Hopkins heads Beowulf cast

Oscar-winning actor makes game debut alongside Ray Winstone, Brendan Gleeson, and Sebastian Roche in Ubisoft's upcoming action adventure.

Paramount Pictures scored an all-star cast of highly acclaimed actors for its upcoming big-screen adaptation of the quintessential Anglo-Saxon heroic epic Beowulf, which is due out in theaters next month. Today, Ubisoft announced that a few of those actors would be reprising their roles in the upcoming action adventure tie-in, due out for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Xbox 360, and PC in November.

Having already established himself as one of Britain's most prolific stage and screen actors, Sir Anthony Hopkins will make his in-game voice-acting debut articulating the role of King Hrothgar. A highly decorated actor, Hopkins won an Academy Award for his role as the maniacal cannibal Hannibal Lector in Silence of the Lambs and was nominated for the prestigious honor for his supporting role in Amistad, as well as leading roles in Nixon and Remains of the Day.

Hopkins will be joined by a trio of in-game voice-acting rookies. Ray Winstone, who plays the titular role of Beowulf, mostly recently appeared in Martin Scorsese's Oscar-winning The Departed. Best known for his role as the off-kilter dark arts professor Alastor Moody in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Brendan Gleeson will lend his voice to the role of Wiglaf. Rounding out the cast is Sebastian Roche as Wulfgar; Roche is otherwise known for his work on the daytime soap General Hospital.

Maybe it is just me, but it seems from the TV commercials that most of the men in this movie have faces that look like women. What is up with that?

Anthony Hopkins is great in any movie, but I'll have to wait for the reviews on this one.

The original material was not a novel. Even if that were true, it by no means is the first.
Folks commenting should, at the very least, google the subject first.

Anthony Hopkins adds a touch of class to any project he's involved in. This game just got more promising.

Except for Alexander. I threw up a little while watching that movie. Angelina looked hot though.

Sir Anthony Hopkins and Ray Winstone! Wow, it's surprising to see games getting such great actors in for voice acting!

Beowulf is a fantastic poem, but I can't see the film or the game living upto it.

Could rank up there with Spider Man 2, Return of the King and Riddick.

oh wow ubi is behind this too, surprise, surprise. that also means it should be well designed and follow the story very closely. if its anything like how they worked out King Kong, we should all expect nothing short of a brilliantly well designed game.

Least EA isn't making the video game..it might have a chance on being a good game or at least decent one.

Considering the book is very graphic, and that its meant for an older audience (even though they make High School kids read it because it was one of the first ever novels) and to see them bump the movie down to PG-13 I will not see it. They showed promise in early showings, with the actual nude goddess figure, pieces of creature flying and what not. Now not so much. The monster Grendel was an ogre like twisted freak, and they DISMEMBERED him with bloody satisfaction, as he continued to fight with his limbs being hacked off. Shame on them for trying to squeeze a few extra bucks outta this film, this truly could have been the next 300, but they dumbed down the material.

Personally, I love the technology used for the Beowulf movie and game, but I'm not a fan of the style of either one. Maybe I haven't delved deep into older fantasies, but it just doesn't pull me in as much as something like Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia, or even Pan's Labyrinth. Hopefully, it's ambitious scope can at least make up for Grendel's mediocre character design (or have we not seen him yet?).

The movie doesn't make me jump for joy, and the game isn't doing much to sway my opinion...Hopefully though, the voice talents won't be put to waste and this game will turn out decent.

Slowly but surely, amazing talent is seeping it's way into our, at one time, small world of gaming. I know that this game is attached to a movie and Hopkins was probably only introduced to the game after agreeing to be in the film but this still is only good news. Talented writing, acting, and just general story telling is really noticed in a game when it's done well. Also, when the storyline and characters are represented and played so well it make's a games lifespan much longer. I love next-gen graphics and gameplay but what I'm really excited about now is the quality of the fiction I'm going to experience. It seems that by now developers should able to pull off the gameplay unless their publisher pushs out the game too quickly but the story will always be the hardest thing to give life to.

Well, at least it'll sound good. Being a movie game means it's doomed.

They have all these great actors doing voices in games, which is great, now they need to have the guys who animate charcters take some acting classes. Models often ruin the link between voice and action because are out of sync and/or lacking emotion and life.

It's always nice to get good voice acting in a game. So many now days lack that. Of course if the script is bad, it's not going to reflect well on the actors. I have to disagree with lukey####, the movie and game are being codeveloped, and even if it was based soley on the movie, that fact alone does not a suckee game make.
