White PS2 coming to America

Limited-edition console will come bundled with SingStar Pop and be available in November.

In May 2005, Sony Computer Entertainment opened up Japanese gamers' color options with a slimmed-down PlayStation 2 with a ceramic white console. Later that year, Sony gave Japanese gamers a third choice with a silver line of PS2 slims. And while Sony eventually extended these colors to Europe, it wasn't until October 2006 that American gamers were able to pick up the silver console. Now it appears North Americans will be getting a crack at the white slimline PS2s as well--temporarily, at least.

Sony announced today that a limited edition, ceramic white PlayStation 2 bundled with SingStar Pop is headed to the US and Canada. Aside from the color change, the white PS2 will be the same as Sony's other slimline consoles. Ceramic white seems to be Sony's hardware color du jour. At this year's E3 Media & Business Summit, the console maker unveiled a Star Wars-themed PlayStation Portable in the same hue.

Released in April, SingStar Pop is the second installment in Sony's popular karaoke series, which makes its debut on the PlayStation 3 in November. The game lets players belt out tunes by the likes of Alicia Keys, Ashlee Simpson, and The All-American Rejects in both single- and multiplayer modes. The game was developed by Sony's London Studio and is rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older.

Along with the white console and a copy of SingStar Pop, the bundle will include two USB microphones. It will be available this November in North America and retail for $149.99 in the US and C$159.99 in Canada.

    One question to Sony: Why?!

    Why not a white PS3?????? and SingStar Pop is also coming to the PS3 in November........kind of pointless.

    @Fisher-Price: I'm sure Sony wants to be number one this generation as they were the last and if the PS3 has the longevity that the PS2 has had and is still having then the PS3 has a chance to win the console war. In my opinion it is too early to see a winner. The Wii and 360 both have had a strong start though. As far as putting all their efforts into the PS3... I'm sure they are putting lots of effort into the PS3 but the PS2 is still in demend as well. Why focus solely on one console when you can sell two?

    A lot of people on this board are saying that these arn't going to sell well. I disagree.The PS2 is arguably the most successful console in history and is still selling nicely today. These PS2's will sell out no problem. If you read the first paragraph it is clear Sony has tested sales for both the Silver and White PS2's in other countries as well as the Silver in North America so I'm sure they wouldn't release it here if they didn't think it would sell.

    You can understand why Sony made this - this is their only GAMING platform lol

    Anyways - If everyone wasn't saving up for the ps3, they sure would of gotten this one.

    I reckon that its all to do with battling the Wii- making the ps2 white and all. They stick things like a singing microphone in for free so they have some gimmicks to head up next to the Wii. Lets face it, its their only chance at fighting the Wii at the moment.

    They should release this in the UK - because at least that will have an Emotion engine in it

    I really love the PS2 and may buy this...plus, I miss all my PS1 games that I can't play anymore (old systems breakdown eventually...)

    man I have still got my same ps2 since launch. kinda beat up now (its not the slim version either) and the cover bit for the disk tray fell off but I fixed it! sorry sony but my ps2 is sill going strong and now I have a ps3 so no thanks.

    Dude that is awsome now I hav eto buy 2 PS2 silver and white, but white will definetly be first except that it comes with that dumb game oh well it is still $150 prety nice price thanx Sony, now all you have t od ois get the PS3 in white!!! so we can have black and white at least I would like that

    I'm not so much into colours and I already have my original PlayStation 2. This will most likely appeal to the much younger audience who pick consoles by their colours.

    A new PS2???? WHO CARES????? Actually lostn, the first white consule... since you included handhelds on your list... Was the gameboy color! And if you think the PS1 was white when it first came out.... Then the original Gameboy and the Famicon were white too. I'm color blind, and even I know the PS1 was Grey when it came out... The white one was the PSX, the redesign! Look it up, cause I just did to be sure. The first consule to be white, atleast older then everything you mentioned, was the gameboy.

    To the idiot talking about how the PS2 copied the Wii on it's color thing, the Wii copied the iPod, since the iPod was one of the first thing to have the fiberglass like white color.

    On the whole package as a whole, the PS2 should just come out for $100, in black, silver, and white, with an extra controller, and a memroy card, if they want to try and take some Wii sales for as long as they can. They come out with some game/accessory bundles like something for the EyeToy, Guitar Hero, DDR, and Sing Star, to get the casual audience that the Wii gets.

    Don't package it with the console, package it separately, so people can pick it up for the PS2 or the PS3. Just throw in a PS2 controller - USB adapter for the packages that using PS2 controller based accessories like Guitar Hero.

    It also outsells the Xbox 360 month after month. Only twice in the 21 months that the Xbox 360 has been out has it actually outsold the PS2. This is excuseable in the case of the PS3 since it's a $600 console that is far beyond the price range of most gamers. But for the supposed best current gen console, it's an embarassment for the 360 to be outsold by a last gen console.

    I don't know how to tell you this, but white came out long before Nintendo. PSP was white long before the Wii, and the fat PS2 was available in white before the Wii, as was the slim PS2 in white. The dreamcast was white. The PSone was white. Ipods are white.

    Lay off the kool-aid.

    If Sony really wants the PS3 to succeed, they should just phase out the PS2, not bring more attention to it. The PS2 still brings them a lot of money, but they need to drop it and move on to their future investment. It's essentially competing with itself as people who buy a PS2 right now likely won't be buying a PS3 anytime soon.

    LexLas, they are still selling because PS2 are affordable, has hundreds of great games, and the only equal counterpart to it is the 360.

    with that said I like to remind people of the old Xbox, now when you think about it, what is here TODAY that is almost exactly a repeat of history?

    The ps3 :p

    So they're putting their money into the PS2 since that is outselling the PS3, and the only source of funding. Well not only, just the most.

    Add this to the HUGE list of things that Sony is doing, besides getting good games on the PS3.... They are doing Foldng@Home, Working on the 3D PS3, The tivo type thing, PSP to PS3 connecting, everything but the good games... shame.

    Zz... huh wha? New PS2? Is it the year 2001 already? After seeing all the way cool colors that didnt come to the US who cares anymore. Maybe they wont mess things up if/when the PSP2 and PS4 rolls around( and you know all to well thats asking too much).

    I'd say it's too late, but PS2's are still selling on par with "current" consoles. I still think it's weird Sony would split focus between the old and the new, but it was the biggest console ever and still has enough heat to push titles.
