Sega gone fishin' on Wii

Publisher reels in Cavia-developed Sega Bass Fishing on Nintendo's console for early 2008 release.

There are plenty of fish in the sea when it comes to Wii angling games, but so far gamers have been better off practicing a bit of catch-and-release with an assortment of sickly specimens. Sega is hoping to change that with the first console installment of its Bass Fishing series in more than five years.

Sega announced today that the series will make its return with Sega Bass Fishing on the Wii, and the game has been confirmed for a North American and European release. Developed by Cavia (the Drakengard series; BeatDown: Fists of Vengeance), Sega Bass Fishing will include four types of freshwater bass, more than 20 lures, 15 lakes, and a variety of play modes, including arcade play and "nature trip."

Sega Bass Fishing is set for release in early 2008.

I actually liked the original Sega Bass Fishing but I stuck with Fishermans Bait and its sequels(2 players at once, super sized fish, and a way bigger gloat factor). But since Fishermans Bait wasn't on the Dreamcast, Sega Bass Fishing was the game of choice. Besides I liked goofing off with the fishing controller. Looks like the Wii version will allow some goofing off with controls all its own.

I really enjoyed the original Sega Bass Fishing, and the Sega Marine Fishing follow-up as well. I'm hoping that they expand the game quite a bit with more areas to fish in, more competition to fish against via NPCs and such...generally more length to the game. A nice competitive two player mode would be excellent as well. The biggest thing I'm wondering about, however, is if they will improve the graphics from what they were originally.

Yes.. i have been waiting for this. Sega is the king of fishing games. There original fishing games has been copied many times, but no one has delivered a decent experience. I am still playing my Dreamcast version once a while, and its still a blast. But since the Wii came out, i was hoping they would release it on Nintendos new platform. It would be a perfect fit. And to all of you who haven't played any of Segas fishing games, you don't know what its about anyway. Stop talking trash, and give it a try when it comes out. Or take a look at this old Dreamcast review from Gamespot:

It always annoyed me that only Bass fishing games exist. As a kid I didn't even know what a bass was, nor have I ever seen one even. Though at the most, I'd only rent this anyway.

Thats a good start. Now I want Sega marine fishing. The Dreamcast one is great since you could unlock items, and fish for your fish tank. Basically you could turn your t.v. into a fish tank, and it was awesome. Hoood chaaat.

@Erinaceus1991: I agree. Sega has been on the rise. Sonic and the Secret Rings was a hit for the Wii and Mario and Sonic at the Olympics has been getting a lot of hype and hopefully will be a good game as well. From what I've seen so far it seems to be shaping up nicely. The return of Bass Fishing will be great if it's controls are done correctly.

I always thought that that Bass Fishing would be a good fit for the Wii. Sega is doing something right for once.

    xcollector,

Ever go fishing in Twilight Princess? The nunchuk functioned as a reel. Can be done here as well I suppose.

I have Sega Bass fishing for the Dreamcast with a motion sensing Fishing Rod that has a reel. I doubt the Wii version will look a lot more better graphically then the Dreamcast Version and the lack of a reel on the wii mote will decrease the fun factor. For that reason I really don't care for the wii version. It will still probably be one of the better wii fishing games out though.

Y'know, I have NO idea how a good fishing game hasn't been released on Wii yet. And it looks like we'll still have to wait.

Generic_Dude's Fishing Game Instructions: Tilt remote to mouth to drink beer. Shake vigorously to hide beer from Fish and Wildlife. Cast, and wait. You'll never catch any fish, but you won't catch the wife nagging in your ear either.

Brain Age/Big Brain Academy - defies the rules of what constitutes "gaming". People get married in MMORPGs. You raise livestock and grow crops in Harvest Moon. In Japan, a very popular genre is horse simulator in which you raise a horse, choose its diet, and watch it grow to (hopefully) become a good race horse. Phoenix Wright, Trauma Center, you are attempting to do real-world career work. Where have you been? Did you fall into a coma in 1995 and just woke up today? Video games have evolved far beyond run, jump, jump, shoot, kill the boss, beat the game. I shouldn't even have to tell you this. YOU ARE A MEMBER OF GAMESPOT FOR GOD'S SAKE! YOU ARE AS NERDY, IF NOT MORE NERDY, THAN THE REST OF US.

Thats truly being selfish...Not all people can fish, or for watever reason, dont have the time to and what better way to spend some minutes than on a virtual game to have a little fun...Just b/c you didnt think it was a good idea, doesnt mean that....drum roll.......Sega themselves or people themselves will not enjoy it for a way to get away from it all.
