Blood Bowl blitzes 360, DS, PSP

France-based Cyanide confirms new platforms for tongue-in-cheek, fist-in-face parody of American football.

French developer Cyanide is readying an all-out blitz on gamers with four versions of Blood Bowl. The studio was first revealed to be adapting Games Workshop's tabletop board game last year, and as of August was only making a PC edition of the game.

The company is now touting a year of growth that saw it open a Montreal satellite studio, and expand its offerings beyond PC games and onto console and handheld titles, as well as middleware. That's not the only expansion the company has made, as today it today it confirmed Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, and PlayStation Portable versions of Blood Bowl.

Cyanide also revealed a release window for Blood Bowl, saying it should sack gamers in late 2008.

"GenericFanboy Posted Nov 19, 2007 1:31 pm GMT Blood Bowl is all fine and well but when are we going to get a Gorkamorka game?"

YES!!! I've been keeping tabs on blood Bowl for a while and am really hoping for a great PC version with a decent league, customisation, etc but a version of GorkaMorka would rule! That game was so much fun. It was quite refreshing to approach every game with a complete disregard for your guy's safety, just so long as there was pure mayhem!

i hope they follow the rule of the bloodbowl.
It's a realy good game and it's possible to create a great video game.
It will be necessary a functional multiplayer sistem!!

    I want:
    - Tournaments online over Xbox live.
    - Be able to customize my team colors, logo and names.
    - Up to date Living Rulebook rules.
    - Cheerleaders and coach for each teams.
    - Blood and gore...duh...
    - To see the crowd go berserk on a player who gets thrown off the pitch.
    - Weather

In other words i want the board game to video game conversion to be intact. The only thing that might not make it is the ability to cheat that was part of the board game. Im ok with that. Free teams, no more painting, no more board game setup... sweet.

I don't play sports games, but this might be the one I try. Now if they want to add MAGIC to the gameplay, maybe some hot elf babe cheerleaders and centaur referees, I think then we'd have a no-contest purchase.

And I knew that people would make "yay, Mutant League Football" comments. This is a tabletop game, and a rather fun one at that...and Mutant League Football was EA's way of trying to cop off the idea as their own.

With as good of a game as Loki was, I'm sure that Cyanide will make this one excellent as well!

"Anyone still remember Pig Skin Footbrawl from back in the day?"

That game sucked at least 500 bucks in quarters out my pockets. I'm praying for a remake of that game.

This looks good though (not in a pigskin way, but I'm a fan of the table top game). I hope it's not turn based though. I'm for hopeing it's RTS style at least. I like the idea of a pause/play mechanic, but with two players that gets nuts (and boring).

To the developers: If you do go wtih a pause/play mechanic (like in their other Bloodbowl type game) put a time limit on it per the match. So like in chess, you only get 1 minute of stoppage time, or something like that. It would keep the kind of frezied play that Bloodbowl was made for.

    Posted Nov 19, 2007 10:30 am PT

From reading the forums of Cyanide Studios it seems that there will be two game variants, an RTS- sports sim type game mode and also a turn based version using the rules from the most current edition of the table top game (http://www.blood-bowl.net/LRB_PBBL/LivingRulebook5.pdf).

The single player campaign mode will be somewhat similar to the PS2 game: Gladius, in that you will travel around the map playing games in different towns and recruiting players from around the world.

I hope they include the turn based version on the Xbox 360 release, it'd be great to play an in depth strategy game over xbox live.

    "@Asurael
ALL GW games sucked before DoW? Are you including Space Hulk (the old DOS 486 game) with that? Space Hulk was a great game. Hard too. At least, I remember thinking so when i was 13." --BewilderedRonin

I was in college when I played it. It was a good game, almost like an arcade combined with strategy. I've recently setup a win98 virtual machine, I'll have to dig up the Space Hulk floppies (I still have it all) & see if I can get it to work.

Also a good game was Chaos Gate. It was like X-COM. Another one
I'll need to install on my virtual machine..

SteelWingX you are a moron. Wikipedia Blood Bowl, this franchise has been around WAY longer than Mutant League. In fact mutant league was inspired by Blood Bowl. Sit down and think before you open your mouth kiddy.

  • Sammi_Logan

    Posted Nov 18, 2007 11:21 am PT

DredWulf: Wrong, actually. It's based on the fantasy game, not the sci-fi one. No space marines, or 40K orks (though there should be both a Goblin team and a separate Orc team).

I've got the tabletop version, and I hope they replicate it as closely as possible.

Games Workshop can just keep on making games as far as I am concerned.
    Can't wait!

  • Rolld6

    Posted Nov 18, 2007 6:25 am PT

I hope they develop it with the 'choice of die roll result', so you can decide whether to push or knock down, not just automatically take the knock down. This will offer a deeper level of strategy to the game, that most 'Core Blood Bowlers' loved. The PC version of this game developed years ago did not offer this choice and took away quite a bit of thinking. I also hope their online play and league play is handled well. I will be following this one closely.

for all of you who don't know the mythos..Blood Bowl is Warhammer with football same makers GW and same factions. So there are football teams from all over the empire or imperium. Yes Space Marine and Chaos Space Marine and Ork Football. it's a good classic game.
