Publisher THQ and developer Relic Entertainment have announced the third expansion pack for their acclaimed PC real-time strategy game, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War. Interestingly, the expansion is being codeveloped in association with Iron Lore Entertainment, the studio that developed the action role-playing game Titan Quest for THQ last year.

The original game, Dawn of War, was released in 2004 and let players command one of four factions in the brutal sci-fi universe created by tabletop game company Games Workshop. The new expansion, titled Soulstorm, will add two playable races from the Warhammer 40,000 universe, one of which will be the dark eldar, a faction of evil and sadistic creatures that are related to the universe's eldar race. This addition brings the game's full total of playable races to nine, counting the previous two expansions.

The new game will add air units, as well as a new "medal" system for multiplayer. It will also introduce a new campaign structure that will let players take a more strategic view of waging war through an entire star system.

The standalone expansion is scheduled for release in the spring of 2008.

    I think the flyin units will konda ruin it
    Its not warcraft where only ranged units can attack them, everybody has guns or a ranges attack, besides mabe a demon or two

    i knew it! i predicted that the next expansion would include new vehicles for each faction which is needed, escpecialy the boring chaos. And i was right!

    They say theres gonna be air units but ill bet it'll only be for air strikes and stuff like that. Tyranids maybe the other race but i doubt it i think there saving tyranids for dow 2.

    Sounds awesome, especially with dark eldar being 1 of the new races. And in response to MalteserGezar, 1 example of a tyranid flying unit (if they are the other race) would be a harridan, though what else could be used i dont know.

    Tyranids what a bore another hord race. witch hunters a copy of space marines..... what??? Some how i dont think so you could say that about chaos and space marines in apperance thats it. All the races in w40k are great some better then others my personal favorite the daemon hunters why? because there is nothing more noble then to try and destroy evil its self. oh and if you want more in information on the races click on www.gamesworkshop.co.uk and click on the race you want to find out about. Tyranids there going to add air craft how does tyranids get round this one?

    The other race has to be the Tyranids. IF the they put in the Witch Hunters it be like a copy of the Space Marine and if someone cares the Dark Elder are a offshoot of Choas.

    I love these games, except for one thing: no air combat! That's all about to change now. Also, BTW, I have no idea who the Tyranids are, so can someone help me? I just got the platinum edition 3 days ago and have no idea about the story line.

    well from what i have read, the second new army will either be witch/deamon hunters (boo) or Tyranids (YAY). But then you need to put the name of the expansion into account: Soulstorm. The common theory is that tyranids come from beyond the warp in search of food. Soulstorm is a warp storm. So lets pray to god that Relic read the thousands of threads crying out for tyranids in the next game... and not just another imperium faction!!

    Edit: Also they couldnt make a deamon hunters army without borrowing many models from the space marine (grey knights, librarian as well as buildings)

    There never going to add tyranids because "the current dawn of war engine doesnt do the tyranids justice" so i would bet the new race will be the inquisiton. There you would be able to pick witch hunters or daemon hunters like how tau can select between the Kauyon and Mont'ka. Lets face it this is going to be the last dow exspantion so why miss out a race.

    True, I see where you are coming from and you make a good point. But also, it'd be really easy to concoct some story of one race chasing another race and so on, so that it's not the Dark Eldar and Witch hunters directly chasing each other.

    I'm just guessing that if the devs are going to add an evil race they are definitely going to add a good race. The Daemonhunters are mainly just a borrowed army consisting of inq. stormies, guardsmen, marines, and special grey knights. It has too many of the units already in the game. The Witchhunters however, have many unique units including the extremely popular Adepta Sororita.

    But, really, who knows?

    Why would Witch Hunters fight the Dark Eldar? I mean, they are horrible aliens and such but that normally isn't their primary foe. It's usually Chaos.

    Come on now!!! theres no technical reason why they cant put Tyranids in the engine, if they dont revel thats what the second race is i'll go out and eat a local stray cat

    The sisters of battle aren't a faction. They belong to the Witch Hunter's faction, but I believe they can be attached to the Daemon Hunters under certain circumstances.

    I would love it if they put tyranids as the other race, but I think Kasar1 is right. The engine just wouldn't be able to support the kind of on table armie that I can muster with my tyranids.
    But it would still be cool

    Im happy to see this game moving foward still, but man, cant they ever get rid of gamespy? Its just a joke of a service. Almost ruins the entire experience for me. Almost.

    I don't think it'll be the Tyranids, they said a while ago that the current game engine just won't do any justice for the Tyranids. More likely to be the Sisters of Battle as the demonhunters are more incorporated into the Space Marine group. Which ever one it is, I can't wait to play it

    The only reason this game was delayed, is because relic was busy working on COHpposing fronts. Which, incidently, was subpar. Judging by the screens so far, he expansion feels rushed... although that could just be due to DOW's aging engine.

    Gunwar-

    Standalone means that the game will support itself, it is not an expansion.
    What you have is a DVD-disk with 3 standalone games on it.
    You should be fine.
    Say you didn't have that DVD-disk pack? you'd be able to play this new game, but what you cant do is play online multiplayer with the older factions (it's their way of saying you'll need to buy the old games, to play the old factions in multiplayer mode)

    All I know is that the other possible race for this game is either the Imperial Inquisition (Sisters of Battle, Inquisitors, Imperial Stormtroopers, Grey Knights) or Tyranids. In my own opinion Tyranids would be bad ass!

    On the relic boards they said that the current game engine wouldn't do the Tyranids justice, something to do with them having 4 legs instead of 2 and and their way of movement being so different from anything else. So the second race probably won't be Tyranids, more than likely Relic's using the stand alone expansion as a stop gap measure until DOW 2 comes out which should be able to handle the Tyranids (not that I'm complaining this game looks quite good and I'd rather they took their time than screw it up) . P.S- the creatures in the second shot are Dark Eldar Warp beasts not the Nids.

    Well Iron Lore is creating this expansion, not Relic so Relic is probably working on Dawn of War 2 or something. Hopefully.

    I have a question~~~ I just got my DOW in Platium Edition and they putted the original DOW, WInter Assault, and Dark Crusade into only 1 disk. Will that disk I get from the Platium Edition support this new Soulstorm expension?

    A delay, a man I was hoping it would come out in late 2007 but now in spring 2008. Must be pretty big if they put a delay on. But with these new air units it maybe more interesting than just land units. TOTAL CARNAGE!!

    one thing i hope they add is the ability to play as the factions of each race, in stead of the blood ravens, play as the space wolves in campaign, instead of the word bearers of chaos, play as the alpha legion. I speak of this all in campaign, what i really want is more diversity in chaos, more deamons, the juggernaugts and the other three greater deamons of chaos.

    i really hope they add another of the imperial guard factions, like the Catachans or the Armageddon Steel Legions or the Terrax Guard. The armies of man are so numerous, I'm surprised they've only put in One faction of Space Marines and Cadian guardsmen.Although with the advent of air units.... the other faction just COULD be the Harakoni War Hawks....

    Very shrewd move:Relic gives the fans a bridge of sorts between DC and DoW2, farms it out to a 3rd party, and continues work on the sequel. I'll be watching to see how this plays out...

    It's about time they put in air units, some of my friends have dismissed this game as an RTS because of that which kind of annoyed me. I wonder what the other race will be. I kind of wish that they would just make Dawn of War 2 though, we've already got the original and 2 expansions, the engine could use an update.
