Resident Evil scares up CG film

Capcom and Sony Pictures coproducing animated film to tell a new story from the zombie-ridden franchise; release set for 2008.
By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot
Posted Oct 29, 2007 2:38 pm PT

Game publisher Capcom and movie maker Sony Pictures Entertainment have teamed up to produce three live-action films based on the Resident Evil games, each more successful than the last at the US box office. The pair today announced that they are teaming up once again, this time on a full-length, computer-animated Resident Evil feature.

The film will be titled Biohazard: Degeneration (Biohazard is the Japanese name of the Resident Evil series), and will introduce a new storyline within the series' universe. Beyond that, the only detail available about the feature is that it will be released next year.

The companies didn't specify if that release will be theatrical or straight-to-DVD, although game-based CG films have taken both routes in the past. In 2001, Square Enix released Final Fantasy: Spirits Within in US theaters, and then announced its retreat from the movie business after it failed to live up to expectations. Last year it returned to the world of game-based CG films with Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, which was released straight-to-DVD, but received a much warmer reception than its theatrical cousin.

Capcom has a number of film projects currently in the works. The company is collaborating with Hyde Park Entertainment on a new Street Fighter movie featuring Chun Li as the central character. The film rights to Onimusha and Devil May Cry have also been sold by the company.

This is now one movie I'll enjoy waiting for, I'd hope the surviving S.T.A.R.S. members will make an appearance but I won't hold my breath on that matter even though It looks like Claire is in the movie. I'm also positive that other guy is Leon due to the brown leather jacket and it's sparked my curiosity as to why is he there armed, also why is Claire there if it actually is Claire?.

In any case I hope it doesn't end up being as horrible as the third live action Resident evil movie when it comes to story line, though I might be naive in saying I'm actually positive it won't.

I think this would be great. Since the first resident evil with movie clips in it, i always thought that would be a great movie if they just did it all in CGI.

Would love that... because, having so many games of RE, its easy to lose track of the story. I mean, i understand that the main story is told in RE 0-4 and on and on, but what about code veronica? and file outbreak? I asume that those are side stories, of how the virus affected other people. Anyway, i would really like to watch this, to understand better this story that is actually one of my favorites, and i really expect is based on the games too, because to me, the other movies, are a total letdown, with so little to do with the games.

So i cant wait. Bring them on. This will be awesome.

Dude, did you hear that, it states not one CGI movie, but THREE CGI movies are going to be made in total, not only that but this is going to be an ACTUAL TRUE Resident Evil movie for once, not like those other **** ones!, also what excites me is that theres also going to be an Onimusha and Devil May Cry movie, man Capcom you truely know whow to please you're fanbase[like me] don't you, this is GREAT!

Who knows, since its being developed by Sony as well, theres a chance there may be games for this on PlayStation 3!, how cool would that be if that happened, come you have to make a game based on these three movies too Capcom, this isn't going to be crazy enough[well actually will be!]but with a game, now that for sure is entertainment at its best!

Then we have Devil May Cry 4 and Resident Evil 5!

Not only that[sorry for going and on but I'm too excited at the moment for Resident Evil, hence my user name lol]but this CGI takes place one year after the events of Resident Evil 4 and three years before the events of Resident Evil 5, so what I'm getting on to or talking about, is that these three movies could explain whats happened between the events of Resident Evil 4-Resident Evil 5.

I mean in Resident Evil 4, the enemies or people, aren't exactly flesh eating zombies, there just crazy mindless people who were being controlled, then in Resident Evil 5 you see the same thing, the enemies or people aren't flesh eating zombies, but again just people who are crazy and mindless and maybe being controlled by Wesker or some other enemy, maybe the person with the mic...?

Anyway I was saying these three movies could and probably will, explain the events between Resident Evil 4-Resident Evil 5.

from what I hear the cg films will be following a brand new storyline....so..expect anything including not seeing the existing characters.

It is Capcom after all...you know how they love to leave loose ends.

I think that this will be well good coz all the characters will look how they did on the games n be able to stick to the same story line as the games.
But I personally like the RE films. They may not have been like the games but if they were you would know what to expect, plus having actors talk like what they did on the games would have been even worse. If you took away the title saying Resident Evil i think they would have been alot better, where as being called RE it has such a high expectation as it had alot to live up to. Everyone has an opinion though.

agreed with darthturkey....i really hated the movies, since they didnt actually follow the story lines, they had good action sequences but wth? its like a totally different universe shown in the movies where the t-virus also leaked out, only, alice(wth) was the main character...i hope this cg film is related to the original story, and hoping it contains the main characters(such as, Albert,Chris,Barry,Jill,Leon,Claire and others)

Well i hope the use all the main game characters for the cg films, not like the ones they used for those profected resident evil movies, when had nothing to do with games, yes they had Jill in the second film, and Clair & Albert in the 3rd, but still no sign of Chris or Barry.
As the that new cg final fantasy movie had all the characters from final fantasy 7 which i found the best game to movie let, as it had the main game charaters and had a similar story, same locations to final fantasy 7 game.
I would say these 3 cg resident movies might turn out, as Sony Pictures did a brillant job with the new final fantasy movie.

if the movies would follow the stories of the games then you could“ve just as well played them
besides I DO like the movies although I have the feeling some things are missing like where the hell did Jill went between RE 2 and 3 (movies)
the movies were good in my opinion
if they just followed the stories of the games it would be just reviewing something I have done already and that is a waste of my time
so stop jerking of and complaining and show some respect for some people's new ideas

Please, please, please... No more telekinetic actors/actresses that are not even part of the series and are the dominating role. Was Mila injected with the G-Virus? It's the only virus that actually brought someone back without mutating them. Aka Albert Wesker... But he can't even move things with his mind. All the movies were a big disappointment, but that is what happens when you have lazy directors. If only the director of the Silent Hill movie would have made Resident Evil. He has more passion for it and would probably make the series make sense. The Resident Evil movies completely drift away from the main point of Resident Evil, leaving out MAJOR important chunks.

i agree with all said, i adore milla j, but still to make jill, carlos, chris, claire, an EXTRA or a supporting role in a movie holding the name of the game-of-all-time, thats a big no no. if capcom should ever listen to any of our opinions ( and i do think i am speaking on behalf of every RE series fan) i think this CG should really follow up the original story of our beloved s.t.a.r.s, it should fill some/all the gaps in the story so far, like what happened next, umbrella's fall down, wesker's plans, etc. and one thing that is most important, the ZOMBIEs that gave the game its flavour.

Don't beat up on Mila, her aside the movies are poo. But you can't call them s***, give them some credit for revamping a story line, but poo still works. If they stuck to it too closely then you'd end up watching what you could have just gone out and played yourself. Hopefully Anderson will just choke on his tongue in his sleep.

I've faith that this CG adaptation will stay true to the story lines.

gully1419 The resident evil fims were **** and nothing to do with the story line what so ever, they just used the characters, i would actually spit on the director if i ever saw him for **** up such a beautiful story line, the films are corny, god damn milla J, trying to combine the matrix with horror, **** stupid!

Here here! And I thought I was the only one who thought Paul W. S. Anderson shouldn't be allowed to direct / write/produce/have anything to do with movies. The RE series of movies could have had so much more potential had they followed the plot of the games. The plots of the first couple games, although a little lost in translation, could have made classic zombie movies with a little rewriting. I guess Anderson isn't a gamer at all, or he might not have ruined the series. Its discraceful what he did to AvP. At least its not as bad as what Uwe Boll does to movies... Alone in the Dark... Bloodrayne... and prepare yourselves because Bloodrayne 2 and Postal are coming... Kill me now.

cg movies are better cause you can recreate the chareceter as you want which you cant do with a real time actor and you can put various sorts of special effects and stuff as well so personally i would like the dmc and onimusha series to be cg as well

The Resident Evil films do not do any justice to the games. They had so much potential to do a great adaptation of the games rich story, but they chose the mainstream crap that we get, like Spider-Man 3's dance moves, or Transformers "AMAZINGLY COMPLEX" story line. Ha, right. Hopefully they do a good job with the CG films, though I can't expect what I want.

I like CG movies. So much more you can do than Live Action. I like the live action Resident Evil movies, but I would rather watch a movie that takes place in some familiar and canon territory than an alterante Resident Evil universe. Hope that made sense.

Well it seems to be a good idea. When you do animated releases you tend to get away with more in terms of censorship. Even more if its a straight to DVD release though that hasnt been said yet.

Well, RE Extinction pretty much lived up ti my expectations, even surpassing them. It sucked a lot harder than I thought a movie could. So, maybe this animated one will redeem the series. I doubt it.
