Command & Conquer now a free download

Original Command & Conquer game up for grabs to celebrate 12th annual anniversary.

The original version of real-time strategy classic Command & Conquer, first released in 1995, is currently available to download for free from GameSpot in celebration of the 12th anniversary of the series.

The game download, which is fully compatible with Windows XP, is the same version as included in the Command & Conquer: The First Decade pack.

The game, also sometimes called Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn, is set at the end of the 20th century, after a meteorite crash landing produces a new substance called Tiberium. Two groups, the Global Defense Initiative and the Brotherhood of Nod, fight for the control of these powerful crystals, in what escalates into a global war. Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars was released in March on PC, and an expansion pack, Kane's Wrath, is due sometime in the second quarter of 2008.

A statement on the official site also promises more goodies throughout the month of September, as "each week as we plan to celebrate and remember 12 years of Command & Conquer in a number of different ways."

@MCH: You have to burn those two disc images onto CD's, insert those CD's in the drive, and THEN try to play it.

What in the world?! This download is useless, and I spent hours downloading it and it just gives you two huge files you can't open wih anything and a word document that doesn't help you in any way. It tells you to insert the CD!

One of the greatest games ever. The cinematic ending for Nod is amazing. If you're GDI, be sure to waste Kane with the Giant Laser Cannon for the hidden ending.

Reminds me of the free Grand Theft Auto download. Nobody would purchase it retail, so why not make it available for free for everyone?

This is such a great attitude on the part of developers and publishers, I hope more follow suit. C'mon, Lucasarts!

This was one of the first games I played on my computer. This, Red Baron, and Aces over Europe.

I'd be super excited for it being free now, but I already have a working original copy, and the First Decade re-release.
