EALA's latest is Airborne on XBLA; Rein shoots down demo rumors; Lord of the Rings MMORPG free for seven days; British and Chilean indie devs' new projects.

MOH: Airborne demo lands on XBL, contest announced
With Medal of Honor: Airborne's September 4 release less than a week away, Electronic Arts has put up a demo of the game on Xbox Live. Weighing in at a hefty 973MB, the demo will feature the first combat mission from the game. It recreates the 82nd Airborne division's invasion of Sicily from a US Army paratrooper's point of view. MOH: Airborne will also be released for the PC next week, with a PlayStation 3 edition to follow in November.

EA also announced that it will be staging an MOH: Airborne contest on Xbox Live called Medal of Honor: Operation Live Jump. The "operation" is in fact a 72-hour sweepstakes beginning on September 7 in which Airborne leaderboard winners receive a prize every hour. Details and registration instructions can be found on the official Xbox.com site.

No prerelease PS3 UT3 demo
PlayStation 3 owners hoping to kick the tires of Unreal Tournament 3 before it arrives this holiday season are apparently out of luck. During last week's Leipzig Games Convention, Epic Games vice president Mark Rein told Eurogamer that his studio has no plans to release a sample level of the game for Sony's console in 2007. "[It's] what we told Microsoft last year. They wanted a demo for Gears of War, and we said, 'You've got a choice--you can have the demo this year or the game this year.'" Retailers are currently listing the game as arriving in mid-November for the PC and PS3; the game will also ship for the Xbox 360 in early 2008.

Turbine launches seven-day Lord of the Rings Online trial
Earlier this year, the massively multiplayer online role-playing game The Lord of the Rings Online: The Shadows of Angmar got off to a solid start, selling 172,000 copies in seven weeks. In an effort to further bolster the game's subscriber base, developer Turbine, Inc. announced today a seven-day free trial of the game for new players. Those interested can go to trial.lotro.com to sign up for the trial, which will allow players to keep their characters at the end of the period if they become subscribers.

Second WiiWare game announced
Though Nintendo announced WiiWare back in June, hardly any studios have announced original casual games for the Wii. Today, little-known British shop Medaverse announced on its forums that it is working on a WiiWare title. Called Gravitronix, the game is an arena-based action/battle game for one to four players that will arrive in early 2008, according to Medaverse. It is the second WiiWare game to be announced, following Plattchen: Twist 'n' Paint from Austrian developer Bplus.

Chilean studio says "si" to Source
Though it's been somewhat overshadowed by Epic Games' widely used Unreal Engine 3, Valve's Source Engine is still attracting some licensees. This week, Chilean developer ACE announced Zeno Clash, a new game using the toolset. Like most other Source-based games, it will be a first-person action title, albeit set in "a punk fantasy world." No platforms other than the PC have been announced for the game, which is due out sometime next year.

    @Sydwynder - LOL, "craptacular", that's probably the best one word to describe the new MOH game. And yes, the first 10 seconds to pick where you go is the only thing that makes this game unique.

    Oh man, just played the MoH demo. Talk about a weak , weak game!!!! Anybody who has played COD 1,2 or3 need not apply because MoH is so craptacular it should not have been made. Yeah the parachute thing is cool, but it lasts for all of 10 seconds. One gimmick does not a great game make. Seriously, if you were considering this game, go download the demo first and you'll see how weak and busted the gameplay is. Then you can thank me for saving you 60 bucks.

    I hope there's great stuff on WiiWare. It could become the ultimate download service this generation, in conjunction with the Virtual Console's heavy lineup. Now if they'd just lower those prices a hair...

    Some of the things I didn't like in the MOH demo was that the sight feature was good for cover firing but offered no use otherwise as it limited mobility to a fixed position. I thought the AI was pretty bad, often ignoring more than they should and giving me too much time to slaughter without any skill. Plus, the volume of guns being fired was really really low. Other than that, the game looks great, but barely holds a candle to Call of Duty for being a quality game overall.

    -MOH Airborne didn't play like a fantastic game in the demo, just a good game, but that's alright.

    -On the UT3 demo thing, well there wasn't a demo for Gears of War so....

    -Sorry, but WiiWare is gonna suck. Stick to crappy emulations with no extra content at ridiculously overpriced prices. People apparently buy into that crap. Goes to show you how dumb the Wii demographic actually is.

    Epic are such copouts, they want your money before you realise your'e bored of their game.

    2k managed to put out a demo for Bioshock with no hassle, so dont make phoney excuses Epic, if your not gonna put out a demo because you know you will actually lose sales because of it, just say so.

    I disagree with everything you said,

    Epic is one of the few devs who really know what their doing. If it wasn't for epic..Bioshock wouldn't exsist since it uses Unreal Technology...just like alot of good games use.

    Why no UT demo?? They want to finish their build for the full game..and I know, Epic knows, theres people out there who love UT, and realize how much epic has done for gaming in general. I'm sure Epic doesnt want kids like Diablobasher to play it for free, since its pretty gory. LOL
    So your comments are pretty much foolish and anyone who agrees is just letting everyone know they have poor judgment as well.

    I absolutely agree with your statement. There is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON why a game cannot have a demo of it. How hard is it to rip out the first level, battle, fight...whatever and offer it as a demo?!?! MOH:Airborne did it with the first battle as a demo and based on that, I will in all probability buy that game. Epic thinks because of their success with GoW that they can do whatever they want. It's too bad that the majority of gamers are SHEEP and will buy Epic's future games no matter what. On the other hand, I downloaded the demo to Heavenly Sword and found that the demo was essentially a couple of button presses and it ended. Uh....I need a little more substance in order to make a informed decision instead of a demo lasting about two minutes. Now based on this alone, I might NOT buy the game. If you can't give me 15 minutes of gameplay, then I am to assume that the game will be quite short and not worth the 60 bucks.

    Remember, it's quite easy to make a statement by 'voting with your wallet'.

    I think Epic made the right choice of not releasing the demo for Gears, so I wouldn't expect one for UT3.

    LOTRo is really worth checking out if you haven't already. I came from playing SWG and WoW and LOTRO was real joy to play from the beginning. If you are into Tolkien, like the movies, or just want to play a really fun MMORPG, you should check out the trial.

    Wow, epic slapped M$ with that one.

    I'm sorry, but I don't see how that's a slap in any way. They told Sony what they told M$, demos take time, and either you take the time for the demo and delay the game, or you just put out the game. They aren't dissing anybody here. This stuff takes time. Hell, the DOA4 Demo came out, like, months after the game came out.

    I thought MOH was actually pretty cool, as I just jumped up on the roofs, ran around shooting people from above, completely the objectives WAY too easily, as they weren't intended to be finished the way I did them. Also, why is COD4 so huge right now?? I mean, it's not even COD really, it's just a war game in the present time made by the developer who made COD. If they had called it something else, nobody would have noticed, but if they threw COD onto it, then it would immediately be recognized as that game made by that dev. It doesn't even look that incredible. It's just a modern warefare game... what's so special. I'm to expect COD controls, but on a Modern Warefare game. Woot. Maybe I'm just not into the whole, "It's MODERN dude! Like, in today's day and age! And it plays like Call of Duty! But Modern!" Yeah, that's like if the developers to Killzone made a present day or past kind of game, but called it Killzone 3. Sorry for the rambling, I just think it's stupid people don't think calling it COD 4 is stupid. Just call it something else, but add in "Made by Infinity Ward" to the end of the title if you really wanted people to know.

    Does anybody understand how much effort goes into making a demo?? It's not as simple as, "Take this map, put it online." It's more of an organization of all the data that goes into the demo, so that it isn't more than a gig or 2, then you have to make sure that it works properly, then you have to compress the data specifically for downloading off the PSN network, then you activate the servers that go into making the game run, unless it runs on players own modems, and finally you have your demo. It takes lots of development time and lots of bug testing, as if there's a bug in you demo, like the game stops running, people aren't going to be that secure about your game. It's like the Halo 3 Beta. It was 3 maps, with like 6 or 7 gametypes.... 3 and a half months went into making it. 3. 1/2. It's not a weekend thing, they get together, have some soda, put the data into one place, then just upload it, it takes tons of organization and tons of work to make sure it runs properly.

    "Playing as a chicken" was not advertising as the best new feature. Turbine made the mistake of mentioning it in their Book 10 announcement, and WoW lovers everywhere jumped on it, saying that Turbine was wasting their time. The Book 10 patch came out, and chicken play ended up being a small bit of text in what was a massive update, with the patch notes being 4 pages long. Just like it was 6 weeks earlier. And just like it will be again when Book 11 comes out in six weeks.

    WoW does the same thing by releasing new areas, except they make you buy an expansion for it.
