60GB PS3 to be discontinued in UK

[UPDATE] Following last week's announcement that the 60GB would be getting a price cut, Sony states the deal has a limited shelf life.

At the end of last Friday, Sony finally gave British gamers what they really, really want for Christmas--a price cut for the PlayStation 3. Originally priced at £425 in the region on its launch on March 23, the console had remained at that price since then, despite price cuts in Japan and North America.

The new Value Pack, which will go on sale on October 10, will feature two first-party games, plus a "fully functioning" 60GB PlayStation 3 for £349. Alongside the price drop news, Sony also announced the introduction of a 40GB SKU, which would go on sale alongside the 60GB version for £299, giving consumers a choice. The 40GB model would, however, not be backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 games.

For many, the extra £50 may have seemed worth it with two free games, 20GB more storage space, and full backwards compatibility. For others, the cheaper price point of the 40GB version may have made it more enticing--especially if they didn't fancy any of Sony's first-party titles currently on offer.

However, consumers will soon not have a choice, as the 60GB version is being phased out of Europe completely. According to Sony's Web site, the Value Pack will remain on sale only "while stocks last." From then on, "once stocks are exhausted, the new 40GB model will be the only one available in SCEE territories."

[UPDATE] A Sony spokesperson confirmed to GameSpot that the 60GB model would only be remaining on sale while stocks last. He said, "Our offering in the UK marketplace for Christmas are the two SKUs announced on Friday, but as the 60GB stock is depleted, the £299 40GB SKU will be the only version available going forward. The 40GB machine represents all the power and potential of PlayStation 3 at a very compelling price...The only functionality that is being removed is backwards compatibility--and this is because we believe this less important now than when we launched--as there will be 65 PS3 games available by Christmas."

I was looking to get a PS3 for myself at Christmas, but for now I'll just keep hold of my PS2 and xbox360. I think if people look at the facts the Elite is cheaper and comes (in most stores) as a better package and has a larger range of games. Have Microsoft got it right and Sony got it so wrong?
Is this a sign from Sony that they're going the same way as SEGA and the Dreamcast? Come on Sony pull your finger out and stop ripping us off, give us a full spec PS3 with BC and a package thats worth the money and I would consider getting one.

jackass17 that means you would have to have the entire game saved on to the HDD that may be alright for ps1 games, but PS2 games would take up around 2-4GB each. and if you want a large collection of them that will take up alot of space.

well the best move sony could make for themselves in mind would be to put ps2/ps1 games up on PSN for a decent price- no real need for backwards compatibility i dont think

The rediculous price was why I didnt buy a PS3. I was going to wait until they were cheaper. Now I'm not going to buy one at all, because of this crap. I wanted the best model of PS3 available when I did buy one, but now theyre getting rid of it. And dont give me that crap about "well if you wanted to play ps2 games buy a ps2". I dont want half a dozen consoles littering my house, its a pain in the arse having to put one console away and set another up every time I get the urge to play an older game, on a previous generation console.
And now I have vista on my new PC I cant get Sony's Connect program (that transfers songs to Sony's Walkman) to run on it, so I have to buy a new MP3 player if I want to put any new songs onto my MP3 player. Sony is a b*stard! GRRRR!

It is ridiculous, who is going to buy a 40GB PS3 with no BC and less features for the same price of a 360 Elite, which has more games and a HDD that is 3 times the size. Plus the cross platform games end up twice as good on the 360 as the PS3.

So is Sony ever going to keep one model on the shelf for more than three months and not turn a price cut into a stock clearance sale?

How Sony used to ridicule Microsoft for its software-only approach to backwards compatibility that didn't allow for all Xbox games to run on the Xbox 360. How the tables have turned. Some PS2 games could be made to run through software, but Sony hasn't been going down that path and it would probably be ages before such an emulator could be ready to be released. If Sony's even moving down that direction given their recent comments about it.

I wonder if part of the idea for Sony here is to push those who've been thinking about buying a PS3 but putting it off to decide if backwards compatibility is important to them. If it is, buy now, would be the message.

All conspiracy theories aside, it is probably no more complicated than Sony's getting its butt handed to it. Many developers have gone on record saying the price is too high, many more must be doing so in private. Sony can't take out PS3 functionality, so reducing extra USB ports and removing any hardware required for backwards compatibility are the only remaining options.

It's hard to believe this is the company that used to run ads about how they'd maintain backwards compatibility "Forever". While those ads did highlight the PS1 to be fair, it nonetheless does signal a massive change in attitude.

What the heck? Only 40GB, 2 USB ports, and no BC w/ PS2? I am going to take this to mean that the 80GB model will come to EU soon. The 40GB model is too stripped down to be the stand-alone SKU. Unless Sony is already admitting defeat in EU.

I really don't think this will make much difference to the PS3 market. Most PS3 owners have a PS2 so backwards compatibility won't be too much of an issue. Furthermore as others have pointed out, the upgrade-ability of the hard-drive means one can change their storage options at the drop of a hat. The only worry is that the price change still won't be enough for Sony to make ends meet. I for one am not interested in buying a PS3

The UK has almost always gotten the short end of the stick when it comes to consoles and games.

I cannot believe that stick just got even shorter.

They really shouldn't refer to it as a "price cut" and then have fact it's clearance price wormed out of them. Well, that's just Sony's way these days.

A bigger issue is you need a scorecard to keep track of what territory has what SKUs. It's weird their solution is to keep diversifing and changing out the selection. They could have saved their sales and production lines a lot of grief with straight out price reduction. And the best part, it's still in the face of the thin library that hasn't progressed all that much since their first decline in sales. All and all, I think this is more to push systems since the games able to do it for them aren't ready.

I am a bit confused, I think Sony are doing this on purpose! lol

So anyway, what is happening is that backward compatibility is going and you only have a limited time to buy a 60gb bk cmpt to which if you miss out you are left only the 40gb version without bk cmpt as an option???
Sorry, I just can't get my head around it all, seems really really messy.....

Sony are sticking to the moto you get what you pay for!

I`m really surprised at Sony , and at how the launch and beyond has been handled. Sony`s marketing had always been first class, it seemed they could do no wrong, and from the strengh of the brand brought from the ps1 and ps2 the ps3 launch should have been flawless, but so far it seems to be one mistake after another. As highligted in a previous post, the lack of outstanding games is unbelievable, surely anyone with even a little knowledge of consoles and their success understands that this can make or break their chances of survival. With a strong lineup of games the ps3`s privce point could maybe be justified but this just isnt the case. This latest package, is just sending more conflicting information to gamers and confusing maters even more .. Sony , get some outstanding games released, unify your prices and give us some good packages. I think that Sony went into the launch hoping that they would cruise through on the back of the success of their previous consoles, but it now looks like Microsoft and Nintendo have shown them how things should have been done. How the mighty have have fallen!

Seems like a great move to me - they remove the overly expensive action of loading the PS2 emulator on the HDD, so finally, EU gamers get what they asked for: a system only slightly cheaper than the 80 GB US model, but w/o BC, card reader and half the disk space. Well - I'd still buy it if they'd axe the BluRay drive and the HDMI port and put in a Pentium II, because it's a Sony. Nothing better than a giant, bulky black toaster sitting under my shelf to keep my TV from shaking...

I don't know about anyone else, but the reason I haven't bought a PS3 is not because of the price. It's because of the lack of great titles. Give me some great games and I'll pimp out my grandma no problem.

dont sony realise with anout 110 million ps2 owners out there they have just given them 1 less reason to buy a ps3 over a wii or xbox360
im glad i already have 1 there are still games comming out for the ps2 and its nice just to stick it in my ps3 rather than plug in my ps2
my second point is will they stop doing updates to the backward compatiability for 60gb ps3's
they should not be scraping it they should be making it awsome and advertising it
"have a ps2 thinking of geting a new machine get a ps3 not only will you get all our funky new games but all youre old games will look awsome on it youll want to play them all again"

"this is because we believe this less important now than when we launched" - with regards to BC

Er..... evidence that Sony do not listen to what their loyal servants say? No sale here, crippled system, still overexaggerated price (I couldn't care less about having a blu-ray player, if I wanted one I could get a £112 drive for my pc) oh, and no software yet that makes me consider it as a purchase. 65 "games" of yet more questionable quality will also not sell systems. Maybe this is why developers and publishers are getting cold feet.

It's like 2 people are bickering at SCEE and they keep releasing conflicting press releases! One minute its "All the features you need and want are in, it's worth the money." and then before you know it, you get "We are taking features out because you don't need or want them, and we are trying to make it as cheap as possible."

I wouldn't be at all supprised if after christmas, they scrap the 40gb model, put the emotion engine and a 180gb hdd in and start selling it for £500 and say "this is the only SKU we are now going to do.".

At the fear of sounding like a fanboy, Sony should look to Microsoft and see what an organised, sensible marketing struckture looks like. That, or they should just get their heads out of the clouds and start acting like the company they should be.

  • TehUndeadHorror

    Posted Oct 9, 2007 12:26 am GMT

@Sigil-otaku: But it really isn't overcharged when you see on the features on it... I agree it's expensive but definitely not overcharge as it has a Blu-Ray player on it and that alone cost more than the PS3 right now. I think the new 40GB model is a really really bad move for sony but I guess it would encourage gamers who've just entered the console... wars... thing (err not sure how to word that) to buy one as they don't have any PS2 games anyway.

  • PacoL250

Oh wow...the UK now just gets completely screwed.

First no BC in the 40 GB and now the only option that had BC is getting the axe.

And I quote: "The only functionality that is being removed is backwards compatibility--and this is because we believe this less important now than when we launched--as there will be 65 PS3 games available by Christmas."

Explain this to me Sony, what makes you think that people will want all 65 of those games? What guarantee is there that those 65 games will all be at least AA titles?

65 PS3 games over the more than 65 PS2 titles one would want to play...okay I'm not following their logic.

In trying to cut costs, they make boneheaded moves that kill them. They're doing exactly what Sega did in the hardware sector and it got them booted out. I don't see that happening, but this will hurt them still.

I guess my fellow gamers in the UK will have to buy a PS2 if they want to play Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal or God of War II. Guess Sony wins there cause that's more money from their PS2 since they're making money on the system now.

I guess it stinks to a consumer sometimes. This stinks for us, but I guess in the end, it works for Sony's bottom line.

    Oh well...

@metzenlord: The console wars is mostly just people trying to justify there purchase and when there is derogattory remarks made about your favourite console it's always fun to pull a few punches back to show them they're not perfect either. RROD happened to my 360 too (Just got it back and am so happy with it) but if I had a PS3 that'd be collecting dust. Just by your comment of saying the 360 is dead (by RROD) and that you leave it kind of shows your preferance. Your last commens definitely just show you as a slightly biased microsoft hater. More games on a games console is good, and the fact that there are also more and generally better (based on reviews and my own opinion) exclusives the 360 is in a great position at the moment. @limp89: I guess it sort of was but with the 60gb being the only Sku in Europe till now it seemed as if they were just stopping production of the 60gb's for America. Guess they're cheaping out everywhere though.

I don't think it is even possible to change models anymore than Sony has already. Sony should just stick with this one 40 gig one and thats it. So many of their statements have been contradicted by this that it is starting to get very embarrassing for them as a company.

Can't believe there's so many ppl complaining, ppl that doesn't even have the thing, I bought my PS3 3 weeks ago, just plain good gaming, polished stuff compared to Xbox 360. My xbox 360 is sitting under a desk bc of the 3 RED LIGTHS....

Whats the deal with the Console WARS....there is hardly any war around consoles....Wii is selling more than sony and microsoft together, but the Xbox 360 is 2005 hardware...guess why it has more games than PS3 genius.....

Last time xbox was better in graphics than nintendo or sony, this time is not but has more games?....more games don't mean anything, we will see the same story over and over again, any doubts that sony is better than microsoft? just open the consoles, and see for yourself, the wii, thats also good planning, at the end is Japan vs. USA....you know who is winning....

65 ps3 available, but will they all be good? Thats a guarantee they can't make, no one can.
Sony really needs to stop making new models. Wii has stuck with its one model (supposed to be a new one with a DVD drive in it sometime soon). 360 has the Elite, but it's been out more than a year (almost 2). Cut the crap Sony, do something right.

Sony is a seriously dumb company in my opinion, don't they know fans are going to respond to this negatively? I was considering getting one but this is just like the way they forced the emotion eninge out of the American products and then put a positive spin on it. Europe lost the emotion engine first so will America be getting a no PS2 backwards compatible PS3 soon? Sony sucks if there consoles just keep getting worse and worse (I wonder if they'll end up making an ultimate PS3 or just keep stripping away at it), the EU territories are treat bad to say this is meant to be a celebration of the first christmas we have with the PS3. We lost the EE from the start, have only had one SKU for ages and now that they introduce another they say the first (AND BEST SKU) is being phased out for there cheaper one that they will hope sells better, they delayed our launch despite promising a world wide launch and they over charge us. I don't know why Sony fans don't complain at all, they just encourage Sony by saying 'smart move' all the time. It's a smart idea to make a cheaper PS3 but not to get rid of the other SKU's and the backwards compatibility. Can't wait till the 10 year plan is done and they've stripped the console down to the chasis only, PS3 with no compatibility with blue ray, games or anything of the sort but now only £5

hey micropanic, i've had my ps2 since launch date and it still hasn't broken till this day, are you sure you took care of those consoles, the xbox is a tank just like the n64 so if you were a bit careless with it it wouldn't break, but the ps2 is more delicate. I seriously don't get what sony is doing with all these ps3 models popping up across the world.

I can't believe the past year or so. I remember waiting in line for my preorder for my playstation 2 in 2000 certain my purchase £300+ purchase a few months later at launch was gonna be worth every penny and loads of great games and a console that never broke was my reward. Back then everything Sony did turned to Gold off the back of the PSone. Now i've held off buying a PS3 as my fanboyism toned down and i'm glad. I brought an XBOX last christmas which was a brave step for me but a smart choice. Still up for the PS3 but not until Sony start firing some people and sorting out what the heck is going on. Hopefully, a stop to this SKU nonsense, MGS4, FFXIII and a few exclusive gems under their belts and we can finally see what this machine is capable of.

Microsoft, not a much better company, have got far far far more out of an arguably weaker console with so many great games that have given me a hell of a lot of enjoyment. I brought one because I knew their future was secure with many many great titles, we'll have to wait to see if that's the case with the PS3.

Sony has screwed me over so many times, I wonder why I even bother CONSIDERING getting a Playstation 3.
When the Playstation 1 came out, I bought it and that played for quite a while... I believe it buggered up just as the Playstation 2 was being released, what happened was that the ball bearings around the circular bit that spins the disc came loose and flew off, and that stopped the thing from reading the disc. Ok I said, it happens and besides the PS2 is coming out which means new games, AND backwards compatibility so I'm fine with it... ohhh how wrong I was. Upon buying a PS2, a couple of days after the warranty expired, the sod broke, and once again I said OK, nevermind these things happen, I'll give Sony a break and buy a new one... guess what happened? A couple of days after the warranty ended, it broke. Right, I said, this is getting ridiculous, I took the console down to a Sony shop for repair, and they told me that the price for it's repair is MORE then a new PS2 console itself!!
During this time the PS2 Slim versions were coming out which I heard were more reliable, so as the prat that I am, I bought one... guess-bloody-what... IT BROKE A FEW DAYS AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRED.
Now, as you might expect, I'm very annoyed ESPECIALLY since during all of this the Xbox, I bought on DAY ONE of it's release never broke and still hasn't!
...I wish companies such as Squaresoft didn't put some of their games as Playstation exclusives. (Reference to Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid, of course.)

If they can change their ideologies and standards so fast - then I doubt that even this 40gb version will last.

Its all to do with selling out cheap hardware for the christmas period.

Notice that they are phasing out the software emulated emotion engine stuff for ps2. I reckon that once sony's sales are back on track (or, ON track) they will put in the Emotion Engine -- Like the rest of the world has. (can't be too hard).

Its probably costing them a bucket load in the EU with all the different tax laws, and especially the UK's conversions and taxes.
When Sony have made their money on bluray royalties and things over christmas, they can then gamble on the emotion engine.

Thats what I think will happen anyways - because you can guarantee that Gamespot will ask a Sony rep about removing the BC from the ps2, the rep will probably say "its complicated to put inside a PAL system, and we don't want anything less than perfect from our customers"... you know - some crap like that.

And then they will just put it back in come spring-time, along with the packed-in dual shock 3 pads.

They changed their tune about everything the ps3 stands for in just 10 months - from rumble being last generation to backwards compatibility being a sure way forward.

They have changed their minds so quickly, and from such strong standards aswell as PR presentations and reps confirming those comments - It is not unlike them to put the emotion engine back in next year sometime.

Its all down to getting sales over christmas, that way Sony won't get devs worried about lower userbase. And they can benefit from selling bluray discs and getting royalties.
Notice that bluray is still standard on the console, they just took two of the biggest games libraries in history away from the console (ps1 and ps2 games).

Its such a stupid and pointless removal of a great feature - like the sixaxis with no rumble..
But now the pads are going to have rumble!

And next year when you buy your cheap ps3, you will realise that you will be shafted royally by sony not keeping to their decisions. The 60gb is being discontinued for a reason - to phase out the software updated emotion engine emulation.
And when they do put the emotion engine inside the EU ps3's = all the ps3's you buy now will be obsolete - just like the sixaxis pads.

Sorry guys, just annoyed about this. Because even though its a bargain - its the equivalent of a Tesco Value item. In the Uk, Tesco Value are the products (food) in store that are the same kind of thing, but just alot cheaper and a bit nastier.

"just wait until you can get the steak" is all you should need to remember. Because I reckon by the time MGS4 comes out, we will be seeing the pads, the games and the console we were MEANT to see on launch day.

This is just the aftermath of financial difficulties and delays and technical errors. Sony will eventually get things going right, but be sure not to get one at christmas (unless you could care less!).

Because not only will the ps3 you get be obsolete, the pads will be obsolete aswell.
And by the time spring comes around, you will probably see a feature-packed ps3 - the proper one.

But, unfortunately, for Sony to do this - they need to make money. And that is to shift the unwanted sixaxis pads (that they are phasing out), to sell out the cheap left-over hardware.
Come spring-time they will probably release everything in one go - the games, the proper pads and the real-deal console.

Just make sure they don't do it off of your hard-earned cash!

Im just going to wait and see what happens, don't want no half-baked ps3 for christmas which will probably be phased out by summer.

i have all 3 consoles and atm im playing the 360 more just because of xbox live. but im keeping my ps3 as my main console, its a shame they had a hiicup straight away but theyre getting over it. they will release the 80gb version here next year for the same price as the 60gb one. BC is unimportant now really. It was deffinitely needed on ps2 but ps2 games are gone and dusted for me now. And how many people play origional xbox games on the 360... wii needs bc coz it has a much poorer lineup of games than the other consoles but i could count good gc games on 1 hand. Its all about NEW games... when they finally arrive.

P.S. Sony are lucky I'm sticking up with them however for how theyve treated EU.

So many different versions its now getting silly. Sony have messed up pS3 in a way i never thought possible. What a stupid move. this isnt a price cut, its a hardware cut which makes ps3 pointless, playstation is a brand name, i would make every sony console backward compatible as it makes sence and makes ps2 owners know they can play any playstaion game and it will work. I,m just so bored and fed up with PS3 that i now see it as a dead console.

    We need games that's what.
When we have the games the machine will sell, when the machine sells they can afford to have price cuts.
It's really sad to see companies do a straight port of games, instead of trying to tap more power from it.
And even when they do that the conversion turns out to be crappier compared to other consoles.
Seriously PS3 is a really nice piece of hardware, sure not everyone wants the features it offers, but that's how it comes. Wait and see next year when there's a more stable line-up of games.
People won't be **** then, it would be nice though if they treated all continents equally.

GODDAMNIT SONY!!! Stick with one SKU! ONE! UNO! It's not a hard concept! People will buy the console once they see there won't be changes in the future.

This isn't as bad as people are making it ... stop crying. You ppl take a sliver and call it a mortal wound. The 60g in Europe will be pointless soon. They don't have the EE chip over there, so the only thing lost is the middle skew. We all know Sony will release the 80g, which is the exact same thing as the 60g, with +20gs. I bet that it will take the same price point as the 60g as well. So if that is the case (and most likely is) the high end model is getting better, but there is still a cheaper model chose from.

    So why all the Crying!?

P.S. It hasn't even been out a year, so stop the "no games" bashing. You forget that it took Xbox360 a year to release a good game.

Europe has been plagued with Backwards compatibility anyway. It is good that it still will have a card reader though.

This is a bad bad step by Sony! Initially BC was 1 of there main selling points the fact that the PS3 would even upgrade the quality (only slightly) of some PS2 titles was seen all around as a good step. Now EU gamers are getting a big slap and are being treated like idiots. How dare Sony think they can just go around removing stuff and giving gamers a raw deal there treating us like dirt. To be honest it really seems like Sony just do not care about the EU anymore and are just concentrating about smashing 360 in Asia and trying to break America (as to be honest looks like 360 is winning there right now. Yes the EU may be 3rd in the list of important gaming regions but by god we sure make the figures look good (As I remember it in the last console wars it was sales of the PS2 in the EU that helped it beat the Xbox)

EU gamers will not stand for this anymore! I can really see Sony losing a lot of fans because of the whole mess up with the PS3. I loved my PS2 and did gain some respect for Sony but now I you would have to pay me to own a PS3. Im buying my Wii (when there finally back in stock but thats a different rant :p ) and a 360 next year when I can afford 1. Yes Microsoft went a bit wrong with the launch but they offer 2 very good packages and good prices. If you look hard enough you can pick up a core pack for the price of a Wii these days. Sure It aint have HDMI or a blu ray player (which is already outdated with the new tech coming 2-3 years time) but at least they have not messed the EU around as badly as Sony have.
