Force being Unleashed on Wii next spring

Following months of rumors, LucasArts confirms its first game featuring Wii Remote-enabled lightsaber combat.

After using the Wii Remote as a virtual sword in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, many gamers had one question on their minds: "When can I use this thing as a lightsaber?" Today, LucasArts had an answer: Spring 2008, when the publisher of all things Star Wars will release its first game for Nintendo's wildly popular console.

Contrary to some rumors, the game in question will not be an all-new title; rather, it will be a port of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, also due for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, and Xbox 360. Unlike its siblings, the Wii edition will have an emphasis on lightsaber combat via an exclusive duel mode. The mode will allow two players to face off in head-to-head matches using Wii Remotes as if they were the energy blades favored by the Jedi Knights.

The Wii edition of The Force Unleashed is being developed by Australia-based Krome Studios (Viva Piņata: Party Animals; The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night). All versions of the game will put players in the shoes of an as-yet-unnamed Force-adept character toiling secretly under the auspices of none other than Darth Vader to seek out and destroy the Jedi stragglers who could threaten the Empire's power.

The Force Unleashed made an impression at the 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo with its cutting-edge graphics, physics, and artificial intelligence, which are powered by Pixelux's Digital Molecular Matter and NaturalMotion's Euphoria middleware. GameSpot's previous coverage has more details on the game and its groundbreaking technology.

I think this games swordplay will be better than TP and SC Legends combined.

If they can get the lightsaber's feeling right. Imagine the glory. Use B to turn it on, swiveling your own virtual light saber as your character does in front of you.

i think this will be a break through for krome studios as now more and more people have wii's and millions like star wars i think he has a best seller and can anybody tell me how we are suppose to control the lightsaber with the remote and use force powers.

I'm thinking this will be an average game at best. As its being made for all the consoles and not specifically the Wii i'm really worried it will be a less graphics/physics intensive game with some shake the wii remote moments when compared with the other versions.

Who knows, maybe they will dedicate a team on the Wii versions so we get the light saber wiielding (see what i did there) game we Wii users want.

hopefully they dont screw it up. it could prove to be one of the best games for the Wii. if done right of corse. Just like Zelda PH that could have been a terrible game , but nintendo showed how the touch screen could be used.

Of course, this title has tons of potential. It's what we've all been waiting for. Even though you can swing your Wii Remote like a lightsaber in Lego Star Wars Complete Saga, it's not quite what we want. Hopefully, this won't be like a lot of other Wii ports where developers rush the game just so they can have something for the current hottest selling game console. Please, Lucasarts... don't disappoint us. Take your time and make this a great game.

I am so excited for this game to be released!!!!! I seriously can not wait to control a lightsaber and Force powers with my Wii remote and Nunchuk. I also can not wait to just slaughter people in the special head-to-head mode of this amazing game. And I can not forget about throwing Stormtroopers around using the Force. Plus, working as the infamous Darth Vader's apprentice. That alone is a dream come true. This game is going to This game is going to draw people to an amazing new galaxy with friends and foes alike, as it will revolutionise the way that Star Wars games are played. I am extremely excited that it has been confirmed to be on the Wii. This will be by far one of the greatest games released on the Wii in my opinion. I can not wait!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am sick and tired of hearing how everyone is saying the sword controls in Twilight Princess were lame. The game was not meant to be revolutionary. Nintendo only wanted Wii buyers to experince the game, the controls I think were not on the top of their concern list. Besides Lucas Arts will make it first person because they would lose a whole lot of money if they didn't

I just hope they dont do stupid things like you shake the remote like crazy to do things that use the force or to do jumps or some thing anoing.

I really hope they do this well. If they do, it would have to be one of the best games ever. Just imgine it: first person sword combat, slashing and blocking with a friend too. It'd be so fun.

I know graphically speaking the Wii version will be underscored heavily by the PS3 and 360 releases, but to me actually having full control over the saber (and force powers?) with the Wii remote will totally be worth any loss in the graphics area. The moment I found out this game was slated for everything but the Wii I was protesting against LucasArts since this kind of control scheme is just a dream come true for any Star Wars fan. Let's just hope the port is made smoothly and the controls make this game a stand out from the other versions!

Sorry for this being a bit off topic but who thought that Zelda for the Wii was rushed for those who have played the previous two games on the N64? Is it just me or was the game a little too easy?

  • ry0

    Posted Sep 24, 2007 8:29 am PT

I hope it would be like you said pho8nix, but i still don't mind if it's like zelda. Still better than nothing!

I am a Wii owner, but i think that they will ruin this game by using the same sword action as used in Zelda. It should be like Oblivion, first person and the ability to look from behind as well. The movement of the sword should be the same as you move the remote. To block you have to move the remote into the same position as the sword or object coming at you.

  • VagrantChild24

    Posted Sep 23, 2007 4:31 pm PT

Seems like a promising game. Since he is a Jedi-in-training they can still fit some blaster sections in too theoretically. Then you can get the best of both worlds. Hopefully the control is responsive becuase if it reacts well the two player fights could be a ton of fun. All we need now is something along the lines of Bushido Blade.

This game will either be the most talked about Star Wars game ever or it's going to flop and flop hard. People have been clamoring for a lightsaber Wii game ever since they first saw the controller. Hope it rocks.

I agree with firebreathing. The thing I like about the PS3 and 360 version is the use of Digital Molecular Matter and Euphoria. Having the objects in the world and the characters react like they would in real life was one of the draws of this game, as well as the storyline bridging the gap between Ep 3 and 4. Of course the story will remain the same throughout the different versions of the game, but what about DMM and Euphoria? I don't think the wii can handle these techs. But since i don't have a PS3 or 360, and I do have a Wii, I guess I'll have to cross my fingers.

I don't know how they're going to pull this off, but I'll give them instant bonus points for trying. I'll still get the 360 version instead of the Wii version, just in case disappointment will ensue amongst fans like me. Face it: Wii ports have been pretty lackluster. I hope this game will be a turning point, but my expectations are still low. Go pessimism! =3
