Eidos trademarks Tomb Raider Underworld

Publisher lays claim to seedy and/or subterranean sounding name for upcoming Lara Croft adventure.

Eidos Interactive's digital starlet Lara Croft is no stranger to caverns or criminals, and those familiar trappings may play a large part in her next adventure if a US trademark application is any indication. As reported by Trademork, earlier this month, Eidos filed an application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for a trademark on the phrase "Tomb Raider Underworld."

The trademark specifically notes that it covers games either on discs or digitally distributed. The most recent title in the series, Tomb Raider Anniversary, was released as a retail product on multiple platforms. And on the Xbox 360, it was also offered as a downloadable add-on to Tomb Raider: Legend.

Eidos has already confirmed that a new Tomb Raider game is in development, although it has yet to release any details about it. As of press time, a representative with the publisher had not returned GameSpot's request for comment.

So Gamespot how will this game score do you think? 9.0? Maybe even an 11?

Tomb Raider isn't a bad series, neither is Eidos. Don't like Tomb Raider then why are you all here in the first place? I enjoy the games, and if you want to give me negative marks just for that then you lot but have an anger management problem, sorry but you are all acting like children by giving people who like Tomb Raider negative marks.

If you do that, wouldn't YOUR company be losing money? Just because Jeff was fired it isn't worth cutting your living for.

Give me a freaken break. Eidos is becoming such a pain, and not because of this dumb firing thing. They need to stop making Tomb Raider games and start making Legacy of Kain games again. Stick with the superior series, not the tired old Lara Croft.

Just went to www.joystiq.com. Can we please get the video review of Kane and Lynch back? The 6.0 review is only 1 point under the critics 7.0. Firing Jeff wasn't worth the bad PR.

I'm going to leave an actual comment, people are going to stop using GS period if its users are goin to be like this from now on.

If they're going to make another Tomb Raider, I hope it goes back to the basics like with Anniversary. When they moved away from the format with Angel of Darkness... boy did that game suck for a Tomb Riader title lol!

Eidos sucks and so does Gamespot

On the Spot was bad enough without Rich Gallup. Now that Jeff is gone, that show is really gonna suffer. Alex N, Ryan Davis, Bryan Ekberg, Brad Shoemaker, and Homer are all cool, but Rich and Jeff's personalities were what made OTS so fun to watch, even when crappy games were being shown.

Very slick. Subtle. Subversive, even. Pay attention kids, the staff is restless.

As for you GS members, don't spin the Jeff thing on Eidos though, because a publisher which just unloaded a massive marketing campaign is going to be upset when they're told their product is garbage. The real problem is with GameSpot's management, which is now truly indistinguishable from Gamestop. The suits feel they need to do effective damage control and fire the peon. Oops, looks like you'll need some of those Crisis Management courses you took at the local community college and do it all over again.

Eidos has published some great titles: Deus Ex, Thief, Hitman.....
The distinction here is that they do not MAKE the games, just packaging, marketing, and distribution to retailers. They are the money people and that's what they do. It's also now what GameSpot does.

If y'all want to get back at Eidos...hit it where it hurts, their wallets. My cancellation of my subcription is only $40 down the drain for GS, but if a large number of people boycott Eidos products (as well as CNet), it can make a difference. I have already made the move to 1up, but till my subcription ends, I will help with the backlash towards Eidos and CNet.

the funny thing is they keep deducting points from the games like NFS ProStreet, and you know why? because these games have ads in them that gamespot cannot get its hands on! in one sentence i should say that the gamespot theory is that "games are not the place for advertisement, gamespot is!"

Many readers have asked about why we run ads on the site that often have very little to do with gaming. I am going to answer that now publicly, as it seems fitting when you consider the event that has taken place between Jeff Gerstmann and his former long time employer Gamespot.

In case readers didn’t notice Gamespot ran a bunch of Kane & Lynch advertisements, and with that, though they can deny it, comes a certain level of unwritten respect that is expected. Think about it, why does Consumer Reports not run ads? Why is it you never hear networks bad mouth their sponsors? Why do we here at Ripten run ads that rarely have anything to do with gaming?

The answer to the last question is two fold. First, it is because our site is fairly new, and we have yet to establish a relationship with that type of vendor, but secondly, and most importantly, the longer we have been doing this, the more it started to dawn on us that maybe we don’t want to run game related advertising on our site.

I am sure it will get at least a 9. They may as well post it now, that is if EIdos pays up. Don't sell yourself cheap, CNET. Make sure you are up front about how much it will cost to get the game rated AAA. I think you should just make a price sheet. I'll be at IGN and 1UP if anyone needs me.
