Blizzard confirms new MMOG

Community representative says recent job listings are for massively multiplayer online game unrelated to megahit World of Warcraft.
By Tom Magrino, GameSpot
Posted Dec 12, 2007 10:35 am PT

It's been assumed for quite some time that Blizzard Entertainment is working on a new massively multiplayer online game. In April, Blizzard indicated a "next-gen MMO" was in the works by way of job listings on its official Web site. Playing coy, however, the World of Warcraft developer simply noted that it had a number of unannounced projects under its awnings, but no official confirmation of a new title would be forthcoming.

At this year's Austin Game Developer's Conference, Blizzard CEO Michael Morhaime reiterated that fact, saying the studio was "starting to think about what we want to do next," but that Blizzard wouldn't be ready to open up about a new project "probably not for a long time."

That time is apparently drawing nearer--somewhat, at least. After a new batch of job requisitions were posted to Blizzard's Web site, WOW fans flocked to the game's message boards to salivate over the prospects of World of Guitar Hero--stemming from the developer's recent merger with megapublisher Activision. After a fan speculated that the openings were simply for Wrath of the Lich King--announced during this year's BlizzCon as the second expansion to WOW--a Blizzard community representative for the first time officially confirmed that Blizzard was working on a new MMOG.

"No, it is an unannounced next-gen MMO," said the rep. "And that doesn't mean an expansion for World of Warcraft either."

In addition to Wrath of the Lich King, Blizzard has announced it is working on Starcraft II, the first new full installment in its popular real-time strategy franchise in a decade.

Diablo 3 or World of Diablo/Diablo Universe. You're coming out with Star Craft 2 so now it's time for a new Diablo game.

Well, im hoping for at least a sci-fi mmo. Fantasy honestly is starting to bore my personally and im prob not the only person out there that wants something different.

I dont think it will be starcraft mmo, i wont mind - because it would be great to actually explore the universe, outposts, and so forth. Looking forward to it

It'd be interesting to see a World of Starcraft type of game. Looking at what history has shown us World of Warcraft wasn't far behind Warcraft 3. Perhaps World of Starcraft will follow Starcraft 2?

blizzard needs to stop being greedy... here's my prediction. they will come out with wotlk for wow and it will be awsome, however when this new mmo launches they will stop paying as much attention to wow and move to this one, thus stopping new material to wow and killing it for all 9 million players... any wow players like myself this is the beginning of the end. blizzard is getting bored making 15 X 9 million dollars a month...

Interesting, I would still eventually like to hear SOME plans of a Diablo 3 type game in the works (don't forget that in spite of the whole Hellgate: London/Flagship Studios dealings Blizzard still owns the rights to Diablo). As to what kind of game: I am betting it isn't a racing MMO, nothing WoWish (MMORPG), no hack and slash games like a Diablo MMO, and no RTS MMO. It will be exciting to find out what type of game this turns out to be (As the words MMO can be attached before many game suffixes.

Well that sucks, I really wish blizzard would just continue their 3 already great universes instead of trying something new.

As I have posted before : "In January, IGN reported that Blizzard (now part of the recently-formed Activision Blizzard) had plans for a new MMO and that it would not be based on WoW or anything too similar to the company's past projects."

They say they aren't going to make any TOO SIMILAR TO THE COMPANY'S PAST PROJECTS. So no starcraft and no Diablo, it's going to be a whole new story

i've personally retired the MMO genre unless Blizzard just makes such a game that totally revolutionizes the formula....but if it's going to be beat monsters for xp and loot and occasionally PVP with someone all over again then just isn't going to be worth it

I agree Doomsoth. As much as the MMO games seem cool, first of all I don't want to pay full price and a monthly fee for two different games just to continue to enjoy the Blizzard stories. Lame. I'll stick with Guild Wars and XBL for now.

"Next gen" is thrown around way too much, but I liek Blizzard alot, and hopefully they are using a whole new formula to make a MMO, WOW is fun and all but I want something new and fantasitic.

Whatever it is I am sure that my computer won't be able to run it lol, lame.

I would much rather see them do an original genre. I don't want to see a Diablo or Starcraft mmo, that's the old Blizzard. I want to see them design a world that is completely unique to prove that they still have imaginative minds in the building. If they do that, I might just fall back in line with Blizzard again.

I for one hope Diablo 3, when it eventually comes out, and it will, is NOT an MMO that you pay to play. Guild Wars is a game that comes to mind that is MMO but not pay per month. Eve Online already sucks alot out of my time, the shambles of my social life would disappear if Diablo 3 was an MMO pay per month style. I wouldn't be broke, but I'd have no life.

Having played Starcraft II at Blizzcon, I can say with full confidence that they are still doing what it does best, great.

Starcraft II; if you loved Starcraft, you will love it just as much. (Assuming you have the rig to run it nice I'd guess...)

I would like to see a WOW with updated graphics. Lord of the Rings Online with DX10 and all the fixings just looks amazing (I have it). So it would be nice to see a WOW game that's not so "dated".

Diablo MMO? I don't see it....unless it's solely for nextgen consoles. A Diablo MMO on computers would be too much like WoW - which is essentially a cross between Warcraft and Diablo.

Universe/Galaxy of Starcraft? A definite possibility, and a logical followup to Starcraft II.

WoW 2? Sooner or later we expect to see this, unless WoW uses the expansion pack process to truly ramp up the graphics.

Whatever game this turns out to be, if it's truly meant to be for nextgen consoles, I'm excited to see the visuals. Blizzard has, wisely, not made the mistake of putting cutting-edge visuals in it's games, going with good PC graphics, but making sure the mainstream market could play it. With a nextgen console game, there'd be no such restrictions.

WoW has been such a huge success I expect this could be a WoW equivelent for the next-gen consoles. That term "next-gen" and the nature of the ads on the jobs being about the core technology of 360/PC makes me think they maybe looking for something they can leverage across both platforms. If anyone can deliver a quality MMO to the next-gen consoles it is Blizzard. I'm hoping NOT WoW as I have been there and done that on PC. I do know I've been waiting a LONG TIME for Blizzard to push past what they have done with WoW. It is a great game but it's showing it's age and it's time for them to raise the bar again.
