Hell's Highway beta near, release delayed to early '08

[UPDATE] Gearbox confirms incoming beta test of multiplatform shooter, but Ubisoft has pushed the game back to the first quarter of next year.

With the Halo 3 hype, Wii frenzy, and PS3 announcements dominating the headlines, many lower-profile games are being overshadowed in the public eye. One such game is Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway, the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 World War II shooter from Gearbox Software and Ubisoft.

Thought it was expected to hit retail before the year's end, it now seems Hell's Highway could be taking a detour to an early 2008 release. When asked if the game was still on schedule to ship for the holidays, a Gearbox rep said that nothing is currently set in stone. "Gearbox has yet to announce any release date," cautioned the rep. "There has been a good deal of speculation about the date, but we'll send out a news item when there's a real one. ... [Gearbox CEO] Randy [Pitchford] has recently stated that a release date will be coming very soon."

[UPDATE]: Shortly after press time, Ubisoft circulated an updated release calendar confirming that Hell's Highway would indeed miss its previously announced holiday 2007 launch window. The game will now ship in Ubisoft's fiscal fourth quarter, which runs from January to March. Despite the delay, fans of the series won't be entirely at a loss this year; a Wii version of Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 is set for a December release.

The delay will frustrate fans eager to play the game, but one piece of news that will be universally welcomed is that work on the game--which drew praise for its detailed graphics and intense gameplay at the 2007 E3 Media & Business Summit--is nearing a crucial phase. "We're rapidly approaching Beta status on Hell's Highway," promised the rep, raising the prospect of a Call-of-Duty-4-style test before year's end.

    I guess they got rid of Double time for the Wii, and instead get Road to Hill 30.

    Though it would be awesome if they released a demo, it wouldn't matter because I have a child account! Oh well. I'm buying this anyway, whenever it comes out.

    I'm not bothered at all by yet another delay from Ubisoft. It just gives Gearbox some more time to polish up their game which already looks spectacular. Think about how it's going to be when a possible Beta comes out and when it's a finished product. Also, keep in mind that 2008 is right around the corner as well so it's not like the release is a lifetime away.

    In my own opinion, I am proud to say i'm not buying this game anymore, i've waited long enough and now your holding it back again, theres plenty of other games to buy I don't nessecarily like them but oh well. I guess i'll take my money somewhere else.

    I was wondering what the deal was with Hell's Highway when I realized I hadn't heard anything new about it for a while. They might have hit a snag in their development or something and that's probably why it was delayed. Then again I could be wrong.
    I have nothing against WWII games as long as they're good. And even though, I didn't really like the first two games, I am interested in at least trying this one out, because it seems to have a lot of cool features in its design and gameplay that makes it look like an awesome game.

    If they brought out a beta test, that would definitely be sweet. The COD4 beta really got me into COD4, which otherwise I wouldn't of picked up. So a beta test this holiday (the later the better) or early next year (the earlier the better) would be a good idea. Then come out with the game is Q1 08. Only problem is, Q1 08 is almost as jam packed as Q4 07. There have been so many games that have been pushed from Q4 07 into Q1 08 it's crazy.

    Hopefully the game does well, I've always been a fan of the Brother's in Arms games. And no, I crappy Wii port will not hold fans over until Hell's Highway release. But a beta, even if it's only on one platform, certainly will.
