must play" on my list... So I still enjoy stuff released by Eidos, but Midway ??? I never ever bought or rent any of the game they released ... which is a bad thing.

My point is, I love some of the small developpers working for the big Publishers (Crystal Dynamics and IO interactive basically), although I realise they hardly ever make Triple A system sellers.

I'm not necessarily against a merger if it means more money to develop next-gen LOK , Hitman and Tomb Raider titles... but I have a feeling it's just a way to raise their respective stock value in hopes of being purchased by EAgames or something...

Both of these companies sucked long before the Kane & Lynch debacle. How do they even make money on their less-than-mediocre games? It's inevitable that they will suck even harder once they merge, therefore making even less money. Goodbye and good riddance...

Bigger companies... bigger operating costs... smaller revenues. The hopeful equation is that 2 companies will make twice or thrice the amount of hits and hence increase revenues... hopefull it is not the same as with pharmaceuticals in which bigger is only more expensive.... These companies need to have more money because next gen gaming is MORE expensive... on the other hand, they need to get more efficient... more hits, less crap. The hit miss ration has to be larger... Only the old platforms and the Wii have the luxury to make crappy cheap games and get away with it.

If these companies continue to merge into larger conglomerations it is we, as gamers, that are going to lose. Larger companies are less likely too take the risks necessary to bring us new genre progressing tittles, more likely to ignore the wishes of their creative minds, and more likely to churn out the safe game (usually a FPS these days).

Am I being a tad cynical? You bet. But I fail to see how continued mergers can be good for us gamers in the long term.

I don't care about this merger as long as Midway release a new Blitz the League and Mortal Kombat sometime this decade, and quit ****ing out budget titles like that horrid WWII game.

I don't know why Midway get so much hate. They've made a lot of great games... a lot of crap, too, but imo, the good games make up for it.

Too many companies are combining. We are losing tons of companies and originality is decreasing. Midway will be allowed to tell them to do what they want in the games they make. Eidos might be screwed over with there current games. Like do we really want to see Legends 2 cancelled cause of thsi merger.

I don't know why everybody says this merging thing is actually bad....and why they say midway and eidos suck cuz they dont....didn't we all play mortal kombat, Commandos, Tomb Raider, Soul Reaver, Blood Omen, hitman, reservoir dogs, project snowblind, the suffering, WLS 99, Freedom fighters, gangsters, deus ex, wrestlemania, backyard wrestling, and lots of other great games that these companies made over years and always have fun?...wasn't hitman a big hit? how bout mortal combat or deus ex? come on these companies are great even tough they aren't THE best in the field right now. They were once on the top 5 and it wasn't long ago. And their new games aren't THAT bad either. I had fun with stranglehold and kane & lynch, even tough none are top-notch. I think these guys mergin together is a good thing if it happens. and i look forward to more of this cuz people aren't like piles of garbage. they have brains and even dumb brains, when put together, can point to something positive. And it will be really cool if they bring back some legendary franchises like legacy of kain and work on new IPs as well. Nearly every franchise they make can be improved in millions of ways.
    Go EidWay

Whoever is latching on to who this is going to degrade and erode Eidos which has been an awesome publisher. Say hello to nothing but crap games that can go on every platform.
