PS3 updated, PC-to-PSP store launches

Sony tweaks its console firmware as it launches new service allowing nonconsole-based downloads; new PS Store content, games half price for Thanksgiving.

Today, Ubisoft upset many PlayStation 3 owners by revealing that its exclusive for the console, Haze, has been delayed until next year. Luckily, as the day went on, owners of the resurgent platform and its handheld sibling received a bevy of good news from Sony itself.

Firstly, Sony has upgraded the PS3's firmware to version 2.01. The minor update's major feature is increased stability during gameplay and Web surfing. The update also sharpens graphics upscaling for PlayStation 2 games on those PS3s with backward compatibility, and corrects a remote start error that led to some consoles being turned on by accident.

PS3 owners also now have a variety of new options to choose from in the PlayStation Store. Sony has decided to celebrate the US Thanksgiving holiday by releasing two casual games that use the PlayStation Eye camera--Operation Creature Feature and Aquatopia--for $4.99 and $1.99, respectively. The PlayStation store now also offers a $2.99 expansion pack for fl0w, a $9.99 Need for Speed ProStreet Collector's Edition upgrade, and the extensive list of downloadable Rock Band songs revealed last week. In addition to the new content, Sony also temporarily discounted several older downloadable PS3 games on the PlayStation Store. Calling All Cars, fl0w, PixelJunk Racers, and Everyday Shooter have all been reduced to $4.99 through November 29.

Ironically, arguably Sony's biggest news of the day didn't have anything to do with the PS3 at all. This afternoon, the company launched the PlayStation Store for the PC, which will give PlayStation Portable owners who don't own a PS3 access to downloadable games for the first time. The international shop, located at store.playstation.com, offers many of the PlayStation 1-to-PSP ports currently available in the PS3 PlayStation store, such as Twisted Metal 2 and Tekken 2. It also offers several games designed for the PSP (Wipeout Pure, Syphon Filter Combat Ops) demos, game videos, and PSP themes. A full list of titles can be found on the official PlayStation Blog. Although the games bear an à la carte charge, the service itself is free, although it does require a special application to download games to a PC and then transfer them to a PSP.

You guys are all on crack for praising this. Yeah, it's a great idea but I have to hook it up to my PC with a USB cable? Why in the WORLD isn't this integrated with the PSP OS so I can download them directly? Hell, I can't even transfer the stuff to my memory stick duo via my laptop's card reader. That is crap.

AHHHHHH! WHY IS EVERYONE SAYING THAT!!! PEOPLE ARE SAYING IT IN THEIR SLEEP! THEY KNOW THAT PEOPLE WANT IT......its just a matter of time. No one knows when the in-game-XMB is coming, but it's apparently on their list. It'll probably coincide with the release of some music heavy game or something.

That's cool. I wish home was out though. I also wish MGS4 was out. I wish I had a HDTV to play one on. I wish I had the cash to buy a PS3 as well. If I had at least $1500 to spend on all of that I would get one. Especially for home and MGS4....wait, home and MGS4 aren't worth $1500 to me, and either are the 7-10 cool games that are out for it, that would cost an additional sum of money altogether to purchase. Does that make sense, or am I crazy?

This is good for people that are buying these games for their PSP. I'm glad however that I found a 60GB PS3 3 weeks ago when I finally picked one up. Plays all my games from each gen flawlessly, and the PS3 even plays some of my games that my PS2 and PS didnt even recognize anymore from the scratches. It has brought life back into my library of going on 500 strong PS and PS2 games. Kudos to Sony

    "its been over a year since PS3 came out....NOT ONE KILLER-APP ?!?!?"

Oh yeah man, I've been having such a rotten time of it with Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, new Blu-ray releases, etc. What a terrible time to own a PS3. Riiight.

The Japanese store totally PC-PSP store pwns. There are over 100 classic PSone games compared to the US's 15 or so. I can't tell what most of the games are, but they do have Biohazard (Resident Evil). Why so little love for the US, Sony?

Sorry oscarito, you already had your chance to get the emotion engine, but apparently you didn't want to pay for it. Now you're stuck with only 80% backwards compatibility if you buy one. What a terrible deal! (/sarcasm)

Also, judging by his profile, he's exactly the kind of guy who is trying to sink the PS3. Sorry guys, not gonna happen!

That's good, every little feature makes a difference. Now I can get stuff for my PSP since I don't have a PS3...though I guess this will be kinda obsolete once I do get one. More options are always good though. I'm really happy overall with what all 3 companies are doing to satisfy the customer thus far.

  • oscaritoqueloco

    Posted Nov 21, 2007 12:05 pm PT

what's the excitement??? Nothing impressive... absolutely nothing. They are now upscaling PS2 games, and a month or so ago they said - Hey we wont include BC on the 40 gig PS3 only because we think the PS2 is a thing of the past and people with the PS3 should focus on the PS3. Damn isnt that friggin ironic? Man they continue sticking it to the gamers and all of you continue taking anything they say good. Until I hear that PS3s include the Emotion engine again, I wont buy one or probably Ill find a 60gig somewhere. But there are a lot of stupid people out there and they dont know what they are getting with the 40 gig, Sony in essence is ripping them of.

Sony told all of the PS3 owners to sit tight because they would be doing big things by the end of the year. In my opinion, the arcade was the only thing that the 360 have/had over the PS3 Now that Sony has something like it, Microsoft had better watch out.
