Capcom shares hit five-year high

The Japanese publisher's stock has risen 33 percent so far this year.

Capcom, developer and publisher of the Resident Evil franchise, today saw its shares hit a five-year high, closing at 2,855 yen (approx $25) on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Bloomberg reports that this was the highest close for the company since September 26, 2002, and that the climb was due to "expectation sales," meaning the assumption that upcoming Capcom Wii games will boost earnings. Capcom expects annual sales to rise 11 percent after doubling the number of its Wii titles to six.

The Osaka-based company's stock has risen 14 percent in the last two days alone, totalling a 33 percent gain in the last year, compared to an 8.8 percent decline in the benchmark Topix index.

Capcom was founded in 1979 and has published franchises including the Resident Evil (Biohazard in Japan), Devil May Cry, and Phoenix Wright series, along with critically acclaimed titles, including Okami, from its now defunct Clover Studio.

Wow, the one time I actually care about money/profit news!! Great for capcom. It's sad when once great companies die hard. (I'm from the unforgetible nintendo era)

Great news for Capcom. Now lets hope that this leads to them announcing Okami for release on Wii . . . it's an easy buck and it'd open the game up to a whole new audience! And that game definitely deserves it.

I can't wait for RE: Umbrella Chronicles either.

This is no surprise. Capcom and Konami are the world's greatest third party developers hands down. With out them there is not alot to be excited about.

"Franzkill

neoyamaneko what do you know about games? Chaos Legion was actually good"

Then again, there are people that defend Catwoman and Bratz as good movies.

CL was a waste of $10 when I bought it in a bargain bin a few years ago. And check Metacritic....both versions of the game are not thought of in any high regard.

Gr33dy83, nah you know, I agree with you, I still want the Street Fighter series to keep it's 2D roots, also they should take a look at themselves because they made the worst fighting game ever made in my opinion, I don't know about the others) that game was a total disaster, and I also want them to get the Marvel License back, screw EA & Activision!!!!

Look up the Street Fighter EX series sometime. You'll see what happens when Street Fighter goes 3D.

DangerT3 ya right those games in my eyes brought capcom to the business, hahaha yeah street figher does need something new, they didn't evolve like mortal kombat did they just stayed 90's graphics, but i guess it would be weird due to the type of fighting and moves in street fighter to put em into 3D

"They didn't both games bombed in Japan."

It's old news that success in North America alone is more than enough to make a game hugely profitable.

Wow, they didn't mention Street Fighter & Megaman, those were the 2 of the series that actually gave the company a lot of recognition way before Resident Evil and Devil May Cry, that's why I don't like this Market... And everytime they interview a representative or developer, they never ask them if they ever gonna make a whole new Street Fighter... I mean, I love Street Fighter 2 and the idea for the Super Street Fighter 2 HD Remix, but come on Capcom, it's too much Street Fighter 2 already, give your fans something NEW, I mean it!!!!

Capcom! Rember this when Resident Evil 5, 6, 7 and Devil May Cry 4, 5 comes out and A new next gen Megaman gets developed. It was because of the 360 this happened.

meimnobody,
It WAS absolutely Dead Rising and Lost Planet that started this Gens uphill climb for Capcoms success. BOTH of these games OUTSOLD even Capcoms projected estimated sales by more than 2X, so if the games came out in America first, which they did, and the sales in America were over twice what they expected, which they were, how in the world would you think that they didn't turn a huge profit after any given marketing? Marketing is always factored into sales returns. Come on. Oh, and Dead Rising sold over half a million copies in TWO WEEKS!!! IN AMERICA ALONE, making it the fastest selling Xbox360 game at the time, so who cares about the WORLDWIDE sales of the Wii's edition of RE4. http://digitalbattle.com/2006/08/30/dead-rising-breaks-us-sales-records/

"No, it couldnt be that they hit gravy with Dead Rising and Lost Planet on 360."

They didn't both games bombed in Japan. The ad campaigns cost tens of millions dollars each game and the games didn't make up the costs incured from development as well as advertising.

Resident Evil 4 wii edition has sold over half a million copies worldwide while capcom was expecting lifetime sales of the game to be half a million worldwide if I recall correctly.

No, it couldnt be that they hit gravy with Dead Rising and Lost Planet on 360. No, according to this article, it's the upcoming Wii support that really hit shares home. Gimme a break with this Wii stuff already, the games to console ratio are less than 1 game per system sold. Capcom are ready to start moving on to DMC4 and RE5, that's why the shares went up. Real Next Gen games are where software sales will come from, as well as proven successful franchises, not Wii faddery.

There is a reason that Capcom has been around for as long as they have, they know games. Sure they have had some real crap games in the past but virtually every company does. Awesome job Capcom.

I hope they decide to make sequels to Lost Planet and Dead Rising. I'm also looking forward to DMC4 and RE:UC. Though, it's sad that Clover Studios is gone, because I don't think Capcom is going to make much of their IP (like Viewtiful Joe or Okami).
