PS3 has 178 percent UK sales surge

The launch of the new 40GB model and 60GB price drop sees sales of the console nearly triple.

On October 10, the 40GB PlayStation 3 went on sale in the UK, along with a new Value Pack for the 60GB machine, which includes two first-party games, and costs £349 (approx $710)--a £76 ($155) drop.

Sony's holiday push seems to be working. For the week ending October 13, there was a 178 percent increase in sales of the console over the previous week, according to Chart Track, the official UK game industry sales tracking body.

The week was the third biggest week for PlayStation 3 hardware since it was launched in the UK on March 23--the first and second being the two weeks after it was launched. However, the figures weren't enough to get the PS3 the top slot--the DS Lite sold the most number of units, followed by the Wii, then the PS3, and then the Xbox 360.

Chart Track director Dorian Bloch commented, "The PS3 60GB is proving very popular, even with the introduction last week of the 40GB model. Eighty-nine percent of purchasers opted for some form of 60GB model, since this is sold with at least two games for only £50 ($102) more than the 40GB model, and sometimes other extras...check some retailer Web sites and you'll find Blu-ray discs also included for £350."

    What ur forgetting is that developers could bang out PS2 games due to the overall simplicity of last gen games.

    Now is a different story, players have a higher expectation in the quality of the product. Fine detailed HD Graphics (e.g. pattens on fabric), Epic Plotlines etc etc.

    It's not as simple as making a textured 3d environment anymore and this will slow down the delivery of any game on any platform.

    You should be asking urself why PS3 developers are chucking out games already on the 360 instead of investing time on the finer detailed super duper new games that they are capable of.

    What you people are forgetting is that the PS2 had a slow start with games & look how well that did. Did X Box 360 have a load of games when it came out NO!! Wait till November and the games will be flying out and a load of PS3 Top exclusives as well Haze, Uncharted, UT3, MGS4, GT5 what you people are forgetting is that obviously Xbox 360 has more games out if PS3 did have more games out i would be very suprised as it is only out 7 months. so all i can say is wait till end of 08 and then we shall see who has the exclisives the only reason xbox are getting games now is that the developers want to make money off their games so they are going to go multiplatform for now so my advice would be get a PS3 because i've had it since launch and i have played it everyday so far and the games are very good, and you don't have to pay to go online EVERY year losers

    The price drop is great news and makes buying a PS3 a real option now especially as it has blue ray and the other hardware options built in. But would I recommend the PS3 for anyone to buy? The answer still has to be NO...... It just ain't worth it if your a gamer as it has so few games. Every game that comes out is on the 360 1st and thats if they are coming out on the PS3. For gaming there is currently only one console and that's the 360.

    Well thats the problem Kratos, these days war is all about speed, as soon as the ps3 catches up, microsoft and nintendo will be working on their new consoles, while a dying sony will be clinging on to a dying console...much like how they're still clinging on to the ps2, whereas microsoft and nintendo have cut the cord on their previous consoles and are focused on their present ones...to be honest it sounds like you are new to this industry.

And yes i own a 360 and I do own a Wii, I bought the wii well before i ever bought the 360. I never was excited for a console before until i saw the wii. I own the ps1, dreamcast, gamecube, xbox, 360 a gaming PC and the wii. Despite your belief that i'm a geeky pc gamer so be it. I'm just a diehard gamer who enjoys gaming. Sorry the PS3 just doesn't cut it to me yet. My fav games ever are zelda(s), quake series, doom series, system shock 2, half life series, mario 2, shenmu, metal gear solid 1 for the ps1 (haven't liked the others).     Think we'll hear a lot more about 360's exclusives for 2008 in 2008, unlike other consoles the 360 actually has some games coming out in 2007 to promote for the holidays as opposed to hyping games that are due to come out in early 2008... unless they get delayed again, and again...

    @ carljohnson3456: I do admire there attempt to make it outdoors more and give the game more colour (the grey scenery does get boring in the 30th game) but other than that I think it's not so good. Resident evil 4 seems more action packed and the game mechanics seem less intrusive too (no arrows showing where grenades will fall). I think it will be good none the less and if it's what your looking forward to then I doubt it will dissapoint.

    I wish MS would announce more exclusives for 08, PS3 has tons coming out.

    @Sigil-otaku: Uncharted just looks so action packed, looks like a movie. It's not just a "mud" colored game though - the scenery really looks like a vivid, colorful, live jungle. The action looks great and the trailer really got my excited, lol. But then again, I've been waiting for this game since it was known as the "Naughty Dog Project", lol.

    @Maxdriva: Uhhh I didnt say I wasnt still waiting, I said the "2008 the wait is over". The PS3 does have a handful of games out, and if you want to be immature and say "All the fanboys will then be saying wait until 2009" you can. I'm simply stating that 2008 will be the year the PS3 has been waiting on. It almost seems like the PS3 launched a year too early. But whatever friend, you seem irrational so I wont waste any more text. N64 textures on the PS3? Yuuup - irrational fanboy, for sure.

    @carljohnson3456: Can you please tell me what appeals about Uncharted? Nothing against it but it doesn't stand out at all in my opinion so why do you like it so much?

    @Hvac0210: Funny how you like to blame MS for Sony and Nintendo having a poor lineup. MS didn't force them into the game, it did come out 1 year earlier but guess what didn't ? It's the PS3 and the Wii, so they never got pulled in by MS. The 360 is unreliable I admit, mine got the RROD for a motherboard failure but that could have probably happened anyway if they released it later as it is more bad management than bad parts.

    No the games that are being released in 2008 wouldn't have been launch games even if they did have more time to wait, the developers need time to get used to the system to make better games and they wouldn't have got final dev kits till later on then too so it wouldn't have changed anything. Most analysts have predicted that but the also predicted the Wii would be a failure.

    MS has a better and bigger lineup of games with more exclusives so I believe they do have something to appeal as a trump card. Not to mention a better online service. PS3 does seem to have more good games comeing out eventually though but NG2, Lost odyssey, Halo3, Bioshock, Gears of war, Blue dragon, DOA4 and more mean the 360 has a good lineup.

    Uhhh, I own both an Xbox 360 and PS3, and I can tell you my console of choice is the PS3. I can see how you say it makes you angry when you look at it - the PS3 is just now getting a good line up. If I had bought the PS3 at launch and been waiting all this time for some good titles I'd be angry too. But, now I'm playing Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Resistance (still) and Oblivion. And I look forward to Uncharted Drake's Fortune more than any other game on any other platform. The PS3 has a great line up coming, and yes - "just wait" is getting old. 2008 the wait is over and the PS3 finally really launches.

    Thanks for the figures chaosXeno. I'm surprised it only sold 30,000 more but it's only been one week and christmas is a coming up. This is very positive for Sony as christmas will get them even more sales and they will probably sell every 60gb model there is but I personally hope the 40gb does bad and prompts them to release and 80gb with BC. I've got enough money for one now but I need to buy christmas presents so I'll be waiting till I get them, I bet I can pick one up after christmas anyway so I'll try then.

    Hold on. Didn't Japan just release numbers about this? The Wii certainly has been big in Japan for as long as it has been available for purchase, being passed a month back for about 3 weeks before the Wii took the top again. So it's not just the US.

The UK is a completely different market and it is not talked about often, so many people aren't familiar with the demographics and sales of PS3s, or even how many "gamers" there are in the UK.

    This is good news for Sony and is really no surprise. After the 60GB price was dropped to $499, there was a huge surge of sales as well. Unfortunately that only lasted a couple of weeks before Sony's PS3 sales dropped back down to 25-30K a week. How long will this surge last? What will happen with Microsoft FREE 2 game (Forza 2 & Marvel:UA) bundle deal is released at the end of the month? Can Sony's PS3 sell at a high rate throughout the holidays? Only time will tell. Also, the XBox 360 has been steadily beating the PS3 is sales for the last 3 weeks in Europe by as much as 25K-35K. I expect the PS3 will leap past the XBox 360 due to the price drop. We'll review the sales again in about 3-4 weeks after that.

    Maxdriva. You see, I'm the other side of that coin. I have all three systems, the Wii gathers dust, the 360 has been replaced 3 times and the PS3 has been solid. The titles that I've been buying for the PS3 lately (Ghost Recon, The darkness) are available on the 360, but my 360 has always been unreliable. Were it not for Bioshock and Halo 3, I probably wouldn't have played it at all this year. And as a blu-ray player it's the star of my home theater. I just picked up the PSM's PS3 holiday guide and I have to say, I'm pretty stoked about what's coming out this winter, but I'm not saying "just wait till this comes out." There's more than enough out now to make the PS3 my fav. Perhaps you're not using yours right.

    What sort of numbers are we talking about here? I mean if only 20 bought it to begin with, then 178% increase isn't that big, because that's only like 50something people. Show some numbers with this besides a percentage.

    I'm not speaking for anyone but imo people are saying that because MANY of them already own a PS2. If you want BC fork over an extra $100 for the 60gig(that is still available). Otherwise you get what you pay for buddy so quit your b****ing.

    Not a bad idea by Sony. Force all the ummers and arrers to go out and get a 60GB if BC is that big an issue for them, then let the less hardcore have a cheaper entry point. Exciting times for Sony.
