PQRS spells out Boom Blox

GDC 2008 session names EALA and Steven Spielberg's block-building collaboration for the Wii.

During this year's E3 Media and Business Summit, Electronic Arts parted the curtain on its upcoming collaborations with famed film director Steven Spielberg. For the Wii, the two titans in their respective industries would be pooling their collective energies to create a building-block game.

Though it has been operating under the tentative title PQRS, rumors have arisen that the game will, somewhat aptly, include the word "blocks" in the title. Presumably confirming those suspicions, a synopsis of a game-design session at this year's Game Developers Conference gives the game's name as Boom Blox. The session will be given by EALA VP of creative development Louis Castle and will address the trials and tribulations of creating a block game with a "very small team in a relatively short period of time."

As described by EALA general manager and VP Neil Young, Boom Blox couples the simplicity of Jenga--presumably the board-game version--with the overwrought complexity of a Rube Goldberg machine. Playing heavy to the physics of stacking blocks, the game features more than 100 different parlor games that incorporate the Wii's motion-sensing remote. The game also includes single- and multiplayer modes for cooperative and competitive play, as well as a level editor.

Boom Blox is currently slated to arrive exclusively for the Wii before the end of March 2008. Scheduling for the Boom Blox session has not yet been finalized, but GDC 2008 is scheduled for February 18-22 in San Francisco.
