Halo 3 campaign mode to feature online co-op for four

Bungie confirms that upcoming sci-fi shooter will let gamers play through story as Master Chief, the Arbiter, and two new Covenant Elites.

While Bungie gave the world a good look at the upcoming Halo 3's multiplayer battles in the form of a hugely populated beta program, it has been much more tight-lipped about its plans for the sci-fi first-person shooter's campaign mode. Today the studio confirmed a much-speculated piece of information about the campaign mode, stating on its Web site that it will indeed support online cooperative multiplayer for up to four players.

Since there's only one Master Chief, the four-player online campaign mode will include three more playable characters: Halo 2's Arbiter and two of his fellow Covenant Elites. All characters will play identically, but the Elites will wield carbines instead of battle rifles. That's an awful lot of firepower to throw into the same situations as the game's single-player campaign, but Bungie says it's addressing the various gameplay issues it creates.

"You're going to want to play co-op as hard as you can stomach it," Bungie's Web site warns. "We'd certainly recommend Legendary, but we'll be revealing some more ways to make the game more interesting and challenging for multiple players in the very near future."

The online cooperative mode will support the game's film-saving functions, but gamers will not be able to join in midgame. Players will have to congregate in a lobby first, from which point they can pick up the campaign at any saved checkpoint. As in previous games, players will have the option of cooperative split-screen play, but it is limited to two people. However, once matched, a pair can complete its foursome through system link or by going online.

    I'll start by saying I have not researched fully the PS3 but...apparently neither has Kruegmeister. To spend all that money on components that are not necessary sure seems to be kinda dumb. As far as the debate between the 360 and PS3, look at comparisons done by non-partisan techs. Screenshots, in most cases, show the 360 has better graphics and lighting effects--as well as faster frame rates. Not to mention the sheer gap in game choices....360 has so many more. Sony just is not as imperial in the gaming world as they once were, which was bound to happen....look @ Nintendo in the 80's.

    if im not mistaken that gold elite is in halo 2. You know the part where the arbitor is talking to a elite in a wraith. near the end on the game i forget what level right now sry

    Lol, so many fanboys. Halo 3 will be awesome and hopefully a big step up from 1 and 2 which were a bit too similar, maybe slightly more epic... Multiplayer and co-op were the best part of halo 1 in my opinion, im glad they have focused on that aspect this time.

    Soz, but fanboys of anything are annoying. Right now, 360 does have better games, and halo 3 is an example. (doesn't mean ps3 inst good, we've seen killzone (edit) 2).     im looking forward to this, and because I have brothers who haven't left home yet, in my home I have: a wii, an xbox 360, 2 gaming pc's and most of the older consoles as well (going back untill the snes)

    Kruegmeister... please don't talk anymore, infact don't talk ever. If you have something smart to say, and atleast did your research. Were all going WTF are you talking about, a 40 gig coming soon? Every time they go cheaper they are losing too much money, so they cut off a finger. They are losing alot of money already anyways.

    Also your question is answered if you read the whole paragraph above. PS3 is a great console, like the xbox, it is high quality, like the xbox, it doesn't have alot of game support, like the xbox, its huge, like the xbox, it isn't selling, like the xbox. Still don't know why all the original fanboys talked crap about the Xbox (1) and bought the exact same thing they talked crap about.

    A majority of favorites have been added to the list with updates so you can play the great games from the xbox on the 360, like someone said below, the majority of games I havn't seen backwards capatible are the games I and a majority are not interested in, or didn't have good ratings. If you send them an email they might work on the game you want them to have an update for. I got my Starwars Republic Commandos

    I must laugh at you, although it may be where you have it set up, you bought a list of worthless things. Memory cards aren't needed, but I have one since I have 3 hard driives, two 20GB and one 120gb. Lets just face it, all consoles are affordable, people who spend money on the xbox360 know they could have bought a PS3, but why?

    Why buy the xbox (Ps3) of this year, when you can have the Ps2 instead (xbox360) Its just history repeating itself. Ps2 had alot of problems too for a few years

    Kruegseister, y would u buy memory cards if u have a 360 premium. and u dont need wireless (i dont have it and it works fine) and u must have some crappy original xbox games if u cant play them on ur 360 because they converted all of the good ones. o yeah and even if ps3 was cheaper than 360 i would still buy a 360 cause it has better games and just as good if not better graphics. it also has the largest most fun and interactive online community. thats y i love my 360. if ur gay u will report me.

    Yep... That is what I paid.
    Yes, I know I could have kept my XBox1 but I cannot keep Every Old Console to Play my Old games. My PS3 plays ALL of my old PS2 games, something I cannot say about my 360.

    PS3 is not crap... It is NOT $799 it is $499 and their is a 40 gig $399 version coming soon.

    My 360 with Wireless, Gamesave transfer and Xbox Live cost me $750 so far, and the Live Charges will continue. So 360 Fanboys are the ones that should shut up. No actually ALL Fanboys usually talk out their a&$.

    Anyways... To my Real Reason for Posting.

    Any word if the 4 player Co-op will be limited to Online.
    I would really like to see 4 player Split Screen Co-Op.
    Developers remember that some of us have "Real" Friends and not just "Online" Friends.

    well the ps3 is already a too high priced console, the xbox started at 399 and ps3 at around 799 (not sure) you would obviously go with the one you can afford and is most reasonable. with 799 you used all the money on the system itself. 300 you can get the system and a few games. im getting two worlds to hold me till halo 3 woohah

    ok if what everyone is sayin here is true the only weapon PS3 has against the 360 is MGS4 then they bin had cause they r plannin to make it multy platform cause there aint enough people than own the PSCrap to make the money they spent to make it lol how sad out sold by nintendo Xbox 360 forever lol and halo looks amazin cant wait for it hope its better than halo 2 tho.     very cool.....

    i want to comment too on this sony blu ray format vs box 360 dvd format. maybe it's just me, but I used to love it when games came on multiple discs. I remember Fear Effect, Finaly Fantasy VII, etc came on multiple discs, and it made it feel like I was playing an epic game. So in regards to how much info a disc can store, I don't mind if games start coming out on xbox 360 that are multi-disced, I think it would be kind of cool, would take me back to the good old days of multi disc gaming. All of these sony people talking about this, I didn't hear you crying back in the day of final fantasy you know why, cause the game rocked, didn't matter how many discs it was on. just had to get that out, feel much better now.

    Well, JLVMVPGT3, Sorry for busting ya chops like this bro, but i am sure that most 360 fans wil agree with me when i say that it's not a matter of the storage space of the console and the amount of GB that a gane has, itz a matter of how good the game is...there is a difference between a long game and borin ass gameplay and a short game with good ass gameplay...and just for example...Gears Of War was short to me and it is one of the top games out right now....and can i just say XBOX 360?

    Yes guys lets not allways get into a fight about PS3 vs 360 and the simplest way to do that is if sony fanboys stop coming to rubbish Halo. Its a 360 game not multi-platform so the only guys who need to be here comenting on the game are the people with a 360, unless of course its constuctive then fine. Its getting boring now, everywhere its the same give it a rest. To have such a one sided comitment to a money making bussiness is blinkered at best and sad at worse and while your missing out because of a comitment to a money making bussiness, we the real games fans will be kicking butt on Halo 3. Hell Yeah.

    triniprince1420 for me MGS is alot better then halo for me but in the long run the ps3 will have more games that 360 can not fit in 9 gb so they will have to go to the ps3 with 50 gb

    in the end wii will win like it or not and that is a fact

    ALL Halo Fans need to pick-up an issue on sale today from egm....it has previews on the newStuff including Story and others like== guns ex{brute shotgun and Gravity hammer} items {shield&shield reg,}Vehicles{human banshee--Hornet^_^}
    new game mode{Forge--map editor*} These are just a few....im just saying the elites look amazing and i will be using them in H3....ONE more thing....you guys need to see the biggest vehicle in the game***Elephant*** aka HUGE! mobile base with turret and enough room inside to hold a mongoose. well yea go BUY IT!!!!
