Aliens fighting Predator on PSP

Rebellion Developments bringing third-person action adventure movie tie-in to Sony's portable this November.

Ever since Ridley Scott's Alien (1979) and John McTiernan's Predator (1987) debuted on the silver screen, they have proved to be fertile ground for product offshoots. The two franchises have spawned a mélange of games, action figures, and comic books, with a new wave of merchandising hitting after every subsequent movie sequel and spin-off. One of the most notable of those spin-offs was the Aliens vs. Predator comic book series in 1992, which took the two franchises to their logical conclusion by pitting the two world-consuming forces against one another in an alien-on-alien free-for-all slashfest.

Though that setting has lent itself quite nicely to the gaming sector, the first film portraying the now-classic feud, Paul W.S. Anderson's Alien vs. Predator (2004), came and went without the seemingly requisite tie-in. However, that oversight has been resolved for AVP2, which is set to hit the box office in December. Sierra Entertainment announced today it would be partnering with 20th Century Fox on Aliens vs. Predator, a third-person action adventure game exclusively for the PlayStation Portable. The game will predate the movie by a month, as it is slated for release this November.

Diverging from the first-person shooter action of the comic book-inspired Aliens vs. Predator games, Aliens vs. Predator on the PSP decks out players solely in Predator dreadlocks, and then turns them loose on both the Alien hordes and human fodder. Players will have access to the Predator's grab bag of high-tech gadgetry, including classic favorites such as the signature cloaking device and wrist blades. In addition to a single-player campaign, the game will feature a co-op multiplayer mode. Sierra did not mention whether the game's multiplayer functionality would be online or ad hoc.

Aliens vs. Predator on the PSP will be developed by Rebellion Developments. The British-based studio is no stranger to the franchise, as it was behind the original Aliens versus Predator game on the Atari Jaguar in 1995, as well as the subsequent PC remake in 1999.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, ask capcom if they can make the arcade Aliens Vs Predator version on the psp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As for AvP PSP the people who is making this game should do very well since they were the same people in development of the AvP on Jaguar, which to this date is one of the best made AvP game.

even though movie games have always been horrible, i think this one may acctually have a chance. if they base it off the movie it will not be good.so hopefully they dont go there.

I agree with darth-revan, Monolith Productions did create the better AVP game with AVP2. I also thought Tron 2.0 was pretty cool.

It'll probably suck, but with a bit of luck it'll be like The Warriors, which was an awesome, and very cheep ($20 at launch) licensed game.

The thing that I know is that the AvP games so far that monolith created (F.E.A.R., condemned, shogo, matrix online) have all been really great games, thats still fun to play today (online that is, in fact its still on my computer =D). I have a really good feeling that since all the avp games that monolith didnt design have sucked, this will be among them. Until gearbox (brothers in arms, halo PC, Half-Life Op Force) and Obsidian (ex black isle devs. made Kotor2, Neverwinter Nights 2, and the fallout games before) finishes their games, AvP games will probably suck.

Alien Vs Predator has been a good subject for Videogames. Not always well executed but fun at times. Hopefully the PSP version will be decent. I would like to see this on a better system though. PS3 and Xbox 360? The movie is not exactly gonna win a academy Award, The game is not going to be game of the year either. It could be alright though. Alien Vs Predator Extinction was so-so at best. So maybe this will be better?

You just can't beat AvP 2 on the PC. If they successfully ported that game, that would be a result. But its a formula that is wearing thin.

Any Alien or Predator fan will be suspicious about ANOTHER Alien v Predator game. It took several games to actually make one good one, and its usually downhill from there.

Do yourself a favour, sell your psp, get a cheap pc and buy AvP 2 from eBay. If you like alien v predator, then you WILL be satisfied with this option.

But a third-person, one analog stick, limited graphics AvP game is not what the series needs, imo.

If AvP is to be invigorated - bring it onto the PC, ps3 and 360.

The first PC game based off AvP was great and scared the crap out of me from time to time. I can still hear the shrieks of aliens as they jump on top of my head. If this game comes close to that I'll definitely be picking it up.

Anyone who's played the original Jaguar AVP knows the Rebellion knows what their doing when it comes to this franchise. They are probably the only ones that have done the name justice. I have the same hopes as BlackIceJoe that they do what they did before and provide some intense gameplay. Don't write this one off too soon.

The original AVP and its excellent sequel for the PC are now considered classics, but I doubt it that THIS new game would really be a true successor.

the need to make the first movie into a game, with strong political overtones about the status of the predators as illegal immigrants staring jesse the body ventura, and arnold schwartzneger in a rousing political debate, and killing people with miniguns.

We need a true next-gen Predator game, my friend loves the movies and is even trying to make his own costume. I'd love to see and play a game based on the series, or even AvP.

  • SpareJesus

    Posted Aug 14, 2007 8:19 pm PT

Games are only good when they're not based on movies.

In very rare circumstances, they work..nevertheless. Why only make an AvP game where you play as the Predator? I could get AvP2 for the PC and have three times the fun (Alien, Marine, Predator), and generally, what I expect to be a much better game with an original (not based on the movie) storyline.

Are you serious? Alien Vs. Predator on the PSP as a game. That's well...uh...great. There has been few games that have aliens in them, one is Coded Arms, but anyway, that's good news.

  • En-GaGe

    Posted Aug 14, 2007 7:54 pm PT

hmmmm, do you think this also means that the movie will be more based on the predator as well? i know the last one was sorta. Its those fatcats in washington i tell ya never giving the aliens a break. Although you gotta admitt playin' as the predator would be more fun with the advanced weaponry and the possibilities and such.
