Ubisoft launches Tom Clancy airborne

As-yet-untitled extension in wargame brand to feature aerial combat over US skies for consoles and PC in 2008; Blazing Angels studio tapped to develop.

For some mysterious reason, France-based publisher Ubisoft seems to have it out for the US. Earlier this year, the prolific publisher promoted its latest Tom Clancy-inspired series EndWar through a viral marketing campaign that played heavily on the collapse of the American government due to a fictional WWIII. Today, Ubisoft unveiled yet another Tom Clancy extension, and once again America seems to be on the unhappy side of a 10-megaton bomb.

As with the rest of the Tom Clancy franchise, the as-yet-untitled game takes place in the near future, with America under attack by a powerful private military group. However, diverging from the infantry-based warfare found in the rest of the franchise, Ubisoft's latest takes to the skies for futuristic flight combat.

At the helm of high-tech jet fighters, players will engage in "all the action and excitement of modern air combat, from intense dogfighting to tactical strikes," said Ubisoft managing director Sébastien Delen. The game will also support online multiplayer combat and have a gradient learning curve through adjustable player-assist features.

Ubisoft has tasked its studio in Bucharest, Romania, to develop the game. Ubisoft Romania's previous work includes Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII and Silent Hunter: Wolves of the Pacific.

Ubisoft plans to launch its latest Tom Clancy series in 2008 on consoles and the PC.

Uh, please can Tom Clancy just go back to writing books that were actually good and leave us gamers all alone. The only things of his I've enjoyed is Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield and Rainbow Six: Vegas.

I'll keep playing the Ace Combat series of flight sims. The fact the the studio that gave such titles as "Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII" and "Silent Hunter: Wolves of the Pacific" does not inspire a great deal of confidence.

To bmanva: a lot of countries have the the technology to "stand toe to toe with US current generation fighters" but they just happen to be our friend right now. And it helps that most of them fly our planes...... lol

And guys..... Vegas 2 should be out in sometime in March, Gamespot is on top of the story so you should probably check it out.

We need a game like Desert Strike, I doubt this one will touch base on that so I won't get too excited. It seems to have a 40% chance of being an OK game.

I'm sorry but "excitement of modern air combat, from intense dogfighting to tactical strikes"? Modern air combat is neither exciting nor does it involve dogfighting. And no nation have the technology to stand toe to toe with US current generation fighters (heck even the F15 were good enough).

I've been waiting for a good air combat simulation game in a long time. Ace Combat would be better if it didn't involve fictional countries. I'm definately excited about this one and Tom Clancy has been coming out with some very good games lately.

I’d love to see them split the rainbow six series into two different games. One following the new more arcade style which I enjoy allot and another based on the old games with planning and depth which were fun too. I really think there is the potential for two great games.

consoles have yet to get a flight sim right. all too often it turns into flying neverending circles in an attempt to get behind your opponent, while firing ton after endless ton of ammunition from the nose gun... seriously doubt this will be any different. Dear devs: give us either falcon or sturmovic and keep the spec-fi BS to yourselves.

I'm gonna wait till they show some footage so I can make a decision whether or not to buy Ace Combat 6 ?

Ubisoft still have to make :
    GRAW 3,
    R6:V 2,
    They still have to complete:
    End War;
    Splinter cell: Conviction

What else are they going to bring out.
    Tom Clancy's Tactical Sea Warfare.
    (doesn't sound that bad)

It seems to me they are slapping the name Tom Clancy too haphazardly onto their upcoming titles now, so many great titles are under his name (Rainbox Six, Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, etc). If they start lowering the notch the series won't be looked upon the same way.

Tom Clancy is not exactly a liberal guy, I'm sure if he felt that the U.S. was being denigrated by the wine & cheese crowd he'd not let it go unfixed.

I just love how they keep coming out with new "Tom Clancy" games despite the fact that he sold his studio rights years ago, and has absolutely nothing to do with the video game industry anymore.

themovi3nut i gotta disagree, Ubi and Clancy have always made great games, and i'm sure they have a nice budget to work with, just because their branching off from tactical shooters doesn't it won't be as good, it just might cater to a slightly different audience...Personally, i love flight combat games, which are a dying breed these days, so i say bring it on!

this branching off from the initial games is not a good idea, the RTS thing is bad and now flight sim is just stupid, keep it to shooters i say

i think its a bit strong that Gspot put that Ubisoft has it out for the US - i mean come on - the gamer will still be fighting for the US (in the campaigns) most probably and in the end will save the world... same kind of story - its the different setting and the actual middle context bit that is GREAT!
