Sony reaffirms 11 million PS3 shipment goal

Electronics giant says it's still on track to hit worldwide shipment target by the end of March 2008, might acquire more development studios.

From the PlayStation 3's November 2006 release through the end of Sony's fiscal year the following March, the electronics giant shipped 5.5 million systems to retailers worldwide. Although the system didn't fly off the shelves as quickly as Sony had hoped, the company projected that it would double shipments to 11 million for the current financial year, which runs through March of 2008.

According to a Reuters report, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai told the news service in an interview that the company is on track to hit its 11 million goal. To help reach that goal, Hirai also said Sony may acquire more developers so it can create exclusive titles to drum up consumer demand. However, Sony won't purchase studios just because it can.

"Talks of an acquisition would emerge only when a company already has tight relations with us, its corporate culture is compatible with ours, its employees are working closely with us, and it can churn out strong software titles," Hirai told Reuters.

Earlier this week, Sony announced the acquisitions of Evolution Studios (MotorStorm), including its Bigbig Studios subsidiary (Pursuit Force). Financial terms of that deal were not disclosed.

Sony can't have that big of a price cut.. They'd lose money by selling consoles. Making a PS3 costs more then 400bucks, so they sell it for more then 400bucks. Even if they start selling-out theyll still lose money. What they need is good games... good long games. Blue Ray this, Blue Ray that, produce a game that I can play for more then 7 hours. And maybe ill put down my 360 controller and pick up a PS3.

omg Hekynn they cant lower the PS3 price to wii price and still make money. They have to sell it for around the cost of making it in order to have profit.

    Please think before posting.

I'm predicting a price cut before the Christmas season rush for the PS3, and if they cut the price to 400$, they will sell like hotcakes, also with MSG4 coming out, Devil may Cry, God of War (unfortunately we'll have to wait until 2009 for that), KZ2 and FFIII, they just need more exclusives to compete with titles like Halo 3. Honestly I know me and a few friends are just waiting for that price cut, and we'll pick one up in a flash. Maybe something might be announced at the TGS, haha I hope.

If PS3 can achieve 11 millions by next march, that is very good. From Oct to March, it has to sold 1 million PS3 per month. No price cut that would be difficult unless Blu-Ray take off or some killer games. I am excited.

I don't know about anyone else but here in WV you can't buy a WII but there are PS3's all over the place. No one is buying them and that is the fact . We have 3 gamestops within 20 minutes of me and I frequent them often I can tell you that at one of them they have had 2 PS3's since march thats 6 friggen months. Man Sony is doomed. DOOMED I SAY!!!

At this point, I would prefer to have a much cheaper PS3 before I invest in it. For me, 400 bucks is the Maximum for a console that I will pay, and because of that Microsoft and Nintendo have me as a customer.

Well reuters have reported that Sony have now sold, as to consumers, 5 million consoles so a shipment target of 11 million by March is definitily plausible especially as we have the Christmas shopping spree to come and big name games for ps3 in early 2008 like KZ2, LBP and MGS4 etc.

Go to the stores a lot as I work near the city centre, every games shop has a nice sized pile of dusty unsold PS3 consoles and a lack of people looking at the games on display, in the UK at least its bombing horribly.

plus this is what I want, more exclusives. because we all know the ps3 is the most powerfull and advanced console out there, but it has not been shown yet! but with more exclusives soon we will see the ps3 puching out games that the 360 could NEVER do even if it used like 5 disks. sony has made a superior console by far, now all they need is superior games for its console.

but for now I have more games for my 360 (thiugh I havent played them scince warhawk) and I will probably get multiplatformers for it cos they look a bit better and are cheaper.

comthitnuong the numbers dont lie, they are on track. and with sony buying development studios this means more exclusives that people will want, if they keep this up it will not be long before the ps3 comes out on top. plus with the rumor of a $400 ps3 which sounds true if all the big exclusives are coming out early next year. sony is about to geta a huge surge in sales!

like gamespot says if sony must buy more companies to sell consoles then it willl, they have the money, it will create more exlusives and it will help them in the long run.
people say that sony has no games but it does, warhawk just came out and its amazing for example. and you can only get licenced F1 games on the ps3. I have never gone a day without something to play on the ps3.

  • comthitnuong

    Posted Sep 22, 2007 10:07 pm PT

11 million by march is certainly not a realistic goal. At the rate its going right now, the PS3 will never be able to sell that much. Sony may be able to load up stores with stockpiles of them, but as for them selling 11 million, its not going to happen. Just look at the Xbox 360. It has sold about 11-12 million, and has been out a year longer than the PS3.

I think Sony should focus more on bringing those PSone classics on the PS Store as well as gathering more titles on the PS3 since it's quite pointless to buy the PS3 if there weren't any games for it.

You guys are idiots. It's a shipment target for MARCH NEXT YEAR! When we can expect games like MGS4, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, etc to be out and sell a sh*tload of PS3s. Of course it's gonna sell. Shipment is an ongoing process and 11 million PS3s is the "sum total" of all the PS3s Sony expects to have shipped since this March and they can ship only so much they can sell. So learn to read.

  • Slash_out

    Posted Sep 22, 2007 2:03 pm PT

What's the point of shipping so much if it's not selling?
There already are plenty of PS3 everywhere and it still not selling, sending more won't increase the sell. Ressellers are already crying with those unsold PS3 on their hand.

shipping doesn't mean anything, it just means that there's more ps3's on the selves and they been on the selves. Don't get me wrong, I'm still going to get one, but I don't think it'll rule. Cause of the games that are going to be on there, I'm a Final Fantasy fan and have to have a ps3 to play it, and love tekken also, so I have no choice but to get one. if they were multi platfrom I wouldn't need to get a ps3

Wow, are you new to the videogame world?

Successful systems garner third-party support, which sometimes translates into exclusive titles. I waited years to buy a PS2 but eventually had to because of so many good titles that I was missing out on by not owning one.

I want to start by saying that I own an XBOX 360 and a Wii. As it stands, I have no intention of buying a PS3 until next year. I agree that the price is more than a little steep, and the amount of content available is lacking at the moment. However, I did buy a 360 at launch, and the situation wasn't much different there. Granted, the price was lower, but the lineup was horrible. Until Oblivion came out, players were stuck with titles such as King Kong, Gun, Kameo, PGR3, Ridge Racer, and various sports titles. Nothing at launch for the 360 was worth shouting about, but titles slowly came, and the system is doing well. So what's not to say that the same isn't going to happen to the PS3 once it gets some more solid titles under it's belt. The fact of the matter is that whether or not the PS3 does well or not, has no impact on gamers who don't play that system. The only people who stand to lose if the system were to flop (other than Sony), are the PS3 owners, and since all of them seem to love the system, then more power to them. I have no problem with gamers claiming loyalty to a certain system, but the bickering about what is the better of the three is just ridiculous. Play what you like and let everyone else play what they like. I've said it before, but it's the same as bashing someone because they like chocolate ice cream, but you think vanilla is better. Wow, that got long quickly. Sorry for the sermon.

ok, vass86. I cannot get my head round how and why people still think the PS3 is expensive $499 on bestbuy, that's £250 in my country, that is SO cheap for the power house your actually getting. I know people go on about how they don't want a media machine, they don't want a Blue Ray player, but listen up, your getting it and think yourself lucky as your getting it for a bargain. I paid £425 just for the console on launch and I still even then considered I had a bargain, and I still do. Its not expensive for what it is atall, I just don't get it, sorry. Both the PS1 and PS2 launched at $368 which 12 years and 7 years ago was alot of money! and for the record the original xbox launched at $368 xbox 360 launched at $399 (the one with a 20gb hard drive). so, based on all that I really really don't see the big deal.

ok, i'm prob going to grilled but heres my thought. PS3 has been out since Nov, and Since March in Europe, it has 76 games available on it, 33 that Gamespot have scored 8 + and a further 18 that have scored 7+, now I don't think that is bad. I probably play hour a day, weekends maybe 6 hours, and not once since launch have I been without a game to play. And even if you complete them all, there are so many with replayability values such as motorstorm (new expansion packs avail, free and $1.99), warhawk, rainbow 6, if your bored, get on the network and create some new challenges. I'm no fanboy, I'm not even an avid sony fan, I bought it at launch with high hopes and so far have only been impressed, great games (not loads of course, 1st year), regular network firmware updates, and nothing sort of a very exciting up coming 12 months, with so many new features etc and a whole load of potentially outstanding games. My feelings are, if you have a ps3 enjoy it if you feel you can't don't rant about it and constantly put sony down sell it. It's so easy to get caught up in all this anti-sony chat, but i'l just sit and smile, as this is exactly how it was with PS2, "how can they force a dvd player onto people", "where are the games". They did, and what a success that machine has had. I'd like to see the list of games available on the xbox 360 in the first 10 months.
