US August game-industry haul nearly $1B

NPD reports combined hardware, software, and accessories sales hit $993 million last month, spurred by Madden, BioShock, Metroid 3, and the Wii; 360 sales skyrocket post-discount.

Today the NPD Group, North America's primary source of game-retail statistics, released its sales figures for August. As has increasingly become the trend, the numbers beat analysts' expectations.

The month saw $993 million of US retail revenue from non-PC game software, hardware, and accessories, up $67.5 million from July's $925.5 million haul. The figure also marked a massive 46 percent year-on-year increase from August 2006's $679 million, which suggests that having all three next-generation consoles in play is helping the industry to grow.

On the $302 million console hardware front, August saw Microsoft drop the price of the Core, Elite, and Pro Xbox 360s by a respective $20, $30, and $50. As a result, sales of the now- $279, $449, and $349 consoles shot up by 100,000 units, going from a combined 170,000 units in July to nearly 277,000 during August.

"The price cut was a big help, as was Madden 08 and BioShock," NPD analyst Anita Frazier told GameSpot. "Taking the price cut prior to Halo 3 set the Xbox 360 up nicely to have a very strong holiday season." NPD now estimates that from the 2005 launch to the end of last month, 6.3 million Xbox 360s have been sold in the US.

By comparison, the retail boost from the 60GB PlayStation 3's price cut appears to be slowing somewhat. After jumping from 98,500 in June to 159,000 in July, sales of the console fell to approximately 130,600. Since the console's launch in November 2006, an estimated 1.75 million PS3s have sold in the US, according to NPD estimates. Its predecessor, the PlayStation 2, has sold 39.1 million units in seven years at American retail, with 202,000 units being picked up last month.

For the second month in a row, the Wii was the best-selling non-PC gaming platform of any kind. That said, the console's 403,600-unit tally was down from a July high of 425,000 units, which is a surprising decline, given the release of the Wii-exclusive Metroid Prime 3: Corruption during the month.

Frazier believes the downturn was not due to lack of interest in the Wii. "Demand is still meeting or exceeding supply," she told GameSpot. As for the ongoing shortage of the console, Frazier thinks that "We'll see this situation continue through the holidays, and we may see some balancing starting February 2008."

When it came to August's $83 million in portable hardware sales, the story remained much the same, with the Nintendo DS's 383,300 units dwarfing the PlayStation Portable's 151,200 units. (Lifetime-to-date, the handhelds have respectively sold 12.7 million and 8.3 million in the US, according to NPD.) Of note is that, for the first time, NPD has stopped reporting monthly sales figures for the Game Boy Advance. First launched in 2001, the handheld was redesigned twice over its lifetime, and has sold nearly 82 million units worldwide to date.

August's $488 million in software sales was thanks in large part to Electronic Arts' Madden franchise. The Xbox 360 version of Madden NFL 08 was the month's top title, followed by the PS2 edition in second place and the PS3 edition in fourth. The original Xbox Madden 08 finished in 11th place, followed by the Wii edition in 12th and the PSP version in 18th.

Given that Take-Two Interactive announced it has shipped over 1.5 million units of BioShock, it should come as no surprise that the 360 version finished third on August's console chart. Contrary to some reports in the European press, the critically lauded retro-sci-fi-shooter handily outsold the month's other major non-NFL release, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, at 490,900 units to 218,100 units.

    Tor, Tor, Tor. You need to stop that 360 hating. Everyone can see the slant you try and put on things. Last month the 360 was barely staving off the PS3, and now that it doubled your fanboy console (PS3) you have to try and bring up PS2. Look man just get a 360 and learn that the PS3 is going to fail no matter how much you try to slant your news to make it look good. If you need money for counseling to deal with your 360 hatred I'll pay for it man. Seriously.

    My proof is there in that list of sales. Where is Madden for the Wii? @vdevpro:Just below the original XBox version. The ONLY 3rd party software title the Wii has had any moderate success with is RE4... a remake. There have been no other 3rd party Wii titles in the top 10. Those are facts.     Is this vbdevpro guy for real, does he actially believe hard core gamers care about graphics all that much? Sure they may look nice but the art style counts for more. I personally have over 315 games and live, breath, and worship games and grpahics aren't my biggest concern, gameplay is. That's why I only ever played to games on my Wii so far: RE4 and MP3, I would have gotten Zelda Twilight Princess had I not already finished it on GC. The only problem with the Wii is it severally lacks good games unlike my 360.

    Dude your smoking crack. Bioshock was released the 21st of the month, and Metroid was shipped the 27th. That is a small 6 day difference. I own them both, and contributed to both of the sales haha.

    But anyway, Bioshock sales will slow down when Halo 3 hits, and Metroid will slow down when the next big Wii game hits...which I think is not till Mario Galaxy

And the people who own both are almost definantly "hard core" if they spend money on 2 systems. So if the multi system owners bought madden for the 360, doesn't that pretty much prove my point?

    I'm glad for Nintendo and all since I grew up on their systems, but this news of them constantly kicking ass in sales is starting to get kind of numb. Every five articles that I find on video games talks about how well the Wii is selling, or how there's always a shortage, or that Wii/DS software sales are always on the top 20, etc. I get it Nintendo, you're winning back the throne you once sat on once a long time ago, but please make an attempt at being humble about it.

    You obviously haven't played Madden football lately. It is anything but casual. Not only is it hardcore, but it is hardcore football. This is not a pick-up-n-play game. And to say Nintendo owned anything software relate the month of august is stupid. 360 software sales alone out sold all other next gen formats COMBINED.

    ohhhh, you know after i'm done with halo 3 (granted, might take a year or so...) but in early november i'll have to start playing Call of Duty 4, but only a week later or so i'll have to pick up Assassins Creed, THEN i'm going to end up geting the 360 exclusive Mass Effect, (possibly one of the best RPG's to ever be made) whew! and after i've beaten all those (don't forget, i only had a couple months to play halo 3) i'll have to get Grand Theft Auto 4... oh, and halo wars is looking pretty darn good too..... wait... what does the PS3 have again? A fps sequal to a game that sucked? killzone what?

    im actually looking foward to halo 3 coming out because after it comes out 360 fanboys arent going to have any desent exclusives to look forward to. 2008 will be the year of the playstation 3 but untill we get some more games i would say that the 360 is infront.........but what happens when their sick of halo 3?

    I think it’s still too early to say who the winner is in this round of console war. Some people keep saying Wii is a fad and gimmicky. Maybe it is, maybe it’s not, but Wii will keep pumping things that had keep them in front of the other fad or otherwise (Wii Fit and Wii Zapper are the first example, of course there will be more). With more and more multiplatform game (Dark Sector, Kane and Lynch, Assassin’s Creed, GTA 4, Wet, Half Life 2 Expansion, Call of Duty 4, UT2007, to name just a few), and exclusive titles (Heavenly Sword, MGS, FF, to name a few) the next couple of month may be the best time to get a PS3, because there will be a 400$ 40GB version (lets face it, with almost the same game that will come out in the next year why buy an Xbox 360 without blue ray and at almost the same price). And the Xbox 360 still had the largest game library when compare to other console of this generation. Some may say that is only because it came out a year earlier, but that is beside the point. Exclusives for the 360 are also not bad, and most of them come out at the end of this year. So you see guys and girls? It’s still a three way fight, however you see it.

    for all the fanboy stuff that flies around I'm just happy to see the videogaming industry doing so well. If they're making money that means there's more of us out there doing what we love to do! play videogames! whether they're Nintendo "Fad machines" as some so eloquently put it or the "hype machine" by Sony, we're all happy to some degree, with our beloved systems. So how bout we all shut up and go play whatever system we like. Heavenly Sword is sick! and so is Bioshock! I take no sides, I love both my systems for very different reasons.

    It scares me to see just how the Sony fan boys are. It reminds me of how I was with Sega. I just looked the other way while Sega kept making mistake after mistake saying that everybody hates them and Sony is paying them to talk bad about Sega. When Sega failed with the Saturn, I had to face the truth that they made mistakes and following a company is dumb when all I really wanted was to play great games. I hate Sony as a company but I had a PS1 and I own a PS2 and I would have missed out on some great games if I had let my hate for Sony control me.

    The only reason that Sony is in the gaming business right now is Nintendo and Sega screwed up big time after the 16-bit era ended. Sony took advantage of that and now Microsoft and Nintendo are taking advantage of the misstakes that Sony is making. In all my years playing games, I have seen what makes a system fail and Sony is doing a lot of those misstakes that make a system fail.

    Well Well Well. The 360 seems to be catching up to Wii and its beating it in software sales wonder where all the Nintendo fanboys are trying to defend thier lame gimmick machine? Oh wait, there's a few of them but too bad that can't argue the fact that the console sales because of it's low price the games are of poor quality, and consits of poorly done GC ports which explains why the Wii software doesn't sell. Fact it folks, the Wii fad is fading and soon this flaw will ruin the novelty of the console making it harder for Nintendo to sell it in 2008.

    You know what I find funny about comments like this? While he says the 360 is outselling Wii Software, it's on the back of a non-hardcore game...Unless Madden counts as a hardcore game now. 360 and PS fanboys tend to change their logic from month to month based on what the news articles say. There were only 2 hardcore games in the top 20 this month. Nintendo products still own half the list.

    Thank you ctg867 for actually providing a mature argument instead of doing what some of the other people have been doing.

    And yes, I know that I failed to mention a host of upcoming Xbox360 games that are going to be hot sellers during the next few months. Halo 3, Skate, GTA 4, Mass Effect, Kane and Lynch, Project Gotham Racing 4, Dark Sector, Call Of Duty 4, and the newly announced Ninja Gaiden 2. All amazing games. And I never for a second stated that the Xbox was not an incredible system with an incredible lineup of games.

    But part of your counter does not hold up also. I actually did each of the things you mentioned, like that RE4 was multi-platform and that GH3 and manhunt aren't out yet. I started by establishing a list of good games that are currently out on the Wii, although yes, I know that theres more good games out on the 360.

    And then I went and talked about the games that are coming in the future of the system that look like that could be enjoyable and strong sellers.

    Everybody fails to realize that im not saying the Wii is a BETTER console then the Xbox360. Because lord knows I dont belive that. The Xbox360 is the most-played system in my house, and that probably wont ever change.

    I'll im trying to do, is show that 1. The Wii is not going to fade away like some people have claimed during this "debate". And that the Wii will most likely out-sell the 360 by the time this console "war" is over. The Wii is not a BAD system, and I don't really like people that say it is, even though they've also stated that they've never played it. Nintendo has made a affordable, fun, and creative system that goes outside the box and appeals to gamers across the board, and it's not going anywhere.

    Yes, I only buy exclusives on PS3... like the uber-produced blockbusting pile of crap Lair *sarcasm*. I honestly already had the check written for a PS3 if Lair had gotten a rating of over an 8 from any of my respected critics. That must have hurt PS3 sales. They are desperate for some strong exclusives. In my opinion, the Blu-ray player that everyone knocks them for including is actually the main feature that is keeping them afloat. Don't get me wrong, I want the PS3 to succeed at least on a nominal level to provide stimulating competition for the industry as a whole, but with its sales figures so low and the production costs of "A-title" games these days being so high, an exclusive is looking extremely unlikely. I believe the only reason Unreal Tournament lll is "Time Exclusive" on the PS3 is because it would have been overlooked by 360 owners through the sheer volume of highly anticipated titles that it would have been released along side of. Early 2008 will see UTlll do quite well on the 360. I'm buyin'! I hope the PS3 picks up.

    also vestalboy their new games now run at 60 fps, so your comment is kinda invalid, when the first games came out for the 360 they ran at 30 fps, people did not critisize it though as there was no other console to compare it with. like I said the ps3 is expensive and difficult to make games for, once the hardware is optimised you will be asking' "why does the 360 only do 60fps when the ps3 does 100? and why do all the games look better on the ps3?" whell with first party games anyway, the fact it is cheaper to make games on the 360 means 3rd party games will be ports for a while yet on the ps3, which is why I only buy exclusives on the ps3 and multiplatformers on the 360.

    wii at the top again! no suprise it is a great console! a bit of a dissapointment for the ps3 thoough. I dont think it can sell more consoles overall now but as soon as there is a real price cut and developers optimise the console we will reguarly see more ps3's being sold than 360's, because the ps3 can produce better graphics by far we all know that, its inevitable, but for now I am playing my 360 more with so many great games coming out. problem is loads of good ps3 and wii games are also coming out, where will I find the time to play all these great games!

    All I got to say is look for another price cut from MS ( 6.3 million ) before x-mas if halo cant pull in more sells.....Whats happening to the PS3 only 1.75 million? That has to be the biggest DISAPPOINTMENT of the whole industry! Hats off to the Wii,( 4 million ) and still going strong but starting to slow, due to more advanced games coming to 360 and PS3, we all know what they are. Can't seem to understand this shortage thing that Nin reps try to play off, cause I can buy one any where?

    Like many people I'm sick of all this blind loyalty by fanboys. I think any true gamer can admit that there are excellent games on each system. I only have a wii but when I get enough money I will definitely buy a PS3 and 360. Each system has different pluses and minuses and each system also has a collection of must play games. Personally I think people should read this article and be happy at success of the gaming industry rather than using it as a jump off point for their fanboy ravings.
