Army of Two furloughed 'til '08

Electronic Arts delays its co-op shooter from original November release date to give it another coat of polish.

A rough-around-the-edges group of ragtag military misfits might be able to make the grade in theaters (Stripes, In the Army Now, and Delta Farce), but "rough around the edges" just doesn't cut it in the latest volley of console wars. As a result, Electronic Arts has delayed the release of its co-op-focused third-person shooter Army of Two, according to a report from Reuters.

Previously expected to see release on November 13, Army of Two has been shuffled back into EA's early 2008 lineup, with the publisher saying it needs the extra time to polish the shooter. The game will be one of three semi-comic military-themed titles from EA next year, along with Bad Company and Mercenaries 2, which were both delayed from 2007 release dates themselves.

In recent years, EA has delayed a number of games for quality concerns, although the final products have delivered mixed results. Most notably, the publisher pushed back 2006's Superman Returns--only to have it become critical kryptonite. The Godfather, which missed the lucrative holiday sales season in 2005, landed respectable reviews upon its release in 2006.

The game has been under development at EA's Montreal studio since 2005. For more on Army of Two, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

This game is gonna be insane for Co-op! Me and my friend are gonna are gonna have a blast with this! He's a stay back, long-range kind of shooter. And I like to rush in and take everyone out with med. range weapons like M16A4s, and G36c. It's gonna be sick with the exclusive weapons for pre-orderers!

    Boi-of-doom made an excellent point.
It is really quite stupid for developers to generate hype in the form of release dates. Because if the game is not released on that date, many people will get angry that the developers keep postponing the date a little bit more each time. An example I could draw from this was The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Gamecube. While it was a good game, it was dragged further into development for about a year and a half beyond what they said they would release it. I had it pre-ordered for a full year, and felt like withdrawing it.

I totally agree. I have seen some games released this year that would have been a marvellous piece if the developer would have taken the time to add a little more creativity (i.e. Stranglehold, MOH Airborne, ACE Combat 6, etc.) I was also very dissapointed with Hour of Victory, yet I was reluctant to place with the list, since it would not be fair to those on the list. Hour of Victory was a game that lacked everything.

Therefore, I am glad EA Games is giving this game a little more thought and touch up.

actually, i was disappointed to hears this at first, but it actually will be good.

The delay will help me recover from buying a 360, Halo 3 and a high def tv.

that set me back about $1300. And i still am forking out $120 for both Mass Effect and Assasin's Creed. But Army of two will be sweet! Polish that game up!

there are 2 arguments with this:

    1. it sucks balls that we have 2 wait another 5 months for the game and

    2. their was a alot of hype for the game and now because of this the hype will die down and people will get interested in other games (maybe i'm wrong with argument 2)

but in response to both of those you could look at it this way:

    1. perhaps e.a. ARE actually attempting to make this game amazing, considering all their other flops (battlefield 2: modern combat) 2. perhaps the game really wasn't ready for shipmeant and Ea want this game to be perfect so that it can match up with games like Gears of war, Halo 3, super mario galaxy (wii's best game other than zelda), ps3's resistance fall of man, and not to mention two games which are coming out this month (assassins creed, mass effect) which are sure not going to be flops at all...

    3. also look at it this way:

can you imagin if the game come out on its originally stated date (november 15th i think it was) and the game is a flop, wouldn't you rather waitin 5 more months instead of gettin a **** game which people will get mad at and say "wow this game needed alot more time to make" or "completely incomplete"??? ask yourself this: "do you have the patience to wait 5 more months?, considering those 5 months will go pretty fast because of games like: assassins creed, mass effect and halo 3's online playabilty?" i end my argument saying that its good that they extended it by 5 months, keepin in mind that the game may still suck even after the extra 5 months they took to make it, hopefully that doesn't happen and the game is good

    thank you:

    "goodnight and good luck"

I believe its just a stragedy to sell the game more effiectiently to maybe compete with the Wii or the ps3. Its just my opinion. They delayed so many like chkpost wrote below. And all schelduled in Feburary thru April.

EA follow suit with Rockstar delaying the game so they can have a dual format release (yet again waiting for the PS£hite), the 360 version is ready! just release the damn thing you money grabbing &%$^&^%££&$%$"$£££"

this sucks, like if they delayed it a week or 2, ok, but 5 months!!! this is ridiculous!!!! it's so bull****

    Posted Nov 1, 2007 1:06 pm PT

It's disappointing to hear it is being delayed but to tell the truth it looked like it needed polish from the game vids. The weapons sounds seemed wrong and the up close melee seemed poor. If they fix that it just may live up to the hype.

JESUS! enough with the delays, developers need to start keeping their mouths shut on release dsates until they know for a fact it can be released on the date they give out, especially for a game as big as this, not only do they screw themselves over by killing the hype they piss off gamers to the point where they dont wanna buy the game anymore!!

"gunnerkidd I think if you have a deadline you should meet it no matter what. I am a S.W.A.T. sniper and if I miss a deadline someone could get hurt. People are pushing back games like it is no big deal but they should just release the date when their ready not when the press have given them too much pressure. In my point of view release dates have no meaning anymore they are just too fragile in the video game industry. "

ok, im done after this one. "I am a S.W.A.T. sniper and if I miss a deadline someone could get hurt." awwwwwwww, SNAP!!!! lol. that's the best line i have ever read on this site. good stuff. "DAMN! Johnson took two in the head because our sniper missed his deadline!!!!" that's awesome. release date = a combo of quasi-realistic code release date + what would make that company's earnings look best that quarter. something like that. it could be pushed back b/c of bugs or it could be pushed back b/c the publisher thinks the game will sell better the next quarter. welcome to the real world, kids! just don't make the sniper late, k? THANKS!!!

"Crusade_17 man....i can remeber reading bout this game in 05....i was stoked and wanting to play it.......kept waitin and waitin and now me and bro hav to wait even longer......SIGH......."

that was only last year. we sometimes hear about games years in advance. anywooooo, it's funny to read negative comments from kiddies about games being pushed back... b/c you want a $60+tax DVD of bugs? do you not care about that b/c mom and dad are paying for the game? c'mon, folks, there are only a freaking truckload of good games this year out already and that many more to come. ok, a few were pushed back. sweet! that's a good thing.

I am getting really tired of all this pushing back. I swear every game nowadays is getting pushed back. It isn't so bad when they give us a little heads up that they are doing it but this game was coming out in a couple weeks. I went out and reserved it and paid it off but screw that now i am moving it over to call of duty or assassins creed. I am really getting tired of all this crap
