Okami wins Edge award

Capcom's Clover Studio colourful adventure wins UK magazine's coveted award at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival.

EDINBURGH, UK--A jury of five games-industry staff have voted on their favourite title of the past 12 months in the annual Edge awards--and Okami picked up the winning gong.

The award ceremony, which was the final event of the first day of the Edinburgh Interactive Festival, was presented by deputy editor Alex Wiltshire.

There were eight titles nominated for this year's award, the first being the Generations GBA series, which Wiltshire readily admitted was "just because we loved it." The title consisted of seven individual games, and was only released in Japan. The others were Canis Canem Edit (known as Bully in the US), Dead Rising, DEFCON, Final Fantasy XII, Okami, Test Drive Unlimited, and Wii Sports.

The eight games were nominated by Edge and sent out to the five judges, who were to vote and make the final decision. On the jury this year were Charles Cecil from Revolution Software, Martin Kenwright of Evolution Studios and Bigbig Studios, games journo Steven Poole, vice president of digital content at BBC Worldwide America Alice Taylor, and Gas Powered Games CEO Chris Taylor.

Charles Cecil said that Okami "takes your breath away," whereas Taylor stated it was "visually wonderful," and Kenwright that "it proves the PlayStation 2 is still capable of giving us fun, innovative games."

Although Capcom could not be present in Edinburgh to accept the award, it sent a video in thanks.

    Okami is proply my favorite game I have ever played! It's just such an awsome game,it makes you feel so calm,its just like going to china,or Japan or whatever lol

    Okami is unique and awesome but I think Final Fantasy is better.
    Though went it comes to Graphics, Okami wins hands down

    Glad to hear it, Okami is one of the greatest games I've ever played and deserved more recognition. It's a shame to gamers around the world that the low sales negates the chance of any possible HD sequal...

    Why wasn't Gears a finalist? Wasn't it the game of the year for GameSpot? I mean if it's that good, it should at least be in the running.

    -Okami was the last game purchase for my PS2. One of the most original games ever produced.

    The one thing i hate about capcom is that they closed clover down. Okami and godhand were flatout games, i hope they realise and open them again, imagine okami n godhand with THE POWER OF PS3!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I've been playing Okami for a while now. I'm 40 hours into it and it still isn't finished. I had no idea it would be this long. Absolutely awesome game.

    that game's is like one of the most colorful games i've ever played it sucks you in once you start playing you can't put the controler down

    @MGS-Deathscythe hmmm edge and credibility for me don't mix at times sorry and iv read the mag since issue 0 , nothing against okami but edge is a little oddball with its taste in games at times

    I think people are quick to judge Okami as a really great game, it looked pretty average when I watched my girl friend play it and I didn't even feel like picking it up (and I love art, I don't buy manga unless I like the art sttyle). It's a decent game where you play as a wolf and it has some neat extras like the brush and the pretty background but apart from that I don't see much very special in it. Thats just my opinion on the game but I do believe it deserves what attention and awards it's been getting because quite frankly nothing else beats it on visual style (although if we counted games from the past too I'd say I prefer Shadow of the Colossus).
