Blizzard to WOW Leipzig?

[UPDATE] German ratings board names, rates Games Convention demo of next World of Warcraft product.

It's become standard practice for massively multiplayer online games to release expansion packs to update their core offerings sometime down the road. Since launching in late 2004, Blizzard has placated its 9 million-strong audience with a single expansion, The Burning Crusade, which was snatched up by the human hordes at a record-setting pace in January. Though the two-year development time undoubtedly helped Blizzard's expansion achieve critical praise near-equal to its progenitor, fans of the series have been antsy about how long they'll have to wait for the game's next expansion.

It appears the next add-on may be closer than many may have thought. As the Entertainment Software Rating Board is occasionally wont to do, German software ratings board Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle (USK to its friends) appears to have tipped Blizzard's hand by revealing not only the name of Blizzard's next expansion, but when gamers can expect to see it as well.

Spotted by German community site Gamona, a listing for World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King appeared on USK yesterday, accompanied by the tag "GC-demo," implying Blizzard will be showing Wrath of the Lich King at this year's Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany. Responding to a request for comment, a Blizzard representative stated, "We have not yet announced any details with regard to future expansions of World of Warcraft."

The listing lends further credence to rumors circulating this week that the next WOW expansion will travel north to the frigid region of Northrend. According to a report on WOW Insider, an anonymous tipster sent world that the Video Games Live orchestra, slated to perform the final concert at this year's BlizzCon, will play three pieces titled "Northrend 1," "Northrend 2," and "Northrend 3." Warcraft aficionados will be quick to note that Northrend is where the Warcraft III hero Arthas Menethil made his stand against the dreadlord Mal'Ganis, only to be corrupted by the powerful yet chaotic Frostmourne sword due to the meddling of Kel'Thuzad.

With the WOW expansion now quite visible on the horizon, a new wrinkle has been added to the much-speculated beta-key giveaway at this year's BlizzCon. For more news from Blizzard and Wrath of the Lich King, check back later this week for GameSpot's coverage of BlizzCon as well as later this month for updates from the Leipzig Games Convention.

[UPDATE] It would appear Blizzard was none too happy to have its thunder stolen. Updating its listings today, USK has pulled the entry for World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King from its database.

Well, if the expansion adds Goblins, I'll play. Least until I run out of new race-specific quests like the really good ones in the new Blood Elf and Draenei zones.

All things said though, I find that most of WOW gets to be grind all too soon and the fun is just not enough for all the stupid work you do. I've quit and am not looking back until Blizzard figures out that cheating people of their fun by getting them used to gradually upward-sloping grind that eventually becomes ridiculous and not fun at all isn't really giving anyone their money's worth, and that it'll make people quit.

I never had my life destroyed by WOW, but many times I realized that I'd spent hours of my days over the weekend doing tons of work in that game and that I was tired and hadn't enjoyed my weekend at all, but still had to go back to school/work... and all I had to show for all that was perhaps 1-2 levels and some ugly looking, but powerful loot that I winced at having to wear, because if I didn't, everything I was fighting would kill me.

Here's hoping that Blizzard really tones down the grind in their upcoming patches and their next expansion. The key quests/attunements/rep grind in the 60 levels made me scoff, shake my head, and leave. Thank God I reached them when BC came out, so I was able to scram away from that nonsense and straight into Outland. Too bad Outland bored me so much that I quit though. Now I play single player games, or non-mmo multiplayer ones that are inherently fun. Ones that are fun 100% of the time, not 5-10% when I get rewarded, with the other 90-95% of the playtime being unfun grinding.

STOP BLAMING THE GAME. I'm 13 and I play Wow. I love it. Its pure gaming.. And I am also a top grade student. It doesnt matter The people are the ones who have to control themselfs. Anyway I think it's too early for another expansion. Maybe in 2009/2010. I also hope they put more races, jobs and new places.

I'm really excited for this, but the expansion probably won't come out for quite a while anyways. Considering this will potentially be the first showing of Wrath of the Lich King, that means the expansion is probably a long ways off.

great that an expansion is on the way...hopefully this one will give back some of the differentiation that BC took away when it gave both the alliance and horde the ability to use all classes.

ryan-man you got some serious problems my friend......

As for the next WoW expansion, I, and many others, knew it would be Northrend not long after Burning Crusade launched b/c that was when they started patching in Northrend labeled art assets. So no surprise there.

I really enjoyed my time in WoW, all 2+ years of it, but after TBC was released and my guild was torn apart b/c of all the rediculous bottle-necks,faction grinding and attunements I just couldn't bear to play it anymore. The content itself was great and really fun, but it just wasn't worth it anymore.

I don't like WoW (played it, got level 60... but once you see it from the outside you realize how stupid it is. It's like a job, it works on a reward system. Kill 30 of these monsters and you will be rewarded), but my friend told me about this new expansion... and all I could think of is, wow, they just released the burning crusade recently... why another expansion so soon? If it was just a nice update, cool, but this is an expansion that millions will go out and buy. Seems to me they are squeezing their customers even further.

I played avidly up until the first expansion. I raided naxx and was in the top horde guild in the server. I thought i was done with all the rep grinds, ridiculous "key" quests, attunements and everything else that added more suck to the game. then expansion came out and BAM another million factions to get exalted with. /quit! glad I did it too. I do more with my friends now and my grades went up within a few weeks of quitting

MamaLuku - i must super agree with you Those online games just seem to take away too much life from you. All those footages of guys leaving families couse they play WoW are ridiculous. I'm 26, i have a good job, nice gf and I love good games in the evening, 1-2 or sometimes 3 times in the week, for an hour or too. You must be either crazy, bad at socializing and working or 18- to have so much time for games It's just my opinion, no need for all hate-replies, take care!

I am still amazed that WoW is as strong as it is, I am happy I never joined, I have a life, and it revolves around Final Fantasy XI (Lol not really, I don't play as much as I used to). After you reach your level cap, you can still "Merit" yourself and make yourself and your skill stronger.

crissy14 I see exactly what you mean. Once you have gotten to level cap really not much to do. Thats why it would be nice if Blizz decided to do something like EQ did and have AA's or some kind of thing were you can build on your character once you have reached to the highest level. And I'm not even in a guild, just cuz i really dont have that much time to plan when i can raid and such so i mainly do pvp or do level 70 instances, but I think it would be really neat if they could just add something more than just obtaining gear at level 70.

I still don't have a single character to 70 yet, and I need to do things. Play other games. Practice guitar. Learn to speak Spanish. Hopefully, this expansion is due to be released 0ctober of 2009. One Christmas after StarCraft II.

17 pages of comments for this news in one day , and 9 millions players? I've played many mmo's including Wow since it launched, and for the 2 reasons above it has got to be the greatest mmo of all time....sadly. Sadly because Wow its a great game for the first 6 months till u reach the level cap and after that u are left with only the endless grind with the guild. If u are lucky u get 1 item per raid and that's it, that's all thats left for you to do in Wow. Wow it's an PVE game and the pve gets boring at level 70 (same instance every day for a few hours to get an item). It's sad that the best mmo of all times till now can only offer so few to some many players (9 million of them). And as the time goes by it becomes more commercial that any other game. I mean it's an easy to play mmo, tauren druids(who love nature) are allied with the undead, night elfs are allied with the humans agains the elfs (sounds so stupid), TBC gave to both sides theirs unique classes instead of giving the shammy something to make it better in pve, etc. It's true that Wow gives to some (or maybe many) players addiction, including to some of my friends, but sadly some are addicted because there isn't anything else better on the market. But i hope Connan, Warhammer and other mmo's will top Wow, if only because its a 3 years old game and the industry should have offered something better during this time. And as for some comments before me, some are acting like kids that defend they toy (and they probably are kids), others got to hate the game to the point of pathology after they played it and got sick while others never played it at all but still they HAVE to have an opinion. There will always be two side for every subject but here is my advice to you: try to be moderate, not so radical. Its not like some tries to persuade you to give him your wallet away.

jeez its funny to see how WoW haters are drawn like wolves to raw meat to a game that they hate... seriously, if you have qualms with how the game is, why do you even bother to say it? do you feel like you have redeemed yourself? was cancelling your account and saying **** you to blizzard just not enough? i cant take this about any game, people just love to talk **** about things they probably dont even know anything about. why would you assume that the only reason theyre doing this is to keep their customers? many other MMOs have tried, and failed. WoW will keep on being one of the greatest MMORPGs ever created. whether or not you flamers diss the **** out of a game that is so incredibly hard to maintain. you know what? start your own MMO. just try it. tell me about it, make it free, fix ALL the problems in it just like that. sounds easy huh?

I love how people like to whine when the classes get changed a bit in a patch. It's like, a, duh, learn with it, and adapt. If you can't adapt to changes, frankly, you need to stop playing MMO's, because they all do it.And no, they've never "broken" a class, you just didn't learn how to use it properly. You wanna see a class being broken, you look at what happened in SWG.Now THAT'S what you call breaking classes.Well the whole game for that matter, but still.

What about time, they gona kill WOW !

More expesions = Lack of creativity for Blizzard.

They got no **** idea, so close that server and work on another project. In my mind, Blizzard is already a dead compagny.

Live for Warhammer online. Warhammer will be more complicated and deep, and in an 15 tears fan of warhammer rpg on table, they got a story, they got a great world, and they got CHAOS !

    ...

Wow got wolves and boars ! Great deal ! They got orc, its already in all fuc*** RPG and they got dark elves .... elves .... wtf and further more, they got no STYLES ! Even Chuck noris got more styles than the orcich ordes !

Im sick of this game, let WOW DIE !

I fail to see how people have let WOW take over their lives, this is one of the easier MMO's I have played and leveling is quite easy if you do the quests. As for the community all online games have this problem and after 10 years of it I have learned to ignore the problem, I do however agree with Cirico_cuvie that they need to stop changing the mechanics of the game every small patch.

WoW is so boring and outdated these days. Once the new wave of more interesting and technically advanced MMORPGs comes out WoW will be left in the dust. Games like Conan, Warhammer, Pirates, Gods, and Tabula are going to be way cooler and more original i beleive. Especially the gameplay THANK GOD!!!!!

Another WOW expansion, but this time instead of killing Illidan you'll Arthas...gee I didn't see this coming at all (sarcasim). Maybe they'll make Arthas even easier than Illidan was so he'll be an even bigger disappointment!

I completely agree with Chirico_Cuvie. WoW is broken. How much more can they break it? Rather than constantly working to add more to what they already have, they should be taking the time to fix what is already there.

I agree largely with Cirico_cuvie and wildchild69. I was in the middle of leveling some of my 60's to 70 when i realized the attunements were out of hand, and the necessity of being in a guild to do anything was too high.

Some WoWfriends thought likewise, and now we are playing Guild Wars. It has issues too, but it's a nice change of pace, and equipment isn't quite as important as in wow, and isnt as hard to get. It seems more skill and familiarity oriented, rather than equipment oriented.

Altho the best part is I can take a break for a month and not have to consider that a wasted chunk of my $79 6-month pre-paid block. Viva la no fees.

WoW is fun when you level a character, once you hit 70 it's really hard to get anything done unless you get in a great guild and dedicate way too much time to get the stupid attunements. The amount of elitist jerks has increased as well so you're either in a group that has no idea what they're doing or all you see in the chat is L2P noob. Combine that with Blizzard's constant screwing with the character class mechanics and praying every time a new patch comes out your class/profession doesn't get broken in some unrealistic goal of "fairness" that Blizzard is trying to maintain.

After 3 years and 6 characters ranging from level 24-70 I've retired from WoW and I doubt this expansion will bring me back. No amount of content can fix the fact that Blizzard can't leave the game alone and that many of the people playing are a-holes. Here's hoping Conan will be better.
