Eidos Montreal Deus Ex-ecuted

British publisher's Quebecois studio officially opens, will focus on third installment in classic sci-fi series.

In May, Canada's answer to MTV broke a major piece of gaming news. Speaking to cable network MuchMusic, Eidos France director general Patrick Melichor let slip that the British publisher was opening a new studio in game-industry hub Montreal. More tantalizingly, the revealed new shop would exclusively be focused on a third entry in the acclaimed Deus Ex series. The franchise was presumed dead following the shuttering of Ion Storm in 2005 and renaming of Deus Ex: Clan Wars.

Initially, Eidos reps would not comment on Melichor's faux pas, giving press inquiries the silent treatment. Today, though, the company proudly announced the official opening of Eidos Montreal in the heart of the titular Quebecois metropolis. The shop is slated to employ 100 staffers by the end of the year and expand to 350 by 2009.

For the moment Eidos Montreal sole project is--surprise!--Deus Ex 3. "Deus Ex is one of our finest franchises, often cited as one of the best PC games of all time," said Rob Murphy, Eidos' managing director of studios. "By developing this game at our new cutting-edge Montreal studio we have the opportunity to really push the boundaries of expectation for Deus Ex 3."

Unfortunately, expectation is about all gamers have for Deus Ex 3. Eidos has not yet revealed a release date or platforms for the game, though a rep for the publisher said both will be revealed at a later date.

That said, a brief flash teaser for Deus Ex--accompanied by a cryptic voice-over monologue on humanity realizing its future potential--can be seen on the official Eidos Montreal Web site. The site also has a bit of shadowy concept art for the game, which is equally mysterious when artificially lightened (pictured).

I wonder if the new character will be another denton....that'd be kinda cheesy...but if he isn't that would take away from it like playing raiden in MGS2....or SHE isn't o christ eidos please don't screw this up

Raiden was a much better character than Solid Snake was at the time (Snake may be a badass, but he had no personality before MGS4) and if the story were told from anyone's perspective but the "everyman", the tale would lose all of its weight.

Though I think it wasn't quite up to the level of DX1, DX2 was an excellent game. Viewed out of context, it is a complex, engrossing adventure/FPS hybrid with a great, branching story and high replay value.

If DX3 can pull off what made the first two uniquely great, I think we're looking at GOTY.

Alright! More FPS story telling at it's finest.

Do you guys know what made Deus Ex 1 so great? Let me tell you what I think made that game so great, is it's shear complexity. That game was so complex that it took me a while just to explore the menus and interface of the character. Then it comes down to the invinite amount of ways you could complete the missions. And the way you completed a mission gave you a feeling of importance because it was your own unique way. Thats what made Deus Ex one of the greatest of all time!!!

Amen with Data463, Invisible War was a total disappointment. I hope they take what made the original Deus Ex so great, and build on that. (Deeper customization of weapons and your character perhaps). I also hope for larger maps, and less(or at least shorter) load times.

Please, please, PLEASE I hope everyone on the development team plays Deus Ex 1 and completely absorbs what made it great. Deus Ex 2 was such a monumental disappointment and for me, it represented Deus Ex in name only. Sprawling levels, secrets so well hidden that it takes multiple play-throughs to find them all, and customization of the player character. These things were what made Deus Ex THE game of 1999. Invisible War should be held as how NOT to do a sequel. Treat the franchise right, Eidos. We're watching.

Yes, this is one of the biggest news i've heard in a while. As soon as they announce the release date i'm going to pre-order this one for sure. I mean i seriously play the original deus ex like once a year. the story is too good. I need an equivalent or better story for the third one or i'll be sending icarus to take out Eidos

DX1 was the first game I ever beat and the first game I ever loved. I am worried about DX3, however, because if it is anything short of ground-breaking I will not be satisfied.

Never played the first two Deus Ex games. I hear that the first one is on the PS2 and the second is on the Xbox. So I think I will check out the Xbox version and see if this game is worth it.

    I agree with -Dragon_Hunter-
Deus Ex 3 should return to what it originally was

Hopefully this one will go back to it's roots, leaving Deus Ex: Invicible War to rot in the shadows where it belongs. It was a good enough game, i admit that, but it didn't come close to the first one.

Hopefully it will go back to it's roots in terms of interaction, interface and gameplay, plus alot of new cool features ofcourse. Deus Ex 2 felt like a simple step backwards from the first title (not graphically speaking ofcourse).

Eidos has yet to prove themselves as a true developer and they have been around how long now??? These people better not mess this up. too much is riding on this game...its a legend as strong as Mario, Sonic, Samus and even Snake...The first game was amazing. the second was good, very polished but still lacking something. this one better be perfect.
I'd say get Warren Spector on board and everything will be cool.

"Unfortunately, expectation is about all gamers have for Deus Ex 3. Eidos has not yet revealed a release date or platforms for the game, though a rep for the publisher said both will be revealed at a later date." Gamespot, please learn to be honest soon. No gamer who has more than half a brain has expectations for this game. Thanks DX@2 and the great Xbox dumbing down of so many great PC games.

pinksandcocaine: "I think the second one is unfairly maligned. Is it as detailed or unique as the first? No, not at all. But it's still definitely a fun and engaging FPS that manages to have some features that most games in the genre do not. I'm not saying it's amazing, but I just don't get how it's abysmal."

The actual game is not, in itself, abysmal. Taken by itself it's a pretty good FSP with a decent storyline. However, it can't be taken by itself as long as it bears the Deus Ex name. Just having that name attached requires that it meets a much higher standard. It has to meet the standards set by the first game, very high standards indeed. In that area, DX2 is, in fact, abysmal. It just can't be judged in a vacuum, which is a shame. It would have done better as a stand-alone game.

And burnsound, Spector was involved in DX2. Apparently his touch is not enough to make gold out of straw. Time to give someone else a shot at it, since Spector apparently "lost it" somewhere along the line.

wow just wow! crysis, resident evil 5 can go suck donkeys balls

as primarily a console gamer i was disappointed to see cross platform development ruined the second game, after being a massive fan of the first on PC

just make it for the PC first!! and then port it across please

Unfortunately, Warren Specter is not working on it. So, I hope they keep the original DX's merits. Especially it's intelligent story elements like it's abstract philosophical ideas.

  • JackBurton

OMG! It better be faithful to the Original PC version, and not DX2. If its not made with the PC first in mind, it may likely suck too- as do many multiplatform titles these days.

Ubi Montreal made some games for old franchises like Prince of Persia, Tomb Raider and I think Assasin' s Creed. Not really great games but good. They sure will port it to the console market so I' m expecting a better DX 2 which had some moments but was bad: besides the interface, small maps, the factions sucked, dumb A.I., bugs and crashes, the mods were also bad and points systems where taken out.
I hope they don' t think yet another IP to milk and do a proper PC game. sorry console guys but your consoles don' t do justice to a game like Deus Ex. Maybe if PS 4 or XBOX 720 appears.

Good, hope they can bring back the feel of the original. And focusing on the PC instead of dumbing it down for consoles would be great. Invisible War could have been so much more if they hadn't over-simplified the whole thing for the console market.
