Midway locks in Stranglehold date

Midway sets Xbox 360 and PC editions of John Woo game to end of August; PS3 edition to follow three weeks later.

Two years and three Electronic Entertainment Expos ago, Midway announced Stranglehold, a pseudo-sequel to the 1992 action film Hard-Boiled made in cooperation with the film's director John Woo and star Chow Yun-Fat. Previously set to be on shelves by "fall or holiday" of 2006, Midway pushed the title back to the first quarter of 2007. Having missed that release window, Midway said it would have the game out by August.

The long wait appears to be nearing an end, as a Midway representative today nailed down exact release dates for GameSpot. The Xbox 360 and PC editions of Stranglehold will apparently keep to Midway's most recently stated timeframe, arriving August 27. However, the PlayStation 3 version of the game is now set for September 17.

The Xbox 360 and PS3 editions of Stranglehold will also have limited-edition packages selling for $10 more than the suggested $59.99 of the regular versions. For PS3 consumers, the extra dough buys a copy of Hard-Boiled included on the Blu-ray disc. The Xbox 360 premium package includes a behind-the-scenes documentary on the game, as well as looks at the concept art and sound design of the game.

Arghh... I just got a call from EB Games saying they are crediting me my PS3 Stranglehold BD Collector's Edition pre-order as they are no longer carrying it?!? Can someone confirm this? I knew it was delayed to Sept 17, 3 weeks after the 360 release but now an uncertain release date in 2007? Come on Midway! I really hope this is a technical issue and not some backdoor deal with Microsoft to boost console sales after the recent 360 price drop. It's a conspiracy I tell you And no, I'm not a PS3 fanboy. I could pick it up for the 360 as well (which I might do at this rate) but as far as CE's go, the PS3 is the better value w/ Hard Boiled included (which I also already own on DVD). Hmm... at this point, the PS3 version needs to have some more exclusive contents, better graphics, faster load, anything to justify the longer wait.

** EDIT ** Forgot to mention that I'm in Canada. Got some more info on this and it seem only the Collectors Edition packaged with Hard boiled is cancelled for Canada maybe due to Copyright/No French language inclusion on the Hard Boiled BD?! Who knows... LOL. What a pity! Way to get our hopes up. Guess the 360 version is looking better and better.

TheoleDominion1, I like what you said, but most of the time for me, it's because it's a good game. I don't buy the next hottest game just because, I only buy the good games that I like. I haven't bought a game for my 360 in about 3 months, and I still play my 360 every day, some games that I got within months of getting my 360, and it's rarely for achievements. Sometimes I say "I'm getting this achievement", but that's never why I simply play that game, otherwise I'd be bored out of my mind. And still, I usually get distracted and never get the achievement, ala Crackdown. Some games I say "I need to get these achievements", and then I just say f*** it, it's not worth it, then I end up returning the game in about a week. I believe people should enjoy the games they like, and that things like the next "big game" shouldn't make them stop playing the games they already have. Although when Halo 3 comes out, it won't leave my disc tray for at least a month. Then it'll be another part of my collection. 22 games and counting! Used to be more, but the others were old and I didn't play them, so that 2... 6 games I've bought..... I consistantly play 19 of them.

I know what you're saying-HK_, true once a game is 6mths. or older alot of people move to the newer titles, but I'm telling you when I check my friends list there is a good percentage of people still playing old games like GRAW, LOTOR: Battle for Middle Earth, Dead Rising, Final Fantasy Xi( which I hate..lol), Halo 2, Oblivion (which I still play on occasion). Most of these titles are over a year old. When I ask them why are they still a certain game the answers vary from wanting the achievements, didn't get a chance to beat the game, showing a friend whose never seen the game, checking out the new released content ( new maps, weapons, missions,etc...) or just flat out love the game and can't get enough of it. So I'm not saying that "download-able" content is the only reason people still play old games, but it does enhance the experience. By the way, great comment - FighterHayabusa I couldn't have said it better myself.

who gives a sh!t...all these people arguing about the fact that it comes with a movie....a well old movie at that...
anybody who is actually a fan, like people have said would've bought it in the bargain bucket by now...
"Oh it comes with Hard Boiled in HD, and oh look its got a shiny cover too! SOLD!"

Seriously, your the PR departments dream consumer...
"... if we tell them that John Woo licked every PS3 copy of the game, we can whack another £10, and we'll tell them that Chow Yun Fat p!ssed on every 360 copy and add another £10 on that, and they'll argue between themselves which one is better, lick or p!ss and whose d!ck is bigger, while......we reap all the benefits! YES! God bless the age of the foolish consumer"

    Posted Jul 29, 2007 12:13 am PT

I have been waiting for this game for quite some time. I think that for Hard Boiled on Blu-Ray, three weeks becomes manageable. I don't usually get SE but come on it's Hard Boiled. Of course that is getting a bit close to Halo 3. Those of us with both systems are going to be be poor this Fall.

    Posted Jul 28, 2007 10:07 pm PT

Games like the Matrix & Max Payne stole their ideas from John Woo movies in the first place. It's a bit pointless calling this game Max Payne 3 when John Woo had done this sort of thing in previous projects before those games were released.

Screw waiting for the PS3 version. I'm sick of this waiting for the same damn game. Rainbow Six: Vegas? All the extra time and the game wasn't as good as the 360 version visually.

  • HK-47-M4

    Posted Jul 28, 2007 8:44 pm PT

Really though I think the extra 360 GTA4 exclusive content is pointless, that content doesn't come out until 2008 and by then everyone is going to play something else: PS3 owners will be playing Little Big Planet, Xbox 360 owners will be playing Halo Wars.

  • FighterHayabusa

    Posted Jul 28, 2007 3:45 pm PT

    ChaosXeno,

I have no interest in Lair or Warhawk. I own 360 and PS3, so I have a wider choice -- it means I don't have to hang tooth & nail to hopes & hype for one system. If this game turns out to be good, I'll get it. The Heavenly Sword demo seemed promising, so I'm leaning towards getting it.

What you're saying ChaosXeno doesn't make sense, I own both systems, but I am a fan of action 3rd person shooters. I'm looking forward to those PS3 titles you mentioned but none are in the same genre as Stranglehold. I like VARIETY and the more the better. You really shouldn't be so narrow-minded. And by your remarks, you only own the PS3 which makes you biased, so your opinion is not even credible. Be a GAMER not a console FANBOY!

good point -HK-, sooner or later MS has to do something about the lack of space on the dvd format, for now they're using download-able content on the hard-drive ( what about those who own the core system?} to increase longevity in the games. But I believe it is easier for the consumer to put all on disc from the start. I own both systems so I'm not a fan-boy, but if something makes sense then use it, and I believe that more space on disc makes for a better longer lasting gaming experience if the developers are given the time to utilize it.

    Posted Jul 28, 2007 10:34 am PT

@nikefreak Of course Blu-Ray matters! It is not nesseccesary I agree but it does help developers! Didn't Gears of War seem kind of short? That's because they didn't have as much room available, whereas if it had been a PS3 exclusive it would have been much longer. And if developers don't care then why are some developers saying they don't have enough room on DVD? That's why the PS3 version of the Darkness has extra content.

I agree _diamond2d- it does seem like Jet-Li's game and I hope it isn't. I would prefer if the game was more like Path of Neo's game-play it had some camera issues but it's the best 3rd -person fighting system with hand-to-hand, hand-weapon, and gunplay I've played so far. But I haven't played this game yet so I'll reserve judgment.

Thats one thing that worries me too... Especially if they are worried enough to include a 15yr old (bargain bin) movie in with it, and likely dub it as "HD" when it is really just upscaled. Regardless, I hope the game lives up to what I have seen of it - it could be fun

I am in the same boat, only I am not sure about the Ps3 version looking better. So far multiplatform games have looked/played worse on the PS3 in just about every case. The PS3 limited version defintely "looks" like a better deal. I wonder if buying the limited edition PS3 version counts as a Blu-Ray movie sale? The main reason holding me back form the PS3 version is the damn PS3 controller.

BTW - Those making their decision based on an inclusion on the PS3 of Hardboiled are kinda silly, imho. 1. Who cares if its on a BluRay? It wont magically become HD, if anything they will simply up the res and call it HD, as it doesnt seem to have been produced in HD to begin with. 2. This is a movie from 1992, which can easily be purchased for less than the cost of the LE. 3. Why again would a bargain bin movie included with a LE sway a purchase?? That is like saying I am going to include this case for the Zune from dollar tree, buy now! :\
