Godzilla, SimCity Societies ready to rumble

Movie icon and tall buildings ready to take their heated feud to retail charts as Atari and Electronic Arts confirm gold status of games.

Godzilla and major metropolitan cities have metaphorically gone toe-to-toe many times, but the result is always a mayor's worst nightmare. While cities have essentially gone 0-for-a-million in the long-standing rivalry, that might change this holiday season as the two familiar foes take their struggle into the retail arena.

The rumble in the concrete jungle is nearly here once again. Atari today announced that Godzilla Unleashed for the PlayStation 2 and Wii has gone gold, while Electronic Arts revealed that SimCity Societies for the PC has achieved the same status.

Looking at the tale of the tape, Godzilla Unleashed was developed by Pipeworks Software, the studio with considerable experience bringing the gargantuan metaphor of the dangers of scientific progress to the world of games. They also handled the last two games starring the movie monster, 2002's Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee and 2004's Godzilla: Save the Earth.

Meanwhile, SimCity Societies development was handled by Tilted Mill Entertainment. The team at Tilted Mill has never worked with the venerable SimCity franchise before, but it does have experience with both the city-building genre and picking up an established franchise. Its debut title was Immortal Cities: Children of the Nile, which it followed up with another historic city-building sim (and the latest iteration of an Impressions Games PC series), Caesar IV.

EA set a specific launch date of November 13 for its city-building spin-off in North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia. However, it seems nobody wants to tell the jade giant where to be or when; Atari is saying only that Godzilla Unleashed will be out this holiday season.

I Won't buy Godzilla because i don't think it will be a good game and it's only coming out for the PS2 (I dont own the other consoles). SimCity Societies looks cool and may bring back those memories.

Wahoo for irony! But really, it would have been such a great game if the two had been combined...

I'd love to stomp the neo-punk anarchist city I just created as Godzilla. Silly anarchists, too bad you don't have a government to protect you from Godzilla.

I still play simcity 2000. hate 3000 and 4. Simtower is fun as heck but an eyesore. I only like the Sims online which everyone else collectively says sucks. Never was into Godzilla games, always perfered King of the monsters on NEO GEO.

Is anyone else tired of all these rehashed games? It just seems like the Simcity series is getting desperate now that they have to include global warming elements to the game. Here is a question I want to ask: Why isn't a new Simtower game being developed? I was a huge fan of Simtower, but for some reason, the game has never been redone. With the introduction of 3D, the possiblities would be endless. It would take the Sims to a whole new level. I think EA should start developing something like this instead of doing rehashes like new Sims expansions and the like.

finaleve> the title definately hooked me at first. LOL

I've never played any Godzilla game, and I haven't played a SimCity game since SimCity 2000.

Say, wouldn't a blend of a city builder and monster masher game be pretty good anyway? Hmmmmmm.

xcollector > because its still marveled to this day. Its one of the franchises that really has no competition, so they can keep pumping out new games for the series, updating it here and there.

I thought that the 2 were going to be connected somehow. Meaning you'd have godzilla roaming in your town doing battle. Silly article headline

um, no. there hasn't been a sim city game since 2003, and prior to that, 1998. do your homework before you start spewing crap all over everyone.

How can people still play sim city? Back in the day Sim City was a marvel for its time. Now it's just another one of EA's yearly rehashes.

I love Pipeworks. I used to work in the building they now occupy. It was, in fact, my last job, too.

EDIT: Er, I mean most previous job. I don't mean to imply I am unemployed. Heh... *^_^*
