Tabula Rasa launch postponed

NCsoft's sci-fi MMOG from famed designer Richard Garriott delayed two weeks to November 2.

It was too good to be true for Richard Garriott's faithful, all of whom are eager to end the six-year-plus tease that has been Tabula Rasa. Despite announcing that the massively multiplayer online sci-fi epic had gone gold early last month, producer Starr Long has posted to the game's Web site that Tabula Rasa will remain a blank slate until November 2, with preorders gaining access on October 30.

Explaining the reason for the company's aborted October 19 launch date, Starr said, "This short but critical amount of time will give us time to address several issues including stability and balance as well as allowing our players to test the continent of Ligo (L38+) and our major changes to crafting for a few weeks rather than a few days."

Tabula Rasa's standard edition will retail for $49.99. A collector's edition of the game that includes several in-game extras, as well as a special message from Garriott, bonus maps and survival guides, Tabula Rasa dog tags, a commemorative coin, a poster, and a making-of DVD, will be available for $69.99. Both editions include the first month of play free. Afterward, the game requires a recurring monthly subscription fee of $14.99.

I'm pretty pissed, I loved the beta. and have been advertising it. I think if they ACTUALLY RELEASE IT they could make changes, I mean look at WoW patches every other day. Please release the game, I promise that we will buy it Mister Garrott!

I played the beta. Very, very fun game. A really good change from WoW, which I'm about burned out on. The graphics looked fairly good, the guns were really cool looking, and after just a couple levels, my character felt pretty powerful. Other than a few graphical issues, which I've encountered in other MMO's that have been out for years, the only major bug I found was lag. And the lag was barely noticeable on low populated areas. Even with the lag and delay, it didn't affect the game that much. It would really mess up PVP but I'm not the greatest fan of PVP so... for questing and leveling, the game seemed pretty well put together. But then I'm old school. I've been gaming for for 24+ years, since I was 5ish, and I don't require perfection to enjoy a game.

From all the bad hype everyone was giving, I was expecting something far less than it was. Good game. I will buy it and play it. Maybe not worth $14.99 a month but neither is WoW.

Gee... I thought all you beta players signed NDAs... do you know what that means? You can't talk about the game. What the hell, you don't care. This is what happens when there is no age limit on betas... :/

It may actually be a game worth trying out. But between my World of Warcraft addiction and Warhammer comming out soon, I doubt I'll take the time to play this. I'd give it more consideration if those wonderful folks on GameSpot end up giving it a rating of 9.5 or higher.

I'm playing the beta and I'm loving it. YES ,there are some bugs, and YES the launch is delayed. Best to fix the bugs BEFORE people go out and spend money to buy the game AND spend money on the monthly fee (HALO 3 and XBOX 360 issues, anyone?!) I've had both, and it's a great idea for them to work out the bugs and make sure their people are happy enough to WANT to play the game after beta. I already have my collector's edition ordered and will be happily enjoying this game when it's released.

Tabula Rasa is not a very fun game from my limited beta exploits. I will certainly pass on this one.

Bring me Warhammer Online, possibly even Age of Conan, or if by some miracle -- Darkfall.

2 weeks lol even that isnt going to save this balanceless/broken game plus there actually expecting people to pay $14.99 a month for this lol they need at least 6 months to at least do something with this.

Anyone playing the beta will know that this game is still way too broken to be ready in a month. I hope I'm proven wrong because its a great game - its just seriously BUGGY.

This game is such a DISAPPOINTMENT! Such boring, lackluster gameplay. Not a shooter, yet no real rpg immersion. TR is even crappier than LOTRO. Shame.

On the bright side... The longer it stays in beta, the longer I can play the beta for free. I haven't even tried the instanced missions yet (waiting till my character reaches a higher level), but the other part of the game is a lot of fun. I don't know much about crafting, as it's never been a big thing for me in any MMO. When I get crafting recipes I usually sell them for more ammo. This will be a good game. There's already a lot of content, and now it just needs polish.

Draven03 - That's right! DAoC had a really smooth launch, probably the smoothest so far. I beta'd that game, but didn't go beyond my free month of retail when it hit shelves.

Yet you can come on here and argue about it.

Same story as usual -- there has never been, and likely never will be, an MMO that the community believes is ready at launch. Which is not to say Tabula Rasa IS ready, I'm sure it's not, and the criticism is probably fair, but they could wait another year or three and people would be saying all the same things. It would help if more of these companies had some idea why they were making their game in the first place -- I think that lack of vision is the reason why so many of these games end up getting delayed for years, and finally released in a half-baked state, with the best case scenario recouping some of the millions of development dollars before the thing goes dark.

(I'm actually planning on trying Tabula Rasa, but I don't have ridiculously high expectations of it. The beta isn't bad, just nothing revolutionary.)

I can forgive the choppy performance and bugs of the beta, because it is after all a beta, but the unforgivable thing is that even if the game ran perfectly and was bug-free, I couldn't see a single thing in there that would make me want to play it over any other MMO.

They've been touting this as a revolution in MMORPGs. The only thing this game revolutionizes is mediocrity.

Zemus, unfortunately every MMO that releases releases into a Beta state. The only real exception to that rule was WoW, and that had to deal with different problems since thier game wasn't designed for the number of people who were interested in playing it.

Every MMO is going to have a shake-down period after launch where something is not going to go as planned. If you want a stable more-finished MMO, just wait about 6-9months after its release. This is the formulae I found works for most MMOs.

The beta was a disappointment, to say the least. Laggy, buggy, but the biggest issue was that it just wasn't all that much fun to play. It's a shame, but I really hope Mr. Garriot can fix this in time.

2 weeks? How about a year Garriott! Your game is going to be a live Beta Test that costs per month with little to no enjoyable value. I played very far into the beta with a good solid group, NCsoft must be threatening to pull the plug if they don't see profit soon because this game is no where near ready and no sane development team would release this.

They need to take 6 months and make the game actually enjoyable. Garriott had some big ideas, most of which have been dumbed down and now the game doesn't have much of any appeal, if not for being the only new sci-fi MMO.

They'd need more than a month to make this game worthwhile. It definitely shows its age of six years in development hell. It might have been a passable game 4-5 years ago, but it's 2007 now and the bar has been raised well past what the game delivers.
