Duke Nukem Forever resurfaces

[UPDATE] 3D Realms releases screen of the decade-in-development shooter, new teaser trailer now available.
By Tor Thorsen, GameSpot
Posted Dec 18, 2007 6:00 pm PT

Over the weekend in Garland, Texas, developer 3D Realms had its Christmas Party. According to the developer community manager Joe Siegler, the celebrations were like many previous events, full of mirth and merriment and (presumably) freely flowing beverages.

However, there was one major difference between this year's 3D Realms bash and those previous. Apparently the evening revelry was capped by a brief teaser for the studios' infamously delayed first-person shooter, Duke Nukem Forever.

"Several people had been secretly working late nights and into the wee hours of the morning preparing a special video for those at the party," said Siegler in a post on the official 3D Realms Web site. "We'd like to thank the people on the team that worked so hard to create this teaser and the friends of 3DR that helped create it (Jeremy Soule and Julian Soule, Frank Bry, Jason Evigan and of course, Jon St. John)."

Hey look, it's the Duke!

Why does a closed-door viewing of a title widely regarded as vaporware matter to a gaming public now allowed inside? It matters because around noon CST tomorrow, 3D Realms will be opening its virtual doors to the world to show off the Duke Nukem Forever teaser. The preview will be the first publicly screened DNF video since the 2001 Electronic Entertainment Expo and the first footage of the latest version of the oft-reworked game.

"After seeing the teaser we thought it was something we should share with all of you and while it's just a teaser, rest assured more is coming," said Siegler before thanking DNF fans for their "continued patience." 3D Realms also released a new screenshot (above) from the latest version of the game, which shows its bare-armed, cigar-chomping hero.

Nice cutscene footage... Now where's the gameplay footage???

...That's exactly what I thought

Whether or not DNF is actually released, all this "Negative Publicity" is going to do some serious damge (if not kill it).

Duke Nukem was one of my favorite games wayyyyy back in the day until they stop making another series for a while.... so far, this is the newest Duke Nukem game thats coming out. I just have this question, are the Graphics seriously gunna stay like this, or its jus Beta? Duke Nukem 3D made outstanding commotion back in the day, thats why im asking are these the default graphics? O_O

Why isn't Duke Nukem 3D a downloadable game from Xbox 360 marketplace yet?

Okay...i have watched the trailer a few extra times now and i guess it's quite good even though i was not impressed the first time i saw it... But i have to say that i have gotten interested in this game now. I think and hoping that it will be a great game when it's realised. I also wish that they will make a PS3/Xbox 360 version of this game as well. But i could always buy the game for my PC if the decide not to make the game for other platforms.

Awesome. DN3D is still one of the most awesome shooters (save for graphics it's still ahead in alot of areas (level interactivity anyone?)).

I don't know why everyone is saying the trailer was crappy I thought it was awesome and captured the full feel of Duke Nukem. It was a great trailer to get some hopes up for the people who have been waiting "forever", and it showed what it might start to look like when the game is finished, which IMO it didn't look to bad. Yeah the graphics were a little sub-par, but they stil looked as if they would out do most other games. The characters looked like they were well animated and the backrounds, even though they were quick shots, looked decent. Overall this game could come together very well and be a nice addition to shooter fans libraries.

Answering your questions. Duke Nukem Forever is called that because when they originally announced the game they said it would take "forever" to be released and would do so "when it's done". Do I believe they anticipated the wait to be THIS long? Even with the literal definition of "forever" and their use of the word I don't believe they did. Business issues and overall dislike of the state of the game caused the delays, they are not just screwing with you. With that said, this will NOT be a perfect 10 game after all this time. Will it be good? I doubt with their mentality of "when it's done" that they could seriously mess it up, but don't expect the game will be the best FPS ever released either. Also, for those of you complaining about the main character, he is supposed to be over the top and rather ridiculous, this isn't the Master Chief or that dumb guy from Resistance. This is Duke Nukem. Of course he's drinking beer, smoking, and lifting weights; because that's what he is all about. This shouldn't be the top game on your radar, because you'll be waiting for a while, but one large fact still holds true. People will buy this game because it is the legendary "Duke Nukem Forever". Whether it's good or bad, people are going to eat it up, I'm just hoping for the former.

Okay, everyone, all of you just shut up now. For all you know they likely had a good reason for taking so long, for one thing people in the new millenium might not even give two craps about Duke Nukem, especially when we've got games that don't deserve player spotlights like Grand Theft Auto and The Elder Scrolls series.

I'm happy about this new trailer, and I'm grateful there's still some Duke Nukem fans out there. And all of you people dissing these guys should be ashamed. You think you can do better? Then get up off your ass and go work on the game yourself. Yeah that's what I thought.

It's just a teaser, it's no big deal, it's not like it was meant to be something huge. So sit down, shut up-- actualyl better yet, go outsdie and get soem fresh auir, I think you all need it.

End of rant.

So they graced us with a teaser that some bored team members cooked up for the soul purpose to show off at a party. Honestly they should have kept this to themselves, 7 years of nothing then this, for that reason - **** off please.

I hate seeing people getting hyped over this game and then being dissapointed in the long run becuase its another year or 2 before they say 3 words and dissapear again.

They'll either release this game this year or early 09 or never, face it people, It's ageing every day and WILL become dated before it even sees daylight and they will have no choice but to scrap it and redo it on another engine as they have done.
And if so please just DIE! Dont come back every half decade with NOTHING but your "when its done" attitude that has got you this far; nowhere. I wonder if it supports SLi and utilizes duel core cpus... or are they still working with single core technology lmfao ahhh.

I really don't care for Duke Nukem. I found the games to be over-rated and I thought the main character was okay, but his whole "Bad Boy wearing glasses and cigar" gimmick is WAAAY over-used by better characters, but I might check this game out, because I mean, you kill aliens with a brain-less jock with big guns.

This game was never really cool, it didn't ever have that great of a plot, and most of his most famous lines like "Hail to the king baby!" were taken from else where.

That was a horrible trailer, but that doesn't mean I'm going to write off this game. The original Duke Nukem was a great game.

No offense to all of the fanatics, but I never really liked Duke Nukem. If this trailer is any indication, I hope this game just gets cancelled, and I hope 3D Realms tries to break into a different franchise. I don't care what it is. It could be spyro or crash bandicoot for all I care (because I really want to see a good game from both franchises.)

Wow that was really... crappy. So he's drinking beer, smoking, and weight training, in full combat attire. So it took a decade to make a trailer with crappy graphics and a crappier voice-over. Nice.

Pulse pounding rock music, check. Big muscular guy covered in bullets wearing a tank top, check. Buzz cut, check. Overly big, suggestive cigar, check.

They didn't even attempt to get creative with the title, "Forever" is cheesier than "The Revenge Of Duke Nukem". This will be Lair all over again, as gamespot said, "A beautiful disaster"

I think it's all part of a cunning plot so that all the kids who were 10 years old when they played the original can now legally buy the (obviously) 18 rated new game.

Yeah.

Think about it.

Cunning.

LOL the "new" screenshot just looks like a screen from the trailer pretty much...not actual footage of the game itself...if anything a cutscene.

What a terrible trailer. If you are saying graphics shouldn't matter, then look at how many years it's been in development. I mean, sure they had to retool the whole engine to meet standards, but that looks like Doom 3 quality graphics -- certainly not the revolutionary graphics brought to the table by the likes of Half Life 2, F.E.A.R., or Crysis.

the way it started...it should be called DUke Nukem : Fornever.....and the lousy excuse "when it`s done"..i mean...c`mon....give us at least something, not that piece of cr4p teaser...some screen shots, 1 minute playable demo, nens updates, anything... i think that the gamers worldwide deserve to know that you are developing this game and not just making some CGI teasers...it`s just not fair, not right...what`s gotten into you 3DRealms? EA ? and if you ever release this game, try to remove all of the bugs, because after circa 15 years of beta testing they would be really unacceptable....

and if you dont release it...DROP DOWN, GIVE ME TWENTY AND DIE

It would be nice to get it rolling, really fantastic. I expect lots of action, simplicity and humor, fancy graphics & music are almost secondary for me. Ok, let's give it a chance, again - I resurect it on the wish list.
