Battlestar Galactica blasts 360, PC next week

Space-combat shooter based on popular Sci-Fi Channel interstellar opera landing on XBL on October 24, PCs a day earlier.

October is shaping up to be a busy month for Australian developer Auran. Earlier this week, the studio launched its action-focused massively multiplayer online game Fury. Today, Sierra Online revealed that the developer's other principal product, TV-series-inspired Battlestar Galactica, will hit the jet stream for PCs on October 23 and be a part of Microsoft's weekly Xbox Live Wednesday update on October 24.

Battlestar Galactica fans eager for a refresher before the new season launches on the Sci-Fi Channel will be pleased to know the game includes 10 single-player missions based on popular episodes from the TV series. The flight-combat shooter also features multiplayer domination, deathmatch, and team deathmatch modes, accommodating eight players in the XBL game and 16 pilots in the PC version. Gamers can align themselves with either the human or Cylon factions and have a selection of four ships from each contingent.

Xbox 360 owners can pick up Battlestar Galactica for 800 Microsoft points ($10) through the Xbox Live Marketplace. The PC version will be offered both as a digital download and via retail for $19.99. It is rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

OMG today? In europe as well? I hope this will be good because BSG is the best show since Babylon 5.

Meh, well everyone's entitled to their opinion, I suppose. Dexter is pretty good...at least it's an original idea. Firefly is ok, but the writing and (especially) the acting is really pretty weak in a lot of areas. Joss Whedon seems to directly target 14-year old girls with his shows (or boys in the case of Firefly). Boston Legal has its good episodes, but to me it's an only slightly above-average primetime drama. C*cksucker Deadwood c*cksucker is c*cksucker pretty c*cksucker good. C*cksucker. Babylon 5 is awesome.......if you don't mind the cheesy aliens, completely 2-dimensional characters with entirely unrealistic personalities and relationships, and re-hash of themes already covered in (sometimes more than one) Star Trek series. I do like Six Feet Under. There are some writers that understand characters. It's funny that as soon as writers introduce real personalities to the characters on a sci-fi show people start screaming "soap opera!" IMO if you love Babylon 5 and you think BSG is a "soap opera" you're probably not mature enough to handle a "grown-up" drama. Yes, if people were cooped up on a ship together for long enough there would be some relationship issues and....*gasp*......sexual relations!

I admit, however, that BSG had some shakey episodes last season. It's not cancelled, though. The producers are smart enough to know that by the nature of the premise it can't go on forever. Next season is the last on purpose.

And yes, everyone knows that Starbuck is a cylon.

Sorry but shows like Dexter, Firefly, Boston Legal, Deadwood...those are excellent TV.

BSG is good but really last season stank and if not for them announcing it was cancled and this would be the final season I would have quit watching.

    Starbuck is a Cylon.

BSG is the best show on the TV right now. Only The X-Files and Six Feet Under can top it imo. I've seen the original , and I think it's blasphemy to even compare it with the masterpiece Ronald D. Moore reinvented . Get over it , Baltar is a slave to Number Six , and Starbuck is a lady . You are missing a show that sets the standards for future TV . Only in Blade Runner have I met such philosophical questions.
I'm buying the game , whatever it will be. RONALD D. MOORE YOU 'RE A GOD !

    @Vulpis - Babylon 5's a big pile of sh1t

SG-1, now that's a real show. Never been impressed with the soap-like new BG though. Starbuck's a girl? Get a grip!

I would only play a Battlestar Galactica game if it was the real Battlestar Galactica, not that horrid Sci-Fi Channel show that has the nerve to call itself Battlestar Galactica

Vulpis, congratulations. You are the troll of the week. There's a reason BG gets high marks from fans and critics alike. Way to go though. You're different!

Hmmm. A lousy game to go with a lousy show--I wonder if the game will include sex scenes between the pilots between missions.

Meanwhile, to iol5--I don't know about wytefang, but to me 'quality sci-fi' means a little show called 'Babylon 5'. (Mind you, the spin-offs aren't very good--the Lost Tales seem to be *badly* low-budget). Sci-Fi's channel's so-called 'Battlestar Galactica' comes off as some really badly-written fanfic. Hmmm. Wonder if the show's creator is Mary Sue-ing as Baltar or something? (I mean, betray the human race just so he can get *laid* with an android? Come on. Give me John Colicos any day! )

I'm guessing this game isn't going to be very good. All signs point to "don't waste your time".

The show, however, is actually pretty damn good. I was surprised too, but everyone I've forced to watch it (even the hardcore skeptics) has been hooked after watching the pilot mini-series. One of the very, very few well-written science fiction TV shows in the past 10-15 years or so. I guess that's why it's on so many "must see" and "best show" lists, including those of mags like Rolling Stone and Time.

@wytefang: I'd hate to hear what TV you actually think is good. MTV? Teletubbies, anyone?

Michael: Ohh. Dwight. Oh, Dwight, my loyal compadre. You and I are hanging tonight. The two of us. We are celebrating our freedom and our manhood. You know what? Why don't we watch that show you've been wanting to watch? That stupid Battleship Galaxy-

    Dwight: Battlestar Galactica?

Michael: That. Whatever stupid show you want to watch, we're watching it.

@lamprey: The Homeworld series is not space combat, it's 3D real-time strategy.

Wing Commander, TIE Fighter, FreeSpace 2--THOSE are space combat games. Actually, space sims, to be more accurate.
