The Entertainment Software Association has named former Sony Computer Entertainment chief Ken Kutaragi as the 2008 Champion Honoree for its annual Nite to Unite for Kids charity event. Fingered as the cause for both the dramatic rise and current woes of the PlayStation brand, Kutaragi retired from his position as SCE chairman and CEO in June. Previous honerees include LucasArts founder George Lucas, GameStop's Dan DeMatteo, and Electronic Arts' Bing Gordon.
Since its inception in 1999, the ESA's NTU event has raised more than $7.8 million for children's charities such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and the Starlight Starbright Foundation. Chairing this year's event will be Microsoft's Robbie Bach, Sony's Jack Tretton, and Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime. The Nite to Unite for Kids will be held at the Westin St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco on October 17, with tickets starting at $500.

That is too early to say. At this very moment people are waiting for the killer titles or/and eventual price drop. If only 10% of former PS2 owners decide to buy the system it would already increase almost 12 millions in sale. Neither nintendo or xbox have this kind of people who are waiting to buy the PS3 the at the right moment.
I'll give my full respect to Kutaragi for delivering the best consoles ever made, which neither Gates or Miyamoto deserves. If you look at sales and shipments, both PS and PS2 sold 100 million in the matter of 13 years. That's more than all nintendo TV consoles combined for 24 years, including Wii. Another thing in need of praise is how he managed to lure out more adult gamers which made gaming more accessible for people who didn't feel like gaming seriously on TV consoles.

HXCDEW is right, dont give him minuses just because you own a 360 and see all things sony a sin."
Believing that people that bash him are 360 owners shows your fanboyism.
HXCDEW is right, dont give him minuses just because you own a 360 and see all things sony a sin. chances are alll of you own something made by sony, mp3 player, tv's, computers, laptops ect... that man did revolutionise gaming, he created things that otherwise would not have been done, which would make consoles much less advanced. MS most likely took pointers from the ps2's success and that is why they do so well. dont get angry at what I say, there is no denying it he made the next generation of gaming new and exciting.
dont be a fanboy, just accept that he did good and made many smart decisions, thats it, fact.
Playstation brand became popular because of his work.
Playstation 3 is doing so bad because of his "Slowness".
you can love him or hate him, but he's all business ... give him credit!
He didn't get greedy. He got a bad case of Hubris aka Victory Disease. He thought Sony was going to be the place to be no matter how much they sold the PS3 for and believed no one would jump ship. After the chinks in the armor started to show he tried his "120 FPS" lie believing people would fall for it much like they did for his "100 million polygons" lie when the PS2 launched. His arrogance and complaicancy took Sony from first to last in the space of one season cycle. He may have been a great visionary that turned a negative into a huge positive with turning the SNES CD into the PS, but he killed his clout in the industry when he suffered from the same Hubris that brought down Nintendo in the mid-90s.
Is that a metallic PS3?
I give props to him on the PS1 and PS2 but he just got plain greedy with the PS3.
it is good to give back!

It's true Sony wouldn't be where it is today without him, but Sony wouldn't be where it is today if it weren't for what he did.
Oh Kutaragi... you just couldn't fade away without having one last cash-in publicity could you.
I fail to see how he could be named the Champion Honeree considering (as GameSpot so bluntly put it), he's also blamed for the woes of the PS3. Indeed, he might be worthy for the PS2 and making games mainstream, but surely there are better people to choose in this generation/age.
er.... gratz........(pause)..... NOT!
Well, congrats to Kutaragi!
he brought the PlayStation into this world, now he's taking it out
I respect Ken Kutaragi, that's why it's so sad to see the PS3 bomb as it has, and him leave the scene before the ship sinks. Anyhow, there's some great videos on YouTube, see hyperlinks bellow...
History of the PlayStation [part 1/4]
History of the PlayStation [part 2/4]
History of the PlayStation [part 3/4]
History of the PlayStation [part 4/4]
That's a really great story in those videos, and that's why it's sad to see the PS3 so far behind in this console era.

wow, so many people love to talk crap about or praise the PS3, whenever they have the chance, but the simple fact they left this article alone just leaves me to believe most of those people don't know much of anything
