Australia's top-selling games for first half of 2007 revealed

World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade leads best-seller list down under; seven DS titles in overall top 20.

The denizens of Azeroth have voted with their wallets down under, with the latest figures from industry tracker GfK Australia showing that World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade was Australia's top-selling game for the first half of 2007.

World of Warcraft's first expansion pack was the best-selling (by units sold) game in Australia between January 1, 2007, and June 30, 2007. The popularity of the Burning Crusade also helped spur sales of the original game, with World of Warcraft coming in at fifth position in the overall sales lists.

Sony had a strong showing in the overall top 10, with five titles being either for the PlayStation 2 or the PlayStation 3. Final Fantasy XII for the PS2 was the second-highest selling game of 2007 so far, with God of War II and Cricket 2007 coming in at fourth and ninth spots, respectively. As for Sony's new console, Resistance: Fall of Man came in at sixth, while MotorStorm took seventh spot for the PS3.

While Sony dominated the top 10, Nintendo was the winner when it comes to the top 20 games, with eight out of the top 20 games being for Nintendo machines. The DS was particularly strong, with seven games, while the Wii had a solitary entry, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, which came in at 12th place. The Xbox 360 had only one game make the overall top 20--Gears of War, which took 14th spot.

Nintendo DS, has sold so well. Any game which comes out will stay on the charts for a while, because there are so many people who own a ds now.
It is amuzing that there are NO psp games on that chart... this is also because of the current marketing. There has been no exciting PSP games or announcements which warrant a big sale.

I reckon that at the end of the year, there will be alot more 360 titles on that list. Far more DS titles (zelda, sonic rush adventure). Alot of Wii titles, and i mean ALOT - Mario galaxy, metroid prime 3, smash bros...

If sony can price drop the ps3 in aus, and the psp gets some new games - the chart can change again. But seriously, its all down to new hardware, marketing and userbase.
I think the chart will be ds, wii and 360-centric by christmas.

Xbox 360 isn't selling outside the US. Europe, Japan, Aussies, go for the ps3 or Wii hands down. This goes to show that the xbox 360 is slowing down maybe because xbox live marketplace is so lame outside the US among other reasons.

Well think about it, RaiKageRyu, would you rather have a game with the word "diamond" in the title or the word "pearl"?

Why are people surprised at Gears?...It's been on the market for a year, I'm surprised it's still selling.

As for R:FoM same thing...it's a new launch title for them, in fact I would have thought it should have been higher.

    @ scottEfresh
it isnt about whats happening in the americas
look at snes vs genisis the snes won the war because of european and japanesse support wheras the genisis with all its american support still lost by around 10 million units. and that zelda game should be first its sweet

    This is actually very suprising.
The Xbox 360 does very well over there in terms of hardware sales, and up until 2007 the game attach rate was 4 games to one console. What happened?

Cricket beat God of War 2, Twilight Princess, The Sims, and Gears of War? Australia's gamers really do have no taste in games.

This shows that Australia recieves the last of everything. I am still surprised PS2 games are selling the most. It is like technology enters Australia like a year or two after being released in the world. Or, Aussie gamers are the worst gamers.

this real surprise for the PS3 considering it only had from March 23rd when the Wii and 360 had their chances from January. so overall good news for Sony

Gears of War 14th thats disapointing

    PS2's still keeping it strong.

Its funny if you think about it, Gamecube and Xbox are supposed to be the competition.

Calm down Sony Fanboys...just because you have two top ten games in Australia doesn't mean the PS3 is turning around and making a run for top spot or something. The PS3 is too expensive and in the end...has the worst/least amount of games. Australia may be all about Sony but who gives a rats ass, it's all about whats selling in the Americas.

"Because the Wii has a crappy attach rate."

The Wii has crappy games... what can you expect? They're all simplistic and lack depth. It's the hardware that's selling the Wii. People aren't buying it for the games so far. The novelty of the easy controls is why the hardware is moving. Wii has possibly the worst launch ever, if you don't count the gamecube port of Zelda.

"hahaha, cricket 07. . . HAHA! that beat Twilight Princess, thats kinda sad, gears too! wow."

Those two did release in 06 though, if I'm not mistaken.

"Only one Gears of War X360 game .... that is kinda letdown ... list if full of PS2s .... wow .... i thought X360 was more of a hit and Wii was doing better !!!"

PS2 outsold any other console though, so the install base is much bigger. What surprises me is the PS3 games. I didn't expect them to be in the top 10 at all, since Aussies pay about $900 USD for them (and you thought it was expensive at $600?).
