Midway locks in PS3 Stranglehold

Gangster shooter based on John Woo's Hong Kong crime drama Hard Boiled takes to the streets on October 29.

Midway announced today that Stranglehold is certifiably gold on the PlayStation 3. The game, which is the continuation of John Woo's 1992 Hong Kong action epic Hard Boiled, will now be impacting retail shelves on October 29.

The PS3 version of Stranglehold was originally slated to follow the Xbox 360 and PC versions in September. However, earlier this month, Midway president and CEO David Zucker said that the teams developing both BlackSite: Area 51 and Stranglehold were having problems getting Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 to work as intended on Sony's hardware. Epic itself seems to be in a similar boat, as Midway also revealed at that time that Unreal Tournament III wouldn't be hitting its much-publicized 2007 release date on the PS3, though the PC version was still go for a November launch.

Stranglehold is being developed by the team behind 2004's Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy. Woo's gunplay-heavy film being the inspiration for the game, Stranglehold features highly destructible environments and a penchant for stylized, cinematic shooting sequences. GameSpot's review has more on what gamers can expect from the high-octane shooter.

Stranglehold is rated M for Mature and will retail for $59.99 on the PS3. The PS3 version will also receive a $69.95 collector's edition will include a high-definition version of Hard Boiled on the same Blu-ray disc as the game. A demo for the game is currently available on the PlayStation Network.

I'm on this game, irregardless. Considering the huge complaint of this game being short in length, since I don't have a lot of time anymore to run games like I used to, maybe that'll stretch the game out for me. LOL I'm gettin' the collector's edition, just o have it. Who knows when (if) I'll watch the movie portion. But, it'll be there. I loved the showing for this @ E3. As with other games deemed "suspect" in my collection, I want it, because I want it. Glad that it's finally gold.

The PS3's Stranglehold version got delayed for game's general release because of PS3 development problems, so did Unreal Tournament III, as well as Fatal Inertia. I'm guessing GTAIV and Army of Two got delayed because of PS3 development problems, even though nobody will say so, but that'd just following the delay trends of the year.

Are we all really supposed to get our panties in a bunch over an old John Woo flick. The game has been out on 360 for a couple months now and the same game will be put out for the PS3.

To all the gamers, do you really want to wait months to get the same product, just so you can get the movie as well?
ITS A GAME SYSTEM AND ITS A GAME!!!!!! I HAVE A MOVIE COLLECTION FOR THAT!!!!

Stop appologizing for Sony, they are big boys and they will eventually fix there mistakes. For now, sorry but for a game system the Wii and X360 have the job for non-fanboy gamers that want good quality games and gameplay.

Not even worth getting. The 360 is nice and PS3 version looks just bout the same. To me the game is not worth $60 when you take into consideration how short it is. As for the movie its old yes its a classic but I got this movie many years ago. Yes its on Blue Ray but its an old movie that really doesnt take advantage of the storage space of BR. If this game was $30 or even $40 dollars I would def pick up a copy. But short game length, lackluster multiplayer, and an out dated movie as a bonus just doesnt do it for me. I wish developers would have used the time they had to work on special PS3 specific extras making the 360 look pale by comparison.

I cant understand why people like this game. I mean I like GTA, I love 3rd person stuff. But this game is stale. And it goes back to how is Ran C "which is 50 times more the game than this" Get kinda discredited? Well I know why, but I just wanted to post lol

Midway is delaying UT III for PS3 to protect the sales of Stranglehold and Area 51, but it will only obtain to reduce the sales of UT III if they lost the holyday lauchship dates. In Midway are dumbs.

I was very excited about this game when I first heard about it. Then, couple of years later I played the demo on 360 and it was a big disappointment. I just hope they would fix _many_ things on the game. The concept is great though, but the graphics are dated.

Too bad this game sucks. Wasn't Midway banking on this game to be their number one seller to pull themm out of the red or something? I laughed when I read their press statement about that. And to Tarex, UT3 isn't UE3 tech, it is a game and it is a game that isn't out yet on any platform. And I believe GRAW2 uses UE3 tech as well. Right?

sir_pickle that is NOT why the games on the PS3 come out later than the 360/PC it is because it is difficult to work on ,not because its too powerful.

If that was the case then ALL PC games would come out even later than the PS3's.

Max Payne was a more enjoyable game. It was the true original. Tequila time is a ripoff of Bullet Time. Stronghold is simply another rehash of Max.

I really don't see what the big deal is, considering the game isn't really any good. What's so special about John Woo anyways? His imitators, at least in the video game department, have done better than him.

I felt the game was very dull, and I love this type of game. Just run around shooting, slidding over stuff, slo-mo gun battles (Done better in Max Payne). Really has little to do with the movie its based on except the main character. And since I own the out of print Criteron Collection DVD I really don't need the movie.

theclaw..what does Atari have to do with anything. It's not even relevant..Atari only published a couple unreal games because they bought gt interactive under the infogrames name then switched over to atari. Also unreal 3 is getting a lot of flake because everyone is using it this gen. Probably people who shouldn't be...so unreal's support is thin...plus the ps3 architecture is a pain.

Unreal Engine 3 keeps getting lots of controversy. Especially considering just how successful the Unreal Engine 2.x powered Unreal Tournament 2004 was.

And remember, Atari published it! People conveniently "forget" that.

Some people are saying the Collectors Edition is a rip off. This is only true if you don't like the game. 10 bucks for a BluRay movie is a spectacular deal. If you don't like the game than of course the CE is a rip off since your paying 70$ for a movie, but if you do like the game (as you should if you are considering it) then 10$ for the film makes this one of the best CE values in years! That's cheaper than movies at the freakin' theater!!!

Can I ask why everyone insults games when they are a year old or something? I don't mind if it is actually out of date technology wise or outdated gameplay wise but considering my GF got a PS3 just 5 days ago I can say that there isn't that many games that beat the pants off of strangelhold (not saying the PS lineup is bad I'm just saying I like strangelhold and think it is a good addition to the Playstation games) and if I got a PS3 I would probably get it even if it's a YEAR OLD!!!! So long as the game is still good then don't knock it, hell I'll probably pick up strangelhold when it's cheaper since I have other games I want at the moment but then it'll be 2 YEARS OLD!!! I am serious though can someone please give me there opinion.
