Q&A: Aussie Xbox head on 360 price cut

Xbox regional director for Australia and New Zealand David McLean on what effect the 360 price cut will have on sales down under, the whereabouts of the Elite and Halo 3 editions, and how many 360s have been sold so far.

Although it's been out in Australia for close to 17 months, the Xbox 360 received its first price reduction today, with the Pro system now retailing for A$579.95 and the Core selling for A$399.95. We spoke to Xbox regional director for Australia and New Zealand David McLean about how the new price points for the 360 will affect the console's position in the Australian gaming market.

GameSpot AU: Why did you decide to drop the price of the Xbox 360 now?

David McLean: We've held the price of the box for 17 months, which I think is the longest any console has held its price since launch. If you look at GfK Australia figures, you can see our momentum is still quite strong. But we're now getting the benefits of reductions of costs in manufacturing, and we want to make sure we pass that stuff on to our consumers as soon as we can. And also leading into what's going to be a blockbuster Christmas for us this year, we really want to give consumers as much reason as possible to move into the Xbox 360 business.

GS AU: Where do the new prices position your console in the Australian market now? Obviously, the Core is now the same price as a Nintendo Wii here.

DM: When you look at the Pro and you want high-definition gaming, I think the consumer now needs to look at those value propositions. They need to look at the games lineup we have coming this holiday, and they'll see that all of the major blockbusters are all on the Xbox, the real exclusives are on the Xbox this Christmas, and there will be 200 games available versus I think 40 or 45 on the PS3. I think you'll see on a games point of view we're well ahead. And now once again, we're offering all of these experiences at a really affordable price. So I think we will do really well during the holiday period against the PlayStation.

In relation to the Wii, the Wii's been very successful in terms of its unit sales, but when you look at what's actually driving the industry and you look at where consumers are buying, the majority of the revenue is still going to the Xbox 360 platform. Also, there's a six game average attach rate on the Xbox 360 versus the competition. We think this will continue, and we think that moving to that price point and doing some really interesting things around the Core--and we'll announce our strategy around Core in the time to come--we think we'll really push ourselves into that broader Wii market.

Our strategy was always to focus on the core and serious gamers. We think we've done a great job there, and the numbers support that. What we now need to do is start thinking about broadening our strategy, and this price movement is a component of that strategy.

GS AU: Do you think you'll take sales away from the Wii in Australia at this price point?

DM: I think that what will happen is we're going to move into that category somewhat more. It'll be interesting to see how big that category continues to be. But we now have the opportunity to play in that space and with this pricing and the broader titles available this holiday [on the 360], like Guitar Hero III, Rock Band, Viva Pinata: Party Animals, and Scene It!, I think we'll have more and more opportunity to move into that particular space.

GS AU: How long will you continue to sell the Core unit?

DM: There are no plans to discontinue the Core SKU. We've actually seen over the last few months that the Core has started to grow in terms of sales. If you look at some of the recent sales with mass merchants, the Core is doing really well for us. We're pretty pleased with the momentum that's been building on the Core, and it's still important for us to provide that level of choice to the customer. We have no intention of discontinuing the Core at this point. Furthermore, this price adjustment and some of the things we're planning to do with the product over the holidays will make it a more significant part of the business.

GS AU: So how is the 360 going now in terms of units sold in Australia?

DM: We've sold in Australia almost 200,00 units of the Xbox 360 since launch--in 17 months that's a really good result. We've got a record software attach rate of six games per console--that's better than anyone in the market. Our momentum continues to be strong. And we've sold more than one million 360 games in Australia.

GS AU: A few weeks ago Sony was saying that the PS3 was actually outselling the 360 and the Wii in Australia on a week-by-week basis. What's your opinion of that?

DM: I find it fascinating that they're saying that the PS3 is outselling anyone. You just have to look at the GfK numbers, and they clearly don't reflect that. The PS3 is running at a distant third at the moment in the market, in my view. So I don't think it makes much sense to make those comments. I think it's only going to be harder because as I see it in this market, the PS3 still hasn't dropped its price--it's still a A$1,000 console, albeit there's been some bundling activity there. But you're really comparing a A$1,000 console with a console that has more games, more peripherals, more accessories, more genres, at a price point that starts at A$399, with similar or better high-definition graphics.

GS AU: How will this price drop affect sales of the 360 this year?

DM: Obviously, we never really give out specific numbers about what our targets and forecasts are. But what I would say is our strong momentum will increase upon where it is today. The feedback we've had from retailers so far has been very positive, and their orders to distribution have increased. We're feeling very positive about where we are with them.

GS AU: Can you tell us when the Xbox 360 Elite console will make it to Australia?

DM: For Australia, we will be coming out with some announcements around Elite. It certainly is coming to our market--we're just currently trying to define our pricing and volume strategy on it. And obviously, with our decision to make the pricing announcements on Core and Pro now, we need to consider the knock-on effect for Elite. You're not going to be asked to wait very much longer. I think within the next week or so, we can give you details on what we're planning to do with Elite.

GS AU: And what about the special edition Halo 3 console?

DM: It's coming to our market as well. Once again, we just need to decide what the contents of the offering will be and make sure that we have the right pricing model for it. Information on that will also be coming in the next week.

GS AU: Finally, US consumers are starting to see HDMI ports on Pro consoles. Will Australian 360s be soon fitted out with those as well?

DM: Yes, we will--we'll start to see the same thing in Australia. We're just reviewing our inventory position and when that will start to flow into the market. No specific details to give you on it, but what's happening in other regions in the world will certainly happen in Australia.

GS AU: David McLean, thanks for your time.

I think the elite is losing it's value, since all consoles have HDMI now.

Now, it just has 100 more GB, but it costs $100. No ones going to buy it now.

this is good as hopefully it will make sony realise that they should still be selling the 20 and 60 gig models to be more competitive. their games could do with some price drops aswell. I got a ps3 but the price seems to be putting people off.

HK-47-M4 said: I can't believe Microsoft. At any moment they get, they will bash Sony and/or Nintendo. That's the reason why I'm not getting an Xbox 360. I'll just hand over my money to Sony and Nintendo as I contiue getting their games.

BTW Sony is going to have over 200 Games for the PS3 by the end of the year.

I say: When does MS bash Sony? They all do it in a competitive way but Sony bashes MS more than MS bashes Sony. It says stuff like world wide launches won't work and dissed the two SKU's idea (but then made 3 of it's own). If the only reason your not getting a console is because of trash talk then your too media run to care about the actual benefits of owning the console anyway. Thats pretty good to say they came out later, I wanna know how many Nintendo will have though cos they don't seem to have a strong line up.

HK-47-M4 says: "Ratchet and Clank owns Banjo and Kazooie 3. Warhawk is better looking than ace combat and it's online is funner. You don't have anything to go against Heavenly Sword. Lair got one bad review, you can hardly call it a bad game. I'd say your pretty much owned."
Syke: Final Fantasy 13 and Final Fantasy Versus 13 are also PS3 Exclusives. Fable is ok but it doesn't even compare to Final Fantasy, it won't stand a chance against one, let alone TWO Final Fantasies.

I say: Banjo kazooie 3 isn't out and neither is the new Ratchet and clank so you should wait for that judgement, I don't personally care though as I'm not a fan of platformers and so both would suck to me. Like PS3 we're getting DMC4, if your counting only exclusives We'll get Ninja gaiden 2 eventually and I would rather have Ninja gaiden sigma than heavenly sword to be honest. I like the look of Lair and it's my opinion that I'll like it so the bad reviews don't bother me. That isn't ownage by a long shot. FF13 looks pretty but the plot is gonna suck as usual (it's been going down since FF7 and FF8 in my opinion) and I think the feel of it won't impress me much. I'm more interested in Lost oddyssey to be honest.

so since we are making predictions here i predict you dont own a 360 and you are saying that all 360 games are worse than PS3 games? and when lair gets MANY (not 1) TERRIBLE reviews those dont count, and when ace combat, halo 3, mass effect, bioshock, fable 2, C&C 3, Gears of war, halo wars, and lost oddesy, all have the critics saying they are amazing games those dont matter, im sorry but you cant argue when you have no point, how is warhawk better? have you played the full game? a demo? how about AC6? you have that game? NO THEN STFU!! and i have a PS3 i will pick up heavenly sword and FF 13 but not FF versus, lair, and warhawk cause all of them dont appeal to me, now i wont go and say they are crap because that is my opinion and i dont decide for everyone but reconsider before you talk about wat you dont know, and is this a PS3 forum? no so dont come in hear and write stupid comments, if you want to come in say something relevant to the subject or dont comment!

HK-47-M4, while we're all entitled to our opinions, I think it'd be wise to reserve judgement when comparing Ratchet and Clank to Banjo-Kazooie 3 for at least a little while. The only thing we've seen of that game is a pre-rendered trailer which came out months. We know absolutely nothing on the actual gameplay. So, while it could be like its predecessors and be another platformer, for all we know, it could be an epic free-roaming RPG with FPS elements strewn in. We just don't know, so I think it's unfair of you to compare the two games when so little information is available.

Even so, comparing the two series is a bit of a stretch, as Ratchet and Clank games tend to focus much more on combat and shooting than Banjo-Kazooie games, which devoted gameplay more towards pure platforming and puzzle-solving. Like I said, you're entitled to your opinion, but I'd be wary of making such extreme judgments yet.

And actually, come to think of it, you're basing your argument on games which haven't been released yet. Unless you're somehow a developer and have access to in-progress versions of the game and a debug PS3 (which I highly doubt), I'd be leery of declaring that all of these games are going to be superb by default. Trailers and screenshots can only be so indicative of a game's potential quality. Until you actually get your hands on the full game itself (ie: not just a demo), you theoretically can't say for certain that a given game is awesome just because you haven't spent any quality time with them yet. As an example, for all we know, FF XIII and FF VS XIII could be Final Fantasy's equivalent of The Legend of Zelda's CD-i installments and we just don't know it yet. There's always that possibility that major disappointment could set in even after a major amount of hyping. It's happened before with games and it's bound to happen again.

If, instead, your argument had been based on games which actually had been released and you could say with certainty that PS3 Exclusive Game X is superior to Xbox 360 Exclusive Game X, then we'd have a different story. But as it is, one could say you're taking a risk by betting that all of these upcoming games are going to be great and blow the 360 out of the water. I'm not a Microsoft fanboy, but I've paid enough attention to the gaming industry over the years to say I wouldn't be as comfortable as you are if I was making such statements.

(Also, for the record, you stated that Unreal Tournament 3 is PS3 exclusive. It's only an exclusive in the same sense that the GTA games were for the PS2 last generation; it's just a limited time before the subsequent 360 version is released. This is widely-published information.)

That was just pathetic, I guess Haze, Unreal Tournament 3, Time Crisis 4, Tekken 6, and all Sony First Party just don't exist.. And the PS3 already has more than 45 games, M$ is spreading a bunch of lies. I'm not trying to be a fanboy or start a flamewar but really Microsoft does need to check their facts before they accuse Sony or Nintendo of something they just made up.

The 360 has sold more than the PS3 because it's just obviously been out much longer, since all the consoles have varied release times it's grossly unfair to judge them on sales so far, and it's more accurate to judge them on their rate of sales to see which is more successful at the moment. And most of these lame game comparisons have been with dodgey porting jobs by EA on multiplatform games, which is also unfair on the PS3 as we know it to be just simply the more powerful machine, devs have not exploited this as of yet because it costs a lot of money. And lastly, tell me 5 good 360 games that are OUT NOW that would make me buy the system..."

Forza 2, Gears of War, Dead Rising, Madden 08(best version), PGR3, DOA4 & Crackdown. Also, its not just ea games. Pretty much all multiplats are better on the 360 or equal. Even All-Pro Football is at 60fps on 360 while the ps3 version is 30fps.

That's like flipping out because the 360 is several thousand yen in China. To them, they're paying JUST AS MUCH as we do. Notice how the PS3 is a 1,000 dollar console? Garryth, for the record, storage medium has little to do with the actual graphical capabilities of the system. It just affects what the term storage medium implies: storage. DVDs are theoretically just as capable as Blu-Rays when it comes to containing high definition content; the only difference is how much each one can have.

I don't think you'll ever hear someone say that Blu-Ray is a superior disc medium because it can somehow push more polygons than the competition.

Lol,the price of the core system was REDUCED to $50 more than the price of the PRO system in America(or,the same price as the HDMI,Halo Designed, with play and charge kit and the usual necessities such as a wireless controller...).That's ridiculous. Why the prices?I'm guessing it has to do with the shipping price and high government tax on foreign objects.
