SCi reveals lower revs, new Hitman, Tomb Raider

Eidos parent SCi touts sequels during downbeat earnings report, says PS3 price cut needed.
By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot
Posted Sep 27, 2007 12:25 pm PT

With Tomb Raider enjoying a high-profile rebirth just last year and Hitman receiving a feature-film adaptation in November, it would seem foolish to pack those franchises away in the mothballs now. Little surprise, then, that Eidos parent company SCi Entertainment confirmed in its fiscal year-end results today that it has sequels in the works for both brands, as well as for other recent hits.

"We are looking forward with much anticipation to the sequels to Just Cause and Battlestations: Midway, which are already in development, and new versions of world-leading franchises Tomb Raider and Hitman," chief executive Jane Cavanagh said in SCi's year-end report.

That was the good news from the company's fiscal-year recap. The bad news was that the company posted lower revenues than it had the year before, and £30 million ($60.8 million) in losses before tax. For the prior year, SCi managed to turn a profit of £8.1 million ($16.4 million).

Steep price cuts on PlayStation 2 games were cited as part of the reason for the declining revenues, as the publisher had to allocate £14.5 million ($29.4 million) for price protection charges to offset those drops. That wasn't the only Sony-related headache for the publisher, as it also expressed concern over the near-term prospects of the PlayStation 3.

"The Board continues to believe in the long-term commercial success of PlayStation 3 but believes this may take more time than originally forecast by Sony," SCi chairman Tim Ryan said in the report. "The Board is of the opinion that the key driver to the acceleration of the installed base of PlayStation 3 will be a further hardware price cut."

As for the recent rumblings that SCi could be acquired, the company's only update was an acknowledgment that it has entered ongoing discussions with a number of possible acquiring companies.

Hells YES! HITMAN ROCKS! BLOODMONEY KICKS ASS!
more Hitman,More Hitman, MORE HITMAN! yeah about that hitman dying thing. When I first played it, I didn't realize that was the last level and you could play I just thought it was a credits scene. I was sad then infuriated that 47 just dies and that was that, then one day I went over to my local Hastings entertainment store and picked up a strategy guide on Hitman Bloodmoney and started to read it and saw that you can actually play the level, I found out how, then I went on and beat it on all difficulties even though the hardest one took me about five hours.

LONG LIVE 47!

Hitman DIDN'T die at the end, he was injected with the experimental drug that slows his heartbeat down, if you played the game you should've hit the mouse button several times and he comes back to life, and THEN you gotta kill everyone, either running out of the church and shooting them one by one or using the priest as cover when he approaches you. You HAVE to FIND everyone on the map and kill EVERYONE, even the Priest, and then the game has a finale cut-scene.

Cant wait for the next Hitman it should be rather amazing however what is up with the Ps2 getting the hitman trilogy but the Xbox and Ps3 didnt get it? Very bad decision in my opinion and I also think Kane and Lynch is another very bad decision. Hitman Good give us the trilogy too.

They are not even releasing Anniversary for the PS3, . . not good. I have it for the ps2 but stopped playing it when they announced it for the 360, Tomb Raider on the 360 spoiled me., thats how I want to play it , It looks horrible on the ps2 in comparison. A new Hitman will do really well on the 360, I can't wait. Oh, I refuse to buy another PS3 game that's not an exclusive until my controller rumbles. Ok Sony?

Finally, something to conclude Tomb Raider Legend's ending. Hitman also is a great thing to hear, I just wish they would change the gameplay for once.

Hmmm.. maybe they should release the sequel of Tomb Raider on the 360 and Wii as well. I don't have a PS3 and I enjoy playing the Tomb Raider series, it wouldn't hurt releasing it on other consoles as well, especially to most who don't even own a PS3. If it makes any sense.

Comments like yours are silly...cause it leads to comments like this:

There is actually a higher percentage of FPS on the PS3 platform at this point. So what's your point?

I know...just wait for it.

"Battlestations: Midway"... when watching Heroes on SKY all I heard was "Heroic gaming from Eidos...". lol

"That wasn't the only Sony-related headache for the publisher, as it also expressed concern over the near-term prospects of the PlayStation 3."

That is why they released Tomb Raider Anniversairy on the 360 in downloadable format and are releasing it on the Wii. This makes up for lost cash. Notice they haven't got a ps3 download...

But - they are talking crap out of the PS3, they can make money on it, they just don't know how to - just like they don't know how to make money on the DS - yet that console sells more than any other.

As long as the Tomb Raider series keeps Crystal D on as the developers, it will work out. I can't wait for another TR game. TR Legend was the first Tomb Raider game I actually liked. My interest in that made me get TR Anniversary.
