Codemasters' EGO has landed

Proprietary middleware behind Colin McRae: DiRT is renamed; set to power upcoming Race Driver title, GRID.

The proprietary middleware game engine previously known as Neon is now to be referred to as EGO. The Codemasters engine is under the hood of Colin McRae: DiRT, and is also being used in the upcoming titles Race Driver: GRID and Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising.

The middleware is the base technology used in DiRT, drives the new damage and physics systems in GRID, and is used for the huge battlegrounds in Operation Flashpoint 2.

Bryan Marshall, chief technology officer at Codemasters Studios, commented, "Particularly for Operation Flashpoint 2, we simply could not fulfill the ambitions we have for the game with any off-the-shelf middleware; certainly not one that enabled us to develop across the major fifth generation consoles simultaneously with PC, rather than as an afterthought, and no one was doing that."

EGO has been three years in development at Codemasters. The company decided to rename the engine to better "befit its accomplishments and future potential."

Operation Flashpoint will tottally rock, and if its anything like the Original PC version (realism wise etc) it will make a lot of FPS devs very envious, as well as showing them how to make a trully great 'Modern Combat' shooter.

OFP2: RR & RACE DRIVER: GRID are on my most wanted List, As Makavelo mentioned "wide open areas that you can explore, not like many of the shooters today that got small open areas". & everything is interactive on the Battlefield, what you see or come across you use.

I never bothered with Armed Assault, as I still play OFP: GOTY still to this present day,

OFP2 : RR will be a BIG HIT!!!

OF2 looks pretty good so far. I'll be keeping an eye on it.

I like OF because of the wide open areas that you can explore, not like many of the shooters today that got small open areas.

Yeah CodeMasters rocks! They know how to make killer Raceing games thats for sure! I just hope there next PS3 game is a Motostorm2 not another Drit game. I mean that was a good looking game and all, but it had no real online play with other players ingame. They tryed to be more competitive then fun, and it failed big time.

I've always been a fan of codemasters and own the majority of there games. I rate Dirt highly although after hearing about codemasters recent law suits against individuals, including many minors, for downloading their games via file sharing sites, I have lost respect for them. I am against illegal downloads of games as it is clearly damaging the industry but threatening people with court action if they don't pay codemasters a fine ranging from £500-£5000 ($1000-$10000) is not the right way about stopping it in my opinion.

Bankrupting hundreds of familys a month before christmas is hardly going to give Codemasters a good public image.

Ok... Now use that supposed powerhouse of an engine to give us a next-gen Micro Machines. Now that would be cool.

Odd how many people link EGO to Dirt. I have to admit this is a great game. But what we seem to forget is the impact this will have of the successor of THE best war sim ever made, OFP. Though Armed Assault was a nice snack in between, Codemasters will definately amaze us by going a couple of steps further. For all you sim fans out here, keep an eye on OFP2 as the BF series and everything alike will turn pale when this jewel hits the stores

A new name on a great engine. DiRT looked great and the screens from GRID look even better. Eager to see videos from that game. Nice backgrounds and scenery too. If the damage system is as good ad DiRT then some then that's fantastic. Especially when it comes to multiplayer game types.

Cool, it should go into competition with Criterion's Burnout engine and Rockstar's RAGE. It'll be interesting.
