PQRS spells out Boom Blox

GDC 2008 session names EALA and Steven Spielberg's block-building collaboration for the Wii.

During this year's E3 Media and Business Summit, Electronic Arts parted the curtain on its upcoming collaborations with famed film director Steven Spielberg. For the Wii, the two titans in their respective industries would be pooling their collective energies to create a building-block game.

Though it has been operating under the tentative title PQRS, rumors have arisen that the game will, somewhat aptly, include the word "blocks" in the title. Presumably confirming those suspicions, a synopsis of a game-design session at this year's Game Developers Conference gives the game's name as Boom Blox. The session will be given by EALA VP of creative development Louis Castle and will address the trials and tribulations of creating a block game with a "very small team in a relatively short period of time."

As described by EALA general manager and VP Neil Young, Boom Blox couples the simplicity of Jenga--presumably the board-game version--with the overwrought complexity of a Rube Goldberg machine. Playing heavy to the physics of stacking blocks, the game features more than 100 different parlor games that incorporate the Wii's motion-sensing remote. The game also includes single- and multiplayer modes for cooperative and competitive play, as well as a level editor.

Boom Blox is currently slated to arrive exclusively for the Wii before the end of March 2008. Scheduling for the Boom Blox session has not yet been finalized, but GDC 2008 is scheduled for February 18-22 in San Francisco.

Some of you people really suprise me. I think it's pretty obvious that this could be a pretty sweet game. Seems to me you only insult it because it's a puzzle. It's a very legiimate genre and with Spielberg (creator of "Meadal of Honor" series amond other gaming related things) this is oght to be super special and cool.

It saddens me to think that the same man who created such cinematic masterpieces as Jurassic Park, Jaws, and E.T. (the games were s***, I'm talking about the movies) is helping EA to reinforce the stereotype that the Wii isn't good for hardcore gamers. We want shooters, RPGs and adventure games- not this fluff. (Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the only true Wii RPGs are on Virtual Console.) The day that LMNO gets ported to Wii will be the happiest day in the history of mankind.

Wow, you payed all that money to get Steven Spielberg to help you make a crappy motion sensing puzzle game for the Wii. EA = phail.

Hope this puts the Wii-mote's accuracy (and its users) to the test.

This could be pretty cool if it's done right. It will probably suck, but I'll wait for the review. Sticking on my tracked games so I don't forget about it.

It's nice to see collaborations like this.... But Boom Blox? Surely they could think of something better for the Wii?

It could be cool. But it probably won't. You can do better, Spielberg.

Sounds like it might be a pretty inventive, fun game. There supposed to be making a story based spy game with Steven Spielberg though(Steven Spielberg said it would make players cry) so don't worry about there not being an epic, story based Spielberg game as well as a simple fun one.

EA is finally making games for Nintendo Wii but, most of them seem to have the purpose of reinforcing the stereo type that the Wii-remote is only good for grade school party games. Give us some Action Adventure RPGs like Nintendo, Capcom, and Squar-Enix.

I wasn't expecting something like this either. I was expecting some great story based title. Maybe something based on a script or idea he never made. This could be interesting, but, hey, if you're on this site you're probably not a casual gamer, which is who this type of title is probably geared towards.

Did anyone else expect something more from a collaboration with Spielberg than a variation on a kid's building blocks game?

The idea seems Interesting but we will see if it does good.
