Double Fine recounts Brutal Legend

Tim Schafer's next game to star Jack Black and a stable of rock legends will be released for Xbox 360, PS3.

Back in August, Norwegian gaming site gamer.no reported on the next game from Double Fine Productions, the Tim Schafer-helmed studio responsible for the critically acclaimed and commercially ignored Psychonauts. That report was hastily taken down, but not before some key details could be gleaned and translated.

According to the site, the game was going to be called Brutal Legend and would star Tenacious D frontman and actor Jack Black as a rock band roadie who dies and must escape hell to reach rock heaven. At the time, Schafer said some of the rumors about the game were true, but a lot were false. The name was all but confirmed last month, when GameSpot discovered a trademark application for Brutal Legend (with a german umlaut over the U).

More details are emerging today, as Brtal Legend is the featured story in the next issue of Game Informer, the cover of which is now posted on its Web site. The cover image proclaims it to be "a rock 'n' roll road show through the twisted mind of Tim Schafer" and also specifies that the game features Jack Black as roadie Eddie Riggs.

The magazine is also reporting that the game will feature "a stable of heavy metal legends" in addition to Black and is being developed for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

I'm a big LucasArts adventure game fan, and I love metal. Tim Schafer working on a metal themed game? OHHHHH YEAHHHHH!

Finally! A game dedicated to the Metal/Rock scene. Guitar Hero doesn't really count. I am getting pretty damn tired of all the "urban" themed games that abound on the store shelves. Since Tim Schafer is behind this.... it can't fail. The man is a modern day conceptual genius. His name is up there with Kojima's (MGS) and Levine's (Bioshock) for truly original IP's.

And anybody feel free to hit me up with other original games I should be playing. Always looking for the next great/classic game that I'm missing out on.

Much better concept that Psychonauts. I am one of the many, many people that did not buy it. So don't shoot me. It may be a favortite of many, just not mine. I am sure there are plenty of games I like that others don't. Like I loved Brute Force, especially the co-op--it did not have split screen!

Tim Schafer's storytelling, I'm psyched about. Jack Black's acting, not so much. But the concept sounds awesome enough to give this one a fair try.

I'm so glad Schafer decided to not go for a wii version with "enhanced" controls. It also goes to show that innovation doesn't have to be all about the controls. Psychonauts was my favorite game of the last generation. The writing and fun powerups not to mention the great art style made for a beautiful game.

I know Tim Schafer will not fail his fans (me included), but unfortunately i also know this will definately not be a success commercially because these types of games do not sell well i guarantee it. And i don't know how long his studio can last while making loss.

Tim Schafer and Jack Black. Sounds like a winner to me!

Tim definitely has the right idea this time around...
he has JACK BLACK... one of the most popular icons in the entertainment business today...
this game will sell, if they put Jack Black's name on the cover...
and if Tim makes awesome games like he always does, then the game will be damn good as well...
and after this game becomes a major hit, all Tim has to do on his next game is put "from the creators of Brütal Legend" and that game will sell as well...
Psyconauts was an amazing game, and is still in my collection... i'll definitely go ahead and pick this up for 360 when it comes out...
