Sony announces PS3-exclusive Rockstar franchise

The developer that did so much for the PlayStation 2 with the Grand Theft Auto series looks set to bring an all-new game franchise to the PlayStation 3.

A totally new game franchise will be coming from Rockstar Games--creator of the Manhunt and Grand Theft Auto series--and it will be exclusive to Sony's PlayStation 3.

SCEA's director of third-party relations, Michael Shorrock, wrote on the official US PlayStation blog, "As part of our long standing relationship with Rockstar, and the incredible success for both companies with the cultural icon that is Grand Theft Auto we've agreed to the PlayStation exclusive rights of the next great franchise from the Rockstar studios."

Nothing whatsoever was revealed about the new franchise except the clarification that it would not be LA Noire.

According to Shorrock, "Rockstar really wanted to make a game that you can truly only do on PS3." He also said that the reason Sony locked the IP down as an exclusive deal was because it believed that it would "set the bar for the rest of the industry."

Recently, more and more titles which were previously thought to be exclusive to one console or another have been announced as multiplatform, including Assassin's Creed, Fatal Inertia, and Devil May Cry 4. Some media speculation stated that former Sony chief Ken Kutaragi's "slowness" in tying up the red tape of the deals had led to Sony losing exclusives for the PS3.

    mgs:rising is not going to be mad by kojima its his younger team that going to take on mgs: rising kojima and the team behind mgs4 is working on mgs:peace walker so that instanly tells you that its not going to be as gd as mgs4.

    i can tell the next mgs is not going to be better then mgs 4 cause is going to be on 360 that means is going to have less stuff cause we all know ps3 games can have more stuff since is bluray im not saying im a fanboy cause im not but ps3 games have more if there exclusive still is kool is coming to xbox ill be kool that xbox get to play mgs

    According to Kojima, MGS4 is still PS3 exclusive. MGS:Rising is a new MGS franchise, which will be on PS3, PC and 360. No one said the next MGS would be exclusive, hell no one even thught they were working on the enxt one since Kojima said MGS4 would be his last. FF14 will probably eventually come to 360, but if it requires both an XBL account plus seperate account, I can't see it being an attractive deal, especially in these harsh economic times, people don't have the cash to idly throw about like that.

    I'd prefer it if exclusives stayed exclusive - that way they'd be made to get the most out of what the console can offer, which is why I think the statement "Rockstar really wanted to make a game that you can truly only do on PS3." is extremely encouraging. It means that if the game stays exclusive, it is more likely to be extremely ambitious and different, which is what I really like to hear about upcoming exclusives, no matter what console they are for

    I would like to see what those ps3 fanboys, who were pissed off at microsoft for buying the rights to gta 4 dlc, say now. Are u going to bash sony, like u did microsoft, for securing exclusive rights to this game. At least microsoft only got dlcs but sony here is getting an entire game. But oh well, I did try to explain to some of the ps3 fanboys that this is how the gaming industry works but they were blind in there blind hate of microsoft. Any ways, not surprised this happened at all. Was expecting some thing like this. Now lets hope it will be a great game.

    what seriously sucks about this generation of videogame consoles is that they make u have to buy all the consoles to get the max out of gaming!!:@ PS3 owners cant play the GTA DLC and the Xbox owners cant play this game, ps3 owners cant play halo 3 and gears of war 2 mass effect... , xbox owners cant play killzone 2 and resistance 2 and msg4... in their stupid quest for money Micro$oft and $ony have been making ppl hate then day by day!

    Yeah, now that their stocks are worth 6$ a share they might rethink that statement, if they are going to invest in a franchise they need as many potential buyers as they can get, 360 and Pc included. I don't see how any 3rd party company will be able to afford to make exclusive tittles at this point.

    Oooooo Ps3 exlcusive new franchise:O. That is ofc until mr Microsoft turns up on Rockstar's doorstep with his bottomless cheque book!
    We have already seen how fickle Rockstar is once it's had a sniff at the Microsoft pot.
    Hopefully this "new franchise" will show us all what the Ps3 can really do. So far this constantly mentioned "uber hardware" has only been usefull in the hand of the lame Ps3 fanboy spam artist (yes i'm talking to you lamos responsible for the inevitable barrage of toilet talk to follow this message!), who is often dabbing his eyes with a tissue in the other hand at the fact there has been a whole lot of fail since Ps3 came out. Not fail in the games, there has been some great ones, i'm refering to the FAIL that has been going on at Sony. Come on Sony! pull your proverbial fingers out and give us all something to smile about and give me a reason to wash my hands of my Xbox forever.

    i gotta say cool to the fact that there's gonna be an exclusive franchise towards the PS3, but it's super lame that rockstar hasn't leaked any info on whats the game gonna be!!!!!!!

    man, there aren't any good ps3 exclusives. ps3 suck i bought it and now there's lines going up the screen when i play. WTF i worked so hard, should of got xbox 360.

    What a bunch of babbling idiots..I'm glad I own both..lol.(Currently looking for a Wii SOLD OUT EVERYWHERE..lol) It's sad, there are three great systems out there and all have ( or WILL) great titles ( which is historical within itself) and all you so called "gamers" can do is sit here argue. Let's talk GAMES because that's what GAMERS DO! Stop trying change peoples opinion about "this" console or "that" console. Shouldn't we care more about the games itself? Personally I don't care which console a game comes out on, I saved 7mths for a PS3 around $40 a week ( I sacrifice ALOT of beer on the weekends so DON'T PUSH ME..lol)so I wouldn't have to do the "system wars" mumble jumble routine. My only concern is if the game gonna be any good or not and as fellow gamers you should too! Be a GAMER, NOT a console FANBOY!

    Obviously didn't think that one through! I was thinking how FF7 and MGS both ended up on PC, but I forgot about other games - Gran Turisimo for example - that would never be on another system

    trunksjimmy71 - What do you have against third parties? In the end a good game is a good game. Besides, does Sony even have any first party developers? And Speaking of nintendo, I think its a shame the only decent games on the wii are their first party games (because ultimately it means very few good games)

    AvIdGaMeR444 - The reason developers jumped ship to the PS from the N64 was the ridiculous space limitations imposed by the cartridge. CD's had more than 30 times the storage space, creating games that wouldn't have been possible on the 64 (such as FF7). Similarly, the PS3 is offering far greater capacity for games compared to the 360. Sure, a game on a single blu ray disk might be able to fit on multiple HD-dvd's, but what about games that come on multiple bluray disks? I highly doubt they'd release a game for the 360 that needed 15+ dvd's. Ultimately this means certain types of games will be possible on the PS3 and not on the 360.

    What about Xbox 360 rockstar. you have to give Xbox 360 users some good games that are not coming to PS 3. I'm happy that GTA IV is coming to xbox 360, I hope you guys will not cancel gta iv for xbox 360
