Ghostbusters to slime consoles, PC

Supernatural cult classic confirmed by December cover of Game Informer as coming to Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii, PC; Aykroyd, Ramis-penned script to be sequel to first two films.
By Tom Magrino, GameSpot
Posted Nov 14, 2007 4:53 pm PT

In January, a developer working for Slovenian outfit Zootfly uploaded to popular video-sharing site YouTube what appeared to be footage of a new game based on the 1984 cult classic Ghostbusters. In an interview with GameSpot, Zootfly chief Bostjan Troha said that the footage was from a prototype build for the game running on an Xbox 360, but copyright issues were preventing the project from moving forward.

It appeared Zootfly had succeeded in its legal wranglings in February, when Dr. Raymond Stantz himself, under the guise of prolific comedian Dan Aykroyd, revealed to the Edmonton Sun that former copyright holders Sony had sold the rights to the game to Universal Studios, and that he would be doing mo-cap work for the game "next year." Despite Aykroyd's statements, Universal Studios owner Vivendi refused to confirm the game's existence.

Vivendi's silence on the matter gained reason today, as the cover of the December issue of Game Informer reveals that a Ghostbusters game is indeed in development, but it will reportedly not involve Zootfly's demo. The game is being developed on the Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii, and PC. A release window has not yet been revealed, nor has a publisher or developer yet been attached to the project.

True to his word, Aykroyd will have a hand in the project, penning the script with fellow supernatural scientist Egon, aka Harold Ramis. Forgoing a theatrical release, the game will serve as a direct sequel to the first two Ghostbusters films, with Ramis, Aykroyd, and Bill Murray all signed on to reprise their roles.

I played the Ghostbusters game on the Atari 2600 back in the 80's. All you did was run from one location to another and trap the same ghost over and over. There was no art direction to speak of, not even fun colors. The game was probably made in less than five days. Back then I'd play anything.

Well, the Genesis GB game was pretty good (though the later levels were a bit too maze-like) so I hope this one will be good. Plus, get Ernie Hudson involved! It seems none of the GB games have Winston in them.

i can see it now, fps, online co-op with 3 other people, timed mode with teams of 4 all going at once, person who busts the most ghosts in the time limit the winner, driving sections, new york city as your domain...... this has the chance to be an all time great game...... i so want this to pay off! grew up on this and turtles and they made a complete hash of the 2nd one lol

Just having the original cast onboard makes me feel good about it. Hopefully, the script will lend more to the first movie than the second. The key is for Ramos to reign in Aykroyd a little. Regardless, I was skeptical when I saw the demo from earlier this year. Hopefully a first rate developer will step up and give us something to be excited about.

Hopefully it will be a fpb (first person buster.. 'bustin makes me feel good!') where you catch the ghost in the capture beam and lead it into the trap (which could have timer). Then, maybe a mad drive back to headquarters to deposit the ghost in the containment unit. With wii controls, the drop-off could work like interfacing with machinery in Metroid Prime 3.

OMFG!!!!! I played this for AGES on my Commodore 64 - and boy - I still have my 64 and this game! Bet alot of 'oldsters' can remember the packaging and fold out instruction sheet and everything!

This in a 3D New York multiple random mission generated open world non linear game could be the best thing since Bethesda thought up The Elder Scrolls and Valve got together for the original Half Life!

Cult classic? Ghostbusters was freakin' huge in the 80s. HUGE. Like, as popular as Star Wars, Back to the Future, Indiana... it was as big as all those movies. Then there were the cartoons, the video game tie-ins, the music. Look up the definition of cult classic, please.

And who said Bill Murray isn't funny anymore? Life Aquatic? Lost in Translation? Get a grip.

A lot of this is going to depend on who is developing it. Also, writing a game is a lot different than writing a video game. I hope the guys consult some of the people in the industry.

This game is going to be sweet. I can't wait. If they have some kind of cool ghost catching mechanic like in Luigi's Mansion it should be a lot of fun. Add a great script and the original actors and you've got a classic!

Since Ghostbusters as a film would take too long and probably not be as good, this is pretty good news. A game that takes 8 - 10 hours (or hopefully, more) to complete should be able to tell a pretty good story in line with the films. I hope it doesn't lean too heavily on sand-box style play, as I do see pointless driving portions as a drawback. What I wan't is a good script set in the Ghostbusters' universe, while telling a pretty darn good ghost story in its own right. Remember all of the unique ghosts featured in short clips in the two films--those couold be regular enemies, plus some new ones. Give them some decent AI too--I don't want to just run up and taze every enemy into submission. Bosses should range on a pretty good scale. Viggo, Zool, those two dog creatures, and yes, the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man should be unlockable boss challenges--although not part of the main game, since this is supposed to be a true sequel.

That is awsome that Ramis Aykroyd and Murray have all signed on. It wouldn't be the same without the trio of dorks duking it out with the supernatural. I am pretty sure that this will be a bargain bin game, but I can always hope that they do something fun and unexpected with it.
