Marvel showdown rages on 360, PS3

EA Chicago bringing original fighting franchise featuring superheroes and villains to next-gen consoles in 2008.

Despite diversifying its offerings over the years, the heart of Comic-Con International: San Diego remains comics and the superheroes (and villains) that define them. In honor of this year's Comic-Con (which wraps up this weekend), EA announced today it would be bringing an as-yet-unnamed original fighting game featuring the Marvel license to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2008.

No stranger to the fighting genre, Marvel's superheroes have been featured in several 2D and 3D fighting games, including the Marvel vs. Capcom series and EA's own Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects. Never ones to shy away from a dustup, EA's Chicago studio will develop Marvel's latest fighting game. EA Chicago's most recent credits include the hip-hop rhythmic brawler Def Jam: Icon and the sweat-glistened boxing sim Fight Night Round 3.

Details on the game were not specified, but EA Chicago's effervescent general manager and vice president Kudo Tsunoda did say that the game would feature "a great all-star lineup of Marvel Super Heroes and Super Villains with incredible powers that are authentic to the fiction, huge environments, and a living world that keeps the gameplay fresh; every battle will be unique, every battle will be like a first edition."

I agree with bionicfilmer, I haven't she-hulk in anything execpt for the comics. It will be interesting to see how she fares in a game.

I am really excited to learn more about this game. I hope they don't drop the ball on the character choices though.
I want to see The Thing, and She-Hulk

actually capcom would have to redraw every single sprite to fit in with the next gen consoles, that could take an impressive amount of time and money (look how long its taking for SSFIIT: HD remix) that after buying the license from marvel would be a great risk for such a project. Now i know some people may say that MvsC3 would rock, but with how bad the latest fighting games from capcom have sucked (fighting Jam lol!) i don't think they wanna take the risk.

I can see the game being extremely flashy like Def Jam Icon with crap blowing up and characters sent flying, but I doubt the fighting will be exciting at all. I just can't see EA Chicago being able to create any Marvel charm in the Marvel universe.

I'm expecting to see some fast paced action, especially from some of Marvel's agile characters. Though, knowing EA, I doubt that will happen.

I hope they don't mess this one up like they did Marvel Rise of the imperfects. LOL!! That game was JUNK! The title alone tells you to stay away from it.

Sounds like a form of City of Heroes but without the MMO crap. Could be good, but could be lame. Maybe something like a Dragonball game where you can knock dudes through buildings and projectile attacks from long range. I'd like to see a multiplayer 4-16 player online game in a city area with a choice of dozens of Marvel characters. If multiple people choose a character they can be different iterations from over the years.

Why is this article listed under the Twisted Metal game? This has nothing to do with Twisted Metal. Here I was hoping to find some new information on some sequel to Twisted Metal Black or something similar and all I get are comic book heroes. Where is my new Twisted Metal Game???

I can call this one right off the bat. Just imagine Def Jam Icon with superheroes. I'm almost certain they'll use the same game engine for it.

marvel vs. capcom 3 has been out in japan for 4 years now it just have not made it to america yet for some strange legal reason ( red tape b.s.)
and if EA going to make this new game Im sure it'll suck they cant make a decent need for speed game so you know how this new marvel game going to be. they need to past it back to capcom or to konami

lol, i suppose that you've never heard of rise of the imperfects. complete crap. superhero games should only be made my activision and capcom. well, maybe that's a bit too far. but EA sure as hell shouldn't be allowed to be near anyone else in the spandex wearing crowd. they messed up batman, superman and a host of marvel characters with rise of the imperfects. where im from, three strikes is all you get...

They better do comic-book quality showdown build-ups, and HUGE arenas for fights, these arent guys from Tekken DOA or Virtua Fighter, heroes and villains alike need LOTS of space so attributes like speed, flight, and teleportation matter, the ones from "Imperfects" constrained them too much.

They better not squander this opportunity with a bad game. Superhero fighting games are some of the best out there. It would be real depressing if they made another bad one.

I wish they would make this a really good game. I mean, if they wanted to make it an AWESOME game, just walk into Comic-Con, stand in front of the Marvel booth, and point out 5 random people to do the games concept and characters. Wow.... that was one hard game to make, wasn't it? I know this would never happen and too many points of view would conflict with the game, but wouldn't you rather have a game made by the fans for the fans? Like the old Megaman games for the NES and SNES?

fight night was awesome, i'm looking for a super heroes fighting game better than the marvel vs capcom series.

  • Guannoboy

    Posted Jul 29, 2007 6:42 am PT

Fight Night is a great game, but unfortunately like all other EA games, the series hasn't shown much improvement since the first. I could see this being decent, but knowing its EA you know they will never release a great sequal.

Fight Night was an outstanding game with fluid controls. I didn't play Def Jam Icon, but I hope they can produce a solid product here.

All I know is that Marvel vs Capcom 2 will be tough to beat; that game was amazing.

There's always a big "if" with these projects. If they can pull it off, the only way for it to be successful is that format of the game is all -inconclusive with the range of powers, abilities, and co-op play features that mimic the actual comic book characters to the T.

Western Superheroes need to be done by Japanese developers if they want them to look and play well. There is something so lame with western animation that lacks the style and punch of something like MvC. It is so painful to see how garbage the Imperfects would be during the previews.

  • jvonrader

    Posted Jul 28, 2007 12:18 pm PT

Icon was a perfectly playable, competent game. FNR3 was great. Nemesis was crap, but this game is made by the team behind the two former. Icon was every bit as good as FFNY - neither were great, but they worked a hell of a lot better than Nemesis.

    I'll look forward to it.

    Posted Jul 28, 2007 12:11 pm PT

Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects was horrible for a 3D fighter but the EA Chicago team did a great job on Fight Night Round 3 which gives me hope for the new game. I still won't buy it until after the review because Nemesis was sooo bad.

    Posted Jul 28, 2007 11:55 am PT

Well, if they can't do Marvel vs Capcom 3 (another reason to hate exclusive licensing in video games), what about DC vs Capcom, Image vs Capcom or just "Any Video Game Comapny Thats Willing To Do It vs Capcom"? They could even do anime titles vs capcom. As long as the game is in the same vein as MvC series, i'll be there day one to purchase.
