$1 million Fury tournament launched

Upcoming MMOG Fury seeks 600,000 worldwide players to share in a million dollars' worth of tournament prizes; Australian server on the cards.

Australian-based developer Auran is initiating a $1 million prelaunch gaming tournament for its upcoming player-versus-player massively multiplayer online game Fury, which is slated to hit shelves globally this October.

The community contest, which is due to begin on the final three weekends of September (September 15th, 22nd, and 29th) will see both individuals and teams vie for a chance at a million dollars' worth of prizes, including PC hardware, Fury prepaid subscription time cards, and scholarships to study video game development. Hardware vendors Dell, Nvidia, and Altech have signed on for sponsorship. Complete tournament entry information--including the exact nature of the tournament and where to download the free prelaunch client for the game--will be available from August 14 at Fury's official Web site, with Auran expecting up to 600,000 players worldwide to participate. Fury is being distributed in the US by Gamecock, Codemasters in Europe, and by n3vrf41l Publishing in Australia.

Auran CEO Tony Hilliam called for the support of both the Australian games industry and retailers to help generate interest in the title, with the company emblazoning the game's launch presentation in Sydney overnight with Australian Made stickers. The company is setting the goal of selling more than 33,000 copies of Fury to the Australian market, a number that would see it pass Auran's own Dark Reign game, which went on sale a decade ago this year. Hilliam also went on to detail plans to open and maintain a dedicated Australian-hosted server for players if sales numbers reached 100,000 units. A locally located server is a feature still not offered by Fury's biggest competitor, Blizzard's World of Warcraft. It does, however, offer US-hosted Oceanic realms.

Fury's official media and channel partners launch also featured Aussie model Siobhan Parekh, who has been chosen to be the "official" face of the game, posing in a revealing Fury-themed photoshoot and lending her likeness. Auran artists have created a model based on her facial features, which will appear as a playable character in the game.

I don't really know much about this game (and I don't really care). But hearing that they're Aussies and being an Aussie myself I really do hope that this game is a success for them.

P.S. I had NO idea Dark Reign came from them. How cool.

Very nice to see they are planning an Australia-based server!

After playing the beta, this is the sort of game I can see myself playing regularly in small bursts, such as I would for CSS or BF2. Very fun game, but not as deep as most MMO's.

    Lets hear it for PvP.

    Yaaaaaay PVP >_>

The PvE Carebears are probably just jealous they're not getting a million Aussie bucks.

I tried that game and didnt' really like it. Not big into the PvP only stuff. But it was pretty sweet that you could make a character that looked identical to Dave Mustaine.

"Fury is the biggest pile of garbage I have ever laid my hands upon. Another worthless MMO."

C'mon, less drama. I played the beta, might play it again. It's not god-awful like you describe. The artwork was pretty damn good (in the hubs, anyway - battle maps were less detailed) and it moved really well on my 8800GTX. Certainly didn't reek of "generic quest grind go fetch MMO" nor did it have the cheaply-made feel of the majority of Asian grindfest PvPers. Feels like it has a solid budget. And if you boil it down to the PvP combat itself, Fury has some of the fastest action in a MMO. It's pretty spastic at first, and the skills are pretty similar and watered-down across the classes, and the FedEx quest grind is replaced by PvP match grind in Fury, but I wouldn't call the game worthless.

Very slick strategy to get people involved in a mediocre MMO that will pay for its own prize and then some in the number of participants they want to get.

I played it back in June and before that in April, and this is a rather great game. Think of it as Shadowrun with magic - fast action MMO.

And it also looks gorgeous, powered on UE3 and looking devine. And the environments are varied and fun.

Good luck to Auran on this game, it deserves to do well. And Blizzard should go about making that Aussie server, recent sales reports put Burning Crusade and the original WoW in the top spots.
