Halo 3-themed 360 lands Sept. 16

$399, HDMI-ready, green-and-gold console goes on sale Sunday (Bungie's shooter not included).

During this year's E3 Media & Business Summit, Microsoft revealed that it would once again be producing a limited-edition Halo-themed console in tribute to Bungie's highly acclaimed franchise. As part of its massive marketing push to secure the already-predicted $200 million in initial sales, Microsoft announced today that the Halo 3 Special Edition Xbox 360 would be available as of September 16.

Colored "Spartan Green" with golden trim, the Halo 3 SE 360 will retail for $399 and be accompanied by a matching wireless controller. Also included in the package will be a 20GB hard drive, a headset, a play-and-charge kit, an exclusive Halo 3 theme and gamer pics, as well as support for HDMI output.

One thing not included in the Halo 3 360 package is the game itself. Aspiring Master Chiefs will still have to wait until September 25 to pick up the final installment in Bungie's space shooter trilogy, which is rated M for Mature. $59.99 on its own, Halo 3 has not one, but two special editions: the $69.99 Collector's Edition and the $129.99 Legendary Edition.

Does anyone know for sure it this halo themed xbox 360 has the 65nm or Falcon chip inside. Better to find out before spending $400 and get pretty red flashing lights.

well it wouldn't matter in the end... apparently tons of H3 games are scratched just from the packaging itself so whether or not this box crashes or yours does, you might not even be able to play. now that's a frightening thought.

this is my first 360, and although i cant confirm its got the falcon chip, i can say it plays fine. played about over 12-14 hrs so far(over the past 6 days), no problems. ohh and it looks great, dont know why people keep saying puke green, it doesnt remind me of puke at all. it army green, and has a ton more detail on the box than people know. writing about it being "unsc property", unsc logos, etc. and the play and charge kit is the icing on the cake. regardless of the system being new, im cautiously playing it no more than 2-3 hrs at a time. 360 breakdowns being so common has made me a little paranoid. dont want it breaking on me any time soon, especially since the 25 is coming up.

TARGET STORES HOARDING HALO 3 XBOX 360S
The release was on Sunday Sept 16th, but Target has decided to hold its stock of Halo3 Edition 360s back until the 25th so they can bank on more attached sales like they did with the PS3 and Wii at their launch. I know this first hand because I just tried picking one up today (9.20.2007) and was turned away by two different target stores one of which whom said they were available for sale when I called yesterday.

I have heard that the screens really dont do it justice and that this actually looks amazing in person. Plus, it has the new 360 parts like the elite, that drastically reduce the chances of red ring o death.

Hey! it may not look perfect, but inside these halo3 editions 360's are the new imporved xbox 360's. They have the new 'falcon' chip (reduces power usage and heat) and a new heat vent..wish i had one...my 360 just pooped out on monday (red ring of death) ...dumb thing didn't even last 3 months!...I recommend purchasing the console, if you can stand the color...Oh, yeah! don't forget to buy h3 too! that would be weird, perhaps ironic, to have a Halo 3 edition 360 without the Halo 3 game...

"that's really too bad that it won't come with the game, since you're spending so much money already on the system. I wouldn't do it"

"makes no sense for a halo themed console to launch without the halo."

    a) I would expect the game stores to do a bundled 'deal' to include the game
    b) and what you get for the price seems okay compared with the pro

If anyone is buying X360 just for Halo 3 then think again because I saw the real ending of Halo 3 on youtube & also on gametrailers. Here is the link http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/106934.html (THIS IS NO FAKE)

Thanks for the info Matt. I have a hunch that the big chains are shifting their old stock from the States to Canada which explains why there probably won't be any HDMI-ready 360pros in Canada for a looong time.

Here's to hoping that the Halo rush clears out the old SKU. -.-

  • SalarianChemist

    Posted Sep 17, 2007 3:52 pm PT

HDMI output is definitely included in this Halo 3 limited edition SKU of the Xbox 360.

How do I know this fact???

Because I bought one today!!! It is an awesome looking system with cool designs all over it!!! Even the headset comes in a Master Chief sort of color!!!

Just like with all Premium Xbox 360 systems, the unit comes with High-Definition Component Cables, and Composite Cables.

Uh, mine is hooked up using an HDMI cable.

Why is it 50 bucks more than a regular 360 bundle if it doesn't come with the game? The Halo themed Zune cost the same amount as a regular one. Not that anyone owns one of those things anyway.

    @Micro48

I work at a Best Buy in Canada, and we've yet to even see the Halo3 consoles. As for the HDMI-equipped Pros, we're still receiving units with manufacture dates of last July, so my guess would be that it'll be awhile before the non-HDMI Pros deplete from the channel and we start seeing HDMI-equipped ones.

I got Kick a$$ looking skins from ebay that look way cooler and cost 20X less. I think ill stick with what i have. I would prolly have goten this if it was an Atomic version (See through green) of the 360 like the halo xbox from CE.

I'm gonna have to agree that MS should have waited a week longer to release the system with a game.....it just makes much more financial sense.

  • RoC1909

    Posted Sep 17, 2007 1:03 pm PT

As I mentioned before, Microsoft being as greed filled as they are, they should have included a copy of the game. It only seems correct that if you are going to have a THEMED CONSOLE, you include in the package what the THEMED CONSOLE is portraying. ABSOLUTE JOKE!!! Microsoft's way of milking the almighty dollar from the SUCKERS that are called gamers.

It looks rather bad. I think a white/black background with a picture of master chief and fighting going on behine him would have been better. PS, halo themed 360, without the halo game? heh.

  • Xeroblack

    Posted Sep 17, 2007 12:15 pm PT

They should have waited to bundle this with the game and made the game have some special things on it so it would be worth the extra money. What i think is funny is you can buy x-box skins an put them on yourself i have a clear 360 now but of course doing so voids your warranty so its do at your own risk

If anyone reading this plans to buy a 360 to play Halo 3. Don't waste your buck on this chip in the extra 50bucks and get an Elite. Not only does it come with an HDMI Cable but it also comes with 100GB more Hard Drive. I dont think this console is aimed at the kids about to go out and buy a 360, no not at all.

I sold my 360 and went out and bought one of these. Its pretty cool. It matches my Halo Zune. Its got some cool little things written on it. I don't know it if its really worth the money, unless you just have it to burn. It is cool though.
