Harmonix Phases onto iPod

Latest game from developer of Guitar Hero, Rock Band now available for Apple's portable media player.

Last week, word of a new Harmonix project surfaced in the form of a Game Developers Conference session listing titled "Your Music is the Game: Designing the OTHER Project at Harmonix." The session description mentioned that the game would bring the developer's trademark beat-matching gameplay (as seen in Amplitude, Frequency, and the Guitar Hero series) with procedurally generated note charts to a "new and uniquely cool platform."

Today, Harmonix not only officially announced the game, but also released it. Currently available for the iPod Nano, iPod Classic, and fifth-generation iPods, Phase allows players to play a simple beat-matching game with the media player's clickwheel while listening to a special "Phase Music" playlist. Said playlist must be manually created in iTunes because the game cannot automatically draw from a user's music library.

The game takes songs between 30 seconds and 30 minutes in length that are stored in .MP3, .M4A, or .M4P file formats, and converts the music into a playable level. The game also comes with a handful of tracks already on it, including songs from Harmonix favorites Freezepop and Bang Camaro.

Players can play one song at a time or five-song minimarathons, and high scores are stored on the iPod for bragging rights. Phase is available on the iTunes music store for $4.99.

This is not the first such iPod game to incorporate a user's music library into the gameplay. In August, NanaOn-Sha, developer of PaRappa the Rapper and Vib Ribbon, released musika, which based its gameplay on the names of tracks on the user's iPod.

It is odd they not done a version of this for the touch since there is some 3rd party web based ones as well as some direct 3rd party apps for unlocked iphones already doing this

This really begs the question why don't you do that for Rock Band as well.

Just got this game and I have to say I'm seriously impressed. It's really fun and I can see myself playing this whenever I'm out and about, but a bit bored. I've tried making my own playlists and it maps most songs with a strong beat really well. So basically this game could have an endless amout of songs. And only Ł4. Harmonix should put that mapping feature into it's rock band games, although I know it never will since it's gunna an insane amount of money off the extra songs, but it would have been awesome.

    @dorohala

Actually it depends on what iPod you're using.
I know this is for new gen iPods, but I've had an iPod mini for 2 years now, and it's still going strong.
You're probablly using an iPod nano or something, which have a long history of breakage, more expensive iPods have a longer life, both phyiscal, and battery.

Anyhoo, I can't see a game like this having a major hit on gamers, but could be fun for a bus ride!

I AM a Sony fanboy and I'll admit that the ipods are gorgeous and innovative. Now if only they would pack in a decent set of earbuds.

it's DRM, and the ipod is extremely easy to hack and turn into more or less a drag and drop MP3, making it mroe functional.

Not to mention Zune are ugly from an aesthetic standpoit, as are Archos.

diablobasher, lord-of-gamers and some others on here... What? There is nothing wrong with the Ipod or Zune. I have a Zune and my daughter has an Ipod and we have both been using them for a long time. They both function great are reliable and are easy to use. The only problem I have is niether offers a free and easy way to convert video and both companies can shove their DMR up their @$$es

Hope it works, but for the love of god, please no singstar iPod games. It's bad enough when people sing along to stuff they're listening to; having them *try* is even worse.

I thought the whole point of rock band, guitar hero etc was to rock out to awesome songs with a cool peripheral.
They should call it "i-hero", because there is nothing rock-and-roll about pressing buttons on an mp3 player..

Guitar hero is cool because you hold the guitar controller, press the buttons and its like you are rockin' out.

This is the same as having a dance dance revolution title on an ipod, there is only so much I can press before it just gets really boring.

Although, I sure would like to tinker with this, see how it maps out songs that are on my ipod

All harmonix need to do now is create a similar program for a new guitar hero game - where you can put in your own tunes and it maps out a game for you.

Yeah Zune is a heap, same goes for all other players including Sony. The only one better than the iPod is Acer/simiilar's drag and drop 20gb MP3 players.

Dont get me wrong i hate apple and the ipod, but it's the most stylish and functional MP3 player around, the only people who can't admit this are sony/microsoft fanboys.

I'd have to say its a pretty neat app, quite a nice throwback to Amplitude and Frequency. Also a nice surprise to check iTunes after the update and see a Harmonix game. It even includes a Freezepop song to play along to. Its not perfect, but for 5 dollars who really cares. I like it and Im sure I'll get my 5 bucks worth while in an airport or waiting around campus.

They're not going to release a gaming service for 15 people. It wouldn't be cost-effective.

It's a cool little idea as an app, but if you really wanted to sit down and play it for 5-10 minutes, it's pretty much failure as the iPod buttons aren't as crisp and responsive enough to play this game fast.

Considering this is just a fun little app, it's a REALLY cool idea. People complaining about it seem to be expecting a full-fledged video game with all the perks and niceties/luxuries of a console title, but... No, this is iPod stuff.

What's more, it's Harmonix. Thumbs up, guys, too few games utilize people's own soundtracks.

This wouldn't seem so bad if the controls were a little more specific than, "the turn wheel."

If the controls are decent, then it's a decent approach, but if they aren't, then it's a face flat approach. Either way, this isn't something great.

WTF? This doesn´t sound good at all. I konw technology has come down along ways to be able to play this type of rythm based games on an mp3 player... I just don´t think its come that far to play it and have fun as on a console or on any other level.

It's tempting to update my third generation iPod just to get a crack at this game. It might be disappointing to see it appear on the iPod rather than on a "real" games console, but this is where people have their music stashed in the first place. There's no better platform for this kind of "your music is the game" concept.
