Ramayan 3392 A.D. comic gets the MMO treatment

Sony Online Entertainment and Virgin Comics team up to bring series based on Indian mythological lore to online gaming.

With games like The Agency and Kung Fu Hustle in the works, Sony Online Entertainment is expanding its portfolio of massively multiplayer online role-playing games beyond the fantasy staples of EverQuest and EverQuest II. Today the publisher provided the latest evidence of this, announcing a partnership with Virgin Comics to create an MMO game based on that label's futuristic reinterpretation of Indian mythology, Ramayan 3392 A.D.

SOE will work with the creative team behind the comic as part of an exclusive multiyear worldwide licensing agreement. In a statement, Virgin Comics cofounder and CEO Sharad Devarajan explained that the game's cultural roots will help bring a fresh perspective to the genre. "In a world increasingly dominated with games influenced by a western Tolkien mythos, Ramayan will offer gamers a chance to experience a whole new universe of characters and archetypes derived from one of the oldest cultures on Earth," Devarajan said in a statement.

No release date was given for the game.

    ramayana+future+comic+mmo=bad mix.
    I read the ramayana, for the most part, and it was fantastic.
    I can't see this as an MMO or a futuristic comic based MMO.

    Its awsome but... an MMO? WHY? That will destroy the whole air and atmostfear that the creators of this game will fight until the last days. People will start playing around and start behaving like baboons of 8 years old making stupid stuff. Instead of a MMO they should make an awsome Action RPG where you can travel to towns and go to dungeons like Okami or Zelda. Well they have decided I think. I cant spend time on MMO Id rather enjoy more games and real social time.

    you know I think this is great that my group of people are getting a very rich and awesome experience retold..but why inthe future?......and why a mmo....haha I guess because nobody could stop Ram, if there was a single player campaign.

    OMG!! Awesome....Ramayan is an EPIC mythology....they should make it singleplayer. But I guess MMO will rock. Now we will see massive Indian audience in a MMO. I'll keep tracking.

    I'd love to see an action game based on Christian values. Someone punches you, and you press a button to turn the other cheek. Retaliate and you lose. Repeat as necessary.

    Recently I was thinking to become a game developer and my only dream was to build a game based on Ramayana as I am from India and wanted to create and Epic adventure for the player in the huge Ramayan world I also thought of the stages and how to use Six axis controller for it But my dreams are crushed as this game is getting developed as a mmo instead of a single player adventure

    This is great, Having Grown up with stories of ramayan It will be an awesome experience for me to play the games! being a part of ramayan that itself will pull many non gamers into the gaming scene

    But, I dont know if the Comic series changes the real ramayan a lot or something, because almost EVERY indian(thats almost a billion people) know the story of ramayan, and any discrepancy will be noticed which wont be good.

    EDIT:This game is planned to come by 2010 BTW.

    SOE will probably just take the SWG engine, change up the graphics a bit and sell it under a new game. By the way, how many of you thought it meant American Indian?

    lol - I guess this speaks for the average gamer's attentiveness level.
    I saw it too, and thought Rayman before I realized it was spelled differently. A comic would be cool though; no maybe a cartoon. But it'd have to be like Rayman 2, with gibberish-talk and kept translation to a minimum.

    I'm just happy that my Indian culture is finally getting some videogame spotlight. Sounds pretty cool, but I'm unsure of how large a community this game can garner, which is pretty important for an MMO
