Scourge Project goes Unreal

Tragnarion Studios signs to Epic's middleware game engine for newly announced team-based first-person shooter.

While a recently filed lawsuit suggests not everyone is happy with Unreal Engine 3, game developers have been flocking to Epic Games' middleware solution in droves. Since debuting in 2006, Unreal Engine 3 has been picked up by a number of big-name developers from both the Eastern and Western game markets, including Sony, Capcom, and Midway.

In addition to support from major studios, Epic's middleware solution has also been picked up by several smaller developers. The latest studio to take advantage of Unreal Engine 3's game-making tools is Malorca, Spain-based Tragnarion Studios.

With the engine, Tragnarion announced today it has started development on The Scourge Project, a story-driven first-person shooter that emphasizes team-based gameplay. The Scourge Project will support up to four-player action, and according to Tragnarion, each player will "experience a personal story, whilst playing together as a squad."

The Scourge Project is slated to ship for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in 2008.

Finally they are making the coop oriented games , thats the only way to get me to multiplayer , because i dont like the idea of getting kills as easy as its to get killed.

For a development team to make their own engine usually takes many months and alot of money to produce. So you can see why many developers go with middleware Engines like Unreal. To say that the development team lacks skill or commitment is ignorant. That just means the developers would much rather spend their time and money making the game the best it can be and not have to worry about their own custom engine which probably won't offer up the performance and graphical advancements a engine like Unreal Would give them.

It took Epic more than a year to develop the new Unreal Engine. SO if the developers took a similar route and made their same engine their game would take twice a long to produce and almost double their developmental cost... of course they could use the same engine on future games so that would bring down cost some since they would have a inhouse engine and not have to worry about licensing. Either way every developers uses middleware software some where in their games

    adam_the_nerd:

You do realise that A) The majority of middleware is highly customisable, in fact, it one of most middlewares top selling points

    B) People have been using unreal/other engines for years and we havn't seen many good games with them.

If a developer builds there own engine, it gives me much more confidence about their upcoming game. I mean just look at Starbreeze studio, sure they havnt made many games, but they have made two real gems. Chronicles of Riddick:Escape From Butcher Bay and The Darkness.

When someone licenses en engine, it tells me they have money rather than commitment. Not to say that good games are not made on these engines, but to say that the old "Middleware enable developers to concentrate on story ad gameplay" theory is getting quite stale, as people keep disproving it with their rubbish games.

The new unreal engine is beign used alot which is good for 2 reasons. Unreal engines are ALWAYS highly modifiable. 1) You can adapt them to just about any kind of game. 2) By using an already made engine, game developers can focus more on better gameplay, better stories and better quality rather then just graphics

"will support up to four-player action"...I should expect that to mean 4-player co-op (for the Xbox 360 at least). That'd be a move in the right direction. Co-op rocks!! Looking forward to an Army of 2!!

Hellgate london is not an RPG, it's an action/adventure.

Fallout 3 will not be an RPG, not if bethesda has anything to do with it...

Looking forward to Mass Effect though, even if it's more action/adventure than RPG.

RPG's like Mass effect and Hellgate are pretty cool but I still would like an increase in games like Lost odyssey and Naruto rise of a ninja because I am a JRPG fan. I wouldn't mind some good western RPG's but I want them good, free roaming and lots of secrets. Anyway the game sounds okay but not enough screens and gameplay footage for my final conclusion.

to temmehkan: To find the news of the 130% rise just go on the PS3 section and on the right is a lit of five news articles, click on the 'all the latest news' link and you'll get more which will have it in. It has been downplayed by 360 fans like me already anyway because it was too easy, a price cut obviously brings extra sales which just proves they were charging too much for it anyway and the sales will only last while they have the only model consumers are truly interested in before they release the 80gb no emotion engine SKU.

taylormadederek makes a great point and one that i've been on about since the SNES / Genesis days: Console fanboys are idiots.

Games are why this industry exists NOT consoles. Remember that.

It's NOT a chicken and the egg question. It's NOT Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo who keep this industry thriving but the programmers, designers and art and animation people who actually make the games.

Once a gamer always a gamer and that does not describe the fact that you own a console. It describes the fact that you will probably end up playing a video game on every device capable of it available to you. Think about it: cell phones, computers, consoles, calculators, air planes, hotel tv's, handheld computers (palm and such), handhelds (Gameboy / little Tetris / backgammon handhelds)... the list goes on.

I urge people to stop this incessant bickering about consoles. It only leads the industry giants to create unnecessary things like "exclusives." I own a Ps3 / Wii and my 2 roommates own XBOX 360's and a Wii. We all share consoles so among us there is absolutely no lack for gaming. This is not a plea I am making for myself, for I am a consumer whore and will continue to buy all of the latest consoles (I also have a DS and a PSP) if someone I'm living with doesn't first. No, I am making this plea for the general gaming public to stop the bickering for the greater good; gaming.

On the other hand though, since the cynical side of me knows that this little civil war of ours will never end, I'm glad I'll be working in the game industry Because when console makers want exclusives, they pay for them, and when they pay for them, my employer will get more money and in turn (hopefully) so will I. So bicker away children, so that I may feed mine

  • Stilwell28

    Posted Jul 25, 2007 5:42 am PT

Not saying much. sure they went up 130% but the Xbox 360 and the wii still beat it sales must have been pretty low for it to jump that high up.

  • taylormadederek

    Posted Jul 25, 2007 5:03 am PT

Why are not only you (Temmehkan) but so many other people all about a console. Really what interest do you have if it comes in first, maybe you are a shareholder but I doubt it. All three are obviously here to stay. Sure 130% is great, but isn't that only week over week. Not only that but 130% above what they were at still isn't that great in comparison to some of the others. So what I really don't understand is why you don't care as much about games as consoles. You play games you asses! Sure you play them on consoles but the games are what is important. So before you take your favorite over-weight (I'm sure like many of you) paperweight and brag about it to no end, think about what game you will be playing later.

Licensing the Unreal engine 3 costs between 250k and 5mil, depending on how much support/functionality you want, and who you know. Standard licensing (used to be, im not up to date) for it, is $3mil.

As for this game, not ANOTHER FPS that emphasizes team based gameplay.... Seriously... I mean... I WANT RPGs!!!!!

As for the SK comments about other devs having no problems, remember a couple things.

Capcom/Ubisoft/etc are much bigger companies with much more weight to throw around, so will not be mistreated. But also, a lot of compaies have been jumping on the bandwagon only just lately, meaning they have a more complete engine to work with.

SK however, licensed the engine quite early on, and received an incomplete, buggy engine, which epic then 'forgot' or 'neglected' to support. Leaving companies like Ubisoft etc to simply divert more programmers to making a stable engine, leaving smaller companies like SK to rot.
