New PSP's 250K Japanese debut

First-week sales of Sony's redesigned portable tally a quarter of a million in Land of the Rising Sun.

The newly redesigned PlayStation Portable Slim has been making an impact on Japanese hardware sales charts. After moving 15,564 PlayStation Portables the week of September 3-9, sales of Sony's portable spiked more than sixfold to 95,487 due to the release of Square Enix's Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII on September 13. The jump in sales was heavily attributed to the limited-edition Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII 10th Anniversary bundle, which included the redesigned portable in advance of its official September 20 launch date.

Sony's winning streak continues into this week, as the latest numbers from Famitsu publisher Enterbrain Inc. project that the first-week sales of the PSP Slim totaled 250,702 units. The PSP Slim has now sold a total of 326,645 units in Japan, as of September 23, 75,943 of which coming from the Crisis Core bundle.

The handheld was first unveiled during this year's E3 Media and Business Summit. According to SCEA president Kaz Hirai, the new device is 33 percent lighter and 19 percent slimmer, and it also packs a more efficient battery, is faster at loading games, and features video-out capabilities.

According to Enterbrain's tally, the combined total of the PSP's new and old model currently sits at 6,217,664 units since the original first went on sale for the island nation in December 2004.

I hate to duble comment but man the PSP has a great line up of games coeming! Games like the fallowing:

StarWarsBattlefront: Renagade Squadron, Wipeout: Pules, God Of War, Crisis Core, Secate Agent Clank...................

BTW for those parents worried about kid frendly games we have games like Rachet & Clank, Crash tag team raceing, lots of new and soon to be released puzzle games, Sonic, Naruto, Kindom Hearts (comeing soon), Secrate Agent Clank (comeing soon), Loco Roco, WormsOpenWarfare 2, Marvle Ultamate Alliance, the list goes on for a long time...................

Also you do not need the online to use the wi-fi on the PSP you can play many games with only one UMD game, and two PSPs with the PSPs game shareing feature, you can also use what Sony calls Ad-Hoc for wireless gameplay with a friend in the same room, many PSP games have 8-4 player support for Ad-Hoc and Online modes. Its' a killer system and it will last a long time becuase with Sony updateing it's software with new features, bug fixes and DL content for games it's liek owning a mini PS3 without all the Blu-Ray hassel, or the huge ammount of cash to shell out just to buy it.

I don't know why people like to pretend there are no good games on the PSP. I have around 40 games on the system I want to get. I purchased 9 games I really wanted at the same time I ordered the system. While I have more games for my other systems, never before have I bought so many games right when I bought a new system.

The PSP has tons of remakes of old classic games, often with improved graphics, and/or wifi connectivity to other players.

Beyond that though, it has a lot of the games this generation is missing. A lot of games this generation needs. That being RPGs of every variety. Most of NIS's new games are for the PSP, and the PSP is *the* system to get for Tactical RPGs. Beyond the massive selection of RPGs the system already has, it's also got fun puzzle games like Crush and WTF, and wonderful PSP versions of favorites, such as Twisted Metal: Head-On, Armored Core Formula Front, Me and My Katamari, and PSP's Ape Escape game.

Then it has brand new, original series like Tokobot, and Dungeonmaker: Hunting Ground.

    It's an absolutely solid system.

This is really cool with the video out put!! With programs like http://rn.pqdvd.com/psp/ i've never had a game for my PSP cuz they all sucked (or atleast looked like that sucked) but to put video clips, game trailers and DVD movies onto a 4 gig memory stick the you never have to buy UMD's and its just better to have on the go because when your number comes up in the waiting room you can just turn it off no big deal. Now with the video output though the waiting room or a friends living is a great way to share a video without having to hundle over the PSP with crappy speakers!!!

great news and with the crop of hot new title hopefully it'll last. Maybe developers will take notice and start giving the game it needs to continue to grow. and maybe the gaming press you give the PSP it's due.

My local Target has the new Core PSP Slim, but I traded in my original PSP to Gamestop for store credit towards the new one, and they won't get it until October 1! That's when it's supposed to come out at Gamestop and some online merchants. If you can't wait, go to Target if there's one near you, but I don't know how much they're charging for it.

at first i was kinda pissed, cause they have better load times for the slim and i haven't had many games for the psp for like 2 years BUT i thought about it again and i figure this is actually a really good thing that the slim is taking off because at one point i was really thinking that they might leave the psp behind. but now more games will be made and hey maybe they can fix the load times on the old psp with extra external memory. anyone have any idea baout that they said the slim load times were fixed with the extra 32mb added to the original 32mb so shouldn't that be able to work with the old psp but with extra external memory, developers should be able to do that right??? there were games without those long a$$ load times so it can be done. has to be. so keep it up sony, i've seen a lot of good previews.
