Command & Conquer 3 expanding in early 2008

EA announces the first expansion to its popular 360 and PC RTS is coming next year, and will focus on villain Kane.

Early this morning, the first Battlecast video report premiered on the official Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars Web site. After a fair amount of on-camera hamming, the Battlecast's hosts used the program to announce Command and Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath, the first expansion pack for the popular Electronic Arts game. Due out early next year, it will focus on the titular villain, who leads the shadowy, quasi-religious global corporate/military organization known as the Brotherhood of Nod.

"It's all about Kane," one of the anchors proclaimed. "It chronicles his rise back to power after the second Tiberium War and continues all the way through C&C3." The expansion will also take the player through the third Tiberium War and beyond, and will feature actor Joe Kucan reprising his role as Kane.

In a video interview, producer Jim Vessale described the expansion in some detail. He said Kane's Wrath will once again sport high-definition live-action cutscenes, and then showed clips of actor Josh Holloway (TV's Lost) and Kucan. "It will also be introducing a few new characters," the producer cryptically promised. He went on to talk about the expansion's focus on the "global domination metagame," which he described as the board game "Risk on steroids." The game will allow for strategic moves and then segue into tactical real-time combat on the battlefield.

Vessale went on to promise that Kane's Wrath would introduce a number of new units, powers, and upgrades. It would also split each of the game's three primary factions into two subfactions with their own unique units.

Both the PC and Xbox 360 versions of Kane's Wrath will be released simultaneously, though no specific date is yet set for either title. Vessale said the expansion will also introduce the PC's "radial interface" to the Xbox 360 game (pictured) to allow for faster issuing of orders to units in the game.

For more, read GameSpot's exclusive interview with Mike Verdu, executive producer of Kane's Wrath, at EA's Los Angeles studio.

Will the original be neccessary for the xBox 360 version to run, or will this expansion be a stand-alone game?

It almost seems to me that C&C3: Kane's Wrath is doing what Dawn of War: Dark Crusade and the Total War series has been doing for ages with its Global Domination mode. I'm not saying thats a bad thing, in fact, I do like that style of play, since it isn't as linear as a campaign mode. I do hope there is a sub-campaign mode though and the Global Domination thing is separate. In terms of Josh Holloway and Joe "Kane" Kucan reprising their roles, thats fantastic, since they're both brilliant with their roles. (Kucan, legend, period!!!)

I do reckon that they will do what Bethesda Softworks did with Oblivion for the 360 and use the download facility, which works very well. If they don't, then someone has problems at EA... wait a sec, its EA. Of course they won't

HELL YES! This looks to be everything C&C3 should have been and more!

I wish the EA haters would drop it. The C&C series has been consistently good, except for Generals which was under a different dev team to the one it is currently under.

Hopefully this expansion will explain why the Nod campaign had such a bad ending.

@Robinvd: Zero Hour was never a true C&C game anyway, just a creation by EA to get some money out of the C&C name.

No Surprises here. I personally thought C&C 3 was one of the best games EA made. It atleast stayed through to franchise. Only things missing were:

1: Westwood logo (I know it turned to EALA)

    2: Interactive Installation.

Awesome! I really hate it though, I just cant get into C&C3's gameplay. I love everything about it (OMG KANE is STILL SWEET), but the actual gameplay is faster than even Red Alert 2 (lol superweapons shooting me 8 min in?), and its got plenty of bugs/exploits, not to mention "dominate stratigy syndrome" (aka there is only one good strat that everyone uses).

Classic Gamespot with having a ton of haters in the comments. Um dudes its freakin C&C and i love it. Love the old school style Tiberium wars which is way better then the retard generals/zero hr. Tank rushes are a staple of C&C so why the F yall trashing on that aspect? We in offcourse sequal mode. Can;t wait to get sc2 which is a exact clone of orginal with new graghics buts omg it will be awesome times. Expansion is due for tiberium wars which i will def be getting my hands on. The C&C genre is in the same category of the final fantasies, maddens, etc etc. If you loved when it first started you will always continue to love it. Even this kane expansion looks like a sequel. wasn;t red alert 2 yuri's revenge in the same category of a villain expansion to the game? Yap. I love the classic style C&C and this will coninue in its trend

GregK should walk up behind Kane and blow his brains out in one of the FMVs just like Kane to Seth. "Power shifts quickly in the Brotherhood!"

C&C 3 sucked....way to easy and simple compared to other new PC RTSs like Supcom,CoH, WiC etc. Dumbed down for the general 360 crowd and controller controls...

  • MuscleCarMan

    Posted Aug 14, 2007 10:32 pm PT

eh i prefer the old games, pre generals. This one has none of the flavor of the old westwood games and definitely feels like its from the Mc Donald's of video gaming, EA.

    Posted Aug 14, 2007 10:21 pm PT

Um if the expansion is available in retail stores for the 360 but you don't need the original game to play it does that mean it will be 60 bucks?

...awful lot for an expansion but if they charge less you are essentially getting the original game for a discount + the expansion.

Or maybe the expansion on the 360 won't include the original campaigns...stlil kinda wierd for an expansion.

since the original C&C3 is still in retail beta mode and is a tank spamfest I can easily see this expansion going the way of BFME2 ROTWK....no support as soon as EA has your money

I played Tiberium Wars and i was quite disappointed with it. I played C&C Generals for several years clocking in about 100+ hours. So, as I'm sure you know I was very happy when the new C&C game came out. But I installed this game and played it for about 8 hours and...honestly, I didn't like it, even though I REALLY wanted to like this game.
